Book Synopsis Researching AIDS, Sexuality and Gender by : Nyokabi Kamau
Download or read book Researching AIDS, Sexuality and Gender written by Nyokabi Kamau and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current HIV and AIDS regime has opened up unknown vistas in intellectual pursuits and knowledge creation. One such newly opened up area of research is studying HIV and AIDS in relation to gender issues. However, owing to the devastating nature of the epidemic, most studies tend to focus on women merely as an "at risk" population leaving aside the wider sociological dimensions that pertain to women's sexuality in general, issues of AIDS related stigma and discrimination and how it impacts on women's careers as economic contributors to society. The uniqueness of the present study lies in the fact that it embodies the author's triangulated research into the tripartite dimensions of HIV and AIDS, women's sexuality, and gender-sociology, all against the backdrop of analysing actual experiences of career women in Kenyan universities.

Book Synopsis Diet of Worms by : Cheptepkeny Korir
Download or read book Diet of Worms written by Cheptepkeny Korir and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prison-reformation has been a controversial and politically charged issue in Kenya. In the past it has elicited such legendary and emotional responses as What reforms? Prisons are not supposed to be five star hotels! Recently, however, there has been a greater consensus between the public sector and the civic society in Kenya - than has ever in the past - of the need to revisit the human rights of inmates in various Kenyan prisons. Since 2003 a number of ground breaking reforms have been introduced in Kenyan prisons and more reforms seem to be on the way. Jacqueline Korir in this book takes a serious and despassionate look into a single variable: the quality of catering in Kenyan prisons. Her findings were both shocking and challenging. The food was lacking in both nutritive value as well aesthetic appeal. The site of food samples was only reminiscent of a grotesque meaning of the famous Council in Church History - The Diet of Worms! This book, grounded, in empirical data analysis by hard statistics and backed by rare photographs from inside Kenyan prisons serves as an eye-opener to both the prison-reformists as well as students and teachers of African sociology and institutional catering all over the world.
Book Synopsis Mapping Eastleigh for Christian-Muslim Relations by : C. B. Peter
Download or read book Mapping Eastleigh for Christian-Muslim Relations written by C. B. Peter and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can Christian-Muslim relations be better understood and even interfaith conflicts resolved if Christians and Muslims joined together in an existential and phenomenological engagement with common spatiality? To answer this question, 12 Christian students from St. Paul's University, Limuru, Kenya and 12 Muslim students from Eastleigh, Nairobi mapped the 12 streets of Eastleigh, a sprawling Nairobi suburb largely populated by Somali Muslims. The mapping method in the above exercise was phenomenological, that is, mapping spatiality as a 'lived experience' and interpreting spatial observations in light of individual and group existential experiences. The result of the mapping exercise was a radical transformation both in the Mappers' own self-perceptions as well as their perceptions of Christian- Muslim relations. The seven chapters in this unique book look at the above finding from different perspectives, both Christian and Muslim.

Book Synopsis Making Connections by : Marilyn Naidoo
Download or read book Making Connections written by Marilyn Naidoo and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the disconnect within the curriculum and the lack of contextual relevance, African theological education is still searching for appropriate approaches to ministerial training. Integrative theological education refers to systematic attempts to connect major learning experiences appropriate to the education and formation of ministers. It is seen as a solution to connect and transform ministry training. The main premise of this book is that the key to enhancing theological education is the intentional integration of knowing with being and doing, of theory with practice, and of theology with life and ministry. In this way, all aspects of student learning are brought together holistically, highlighting an educational strategy that is concerned with connections in human experience, thereby supporting student learning. Making Connections offers the opportunity to consider integration as an appropriate pedagogical approach, to create the correct balance in making education more meaningful and fulfilling for the African, revealing humanising education grounded in African philosophy and worldview.
Download or read book Dying Voice written by K. Tanui and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2006-12-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of cattle-raids carried out by various nomadic communities on their counterparts is a subject of interest, intrigue and misinterpretation. What was the original purpose of cattle-raids in the concerned nomadic communities? How exactly were the raids carried out? What were the norms and taboos governing cattle-raids and wars in the traditional tribal folklore? Is cattle-raising compatible with modern society? Is it acceptable for perpetrators of modern cattle-raiding to hide behind "tradition" and justify their criminal activities. The above are some of the questions that inspired this author of this book to undertake 11 years of research which is presented here in the form of a novel.
