Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maxim Gorky said that no one understood -- the tragedy of life's trivialities -- as clearly as Anton Chekhov, widely considered the father of the modern short story and the modern play. Chekhov's singular ability to speak volumes with a single, impeccably chosen word, mesh comedy and pathos, and capture life's basic sadness as he entertains us, are why so many aspire to emulate him. How to Write Like Chekhov meticulously cherry-picks from Chekhov's plays, stories, and letters to his publisher, brother, and friends, offering suggestions and observations on subjects including plot and characters (and their names), descriptions and dialogue, and what to emphasize and avoid. Book Synopsis Sweet Honey, Bitter Lemons by : Matthew Fort
Download or read book Sweet Honey, Bitter Lemons written by Matthew Fort and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Replete with authentic Siclian recipes culled directly from the out of the way island stoves and cafe kitchens that cook them, Sweet Honey, Bitter Lemons presents a travelogue for seasoned travelers, and lovers of all things Italian. At the age of twenty-six Matthew Fort first visited the island of Sicily. He and his brother arrived in 1973 expecting sun, sea and good food, but they were totally unprepared for the lifelong effect of this most extraordinary place. Thirty years later and a bit wiser—but no less hungry—Matthew finally returns. Travelling around the island on his scooter, Monica, he samples exquisite antipasti in rundown villages and delicate pastries in towns tumbling down vertical hillsides, and goes fishing for anchovies underneath a sky scattered with stars. Once again this enigmatic island casts its spell as Matthew rediscovers its beauty, the intensity of its flavors, and finds himself digging into the darkness of Sicily's past as well as some mysteries of his own.

Book Synopsis Browsing through the Sultan’s Bookshelves by : Kristof D’hulster
Download or read book Browsing through the Sultan’s Bookshelves written by Kristof D’hulster and published by Bonn University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from 135 manuscripts that were once part of the library of the late Mamluk sultan Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī (r. 1501–1516), this book challenges the dominant narrative of a "post-court era", in which courts were increasingly marginalized in the field of adab. Rather than being the literary barren field that much of the Arabic and Arabic-centred sources, produced extra muros, would have us believe, it re-cognizes Qāniṣawh’s court as a rich and vibrant literary site and a cosmopolitan hub in a burgeoning Turkic literary ecumene. It also re-centres the ruler himself within this court. No longer the passive object of panegyric or the source of patronage alone, Qāniṣawh has an authorial voice in his own right, one that is idiosyncratic yet in conversation with other voices. As such, while this book is first and foremost a book about books, it is one that consciously aspires to be more than that: a book about a library, and, ultimately, a book about the man behind the library, Qāniṣawh al-Ghawrī.

Book Synopsis Südtirol and Dolomites by : Enrico Massetti
Download or read book Südtirol and Dolomites written by Enrico Massetti and published by Massetti Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alto Adige – Südtirol is a German-speaking province, where food is more similar to Austrian food than to Italian. Smoked speck is a specialty here. And… don't forget the mountains, both in winter and in summer time there is always something to do. In Bolzano – Bozen in German, a city where Italian and German cultures seamlessly blend, between the many architectural sites we recommend beginning from a "lesser" work, yet one which have a great symbolic interest: the Porta del Vino (the “Wine Gate”) inside Bolzano’s gothic Cathedral, artistically engraved with images of peasants at the work between the vines. Homage to wine, which here is produced with excellent results – just one more reason for this region's appeal. Not to be missed is the Dominican Church, with its 14th-century fresco on the "Triumph of Death" in clear Giotto style. Finally, Merano is a pretty and highly popular tourist center with ancient porticoes and a suggestive historical center. This is a guide to the Italian mountain province of Südtirol. It describes its provincial capital city of Bolzano with its surroundings of San Genesio, Sarentino Valley, Ritten, Rosengarten, Carezza Lake, and Steinegg, as well as the Pusteria and Venosta valleys, including Merano and its surroundings of Senales Valley, Passeir Valley, Naturns, Lagundo, Schwemmalm, Vigiljoch, Ulten Valley and Naturns. It also includes the Seiseralm - Alpe di Siusi, with Kestelruth, Fie allo Scillar, and the Alta Badia Valley, as well as the Val Gardena with Santa Cristina, Selva, and Ortisei. The guide includes extensive descriptions and photos of the localities covered. The guide includes a section on Südtirol food and recipes.

Book Synopsis Conceptual Art by : Alexander Alberro
Download or read book Conceptual Art written by Alexander Alberro and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-08-25 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark anthology collects for the first time the key historical documents that helped give definition and purpose to the conceptual art movement. Compared to other avant-garde movements that emerged in the 1960s, conceptual art has received relatively little serious attention by art historians and critics of the past twenty-five years—in part because of the difficult, intellectual nature of the art. This lack of attention is particularly striking given the tremendous influence of conceptual art on the art of the last fifteen years, on critical discussion surrounding postmodernism, and on the use of theory by artists, curators, critics, and historians. This landmark anthology collects for the first time the key historical documents that helped give definition and purpose to the movement. It also contains more recent memoirs by participants, as well as critical histories of the period by some of today's leading artists and art historians. Many of the essays and artists' statements have been translated into English specifically for this volume. A good portion of the exchange between artists, critics, and theorists took place in difficult-to-find limited-edition catalogs, small journals, and private correspondence. These influential documents are gathered here for the first time, along with a number of previously unpublished essays and interviews. Contributors Alexander Alberro, Art & Language, Terry Atkinson, Michael Baldwin, Robert Barry, Gregory Battcock, Mel Bochner, Sigmund Bode, Georges Boudaille, Marcel Broodthaers, Benjamin Buchloh, Daniel Buren, Victor Burgin, Ian Burn, Jack Burnham, Luis Camnitzer, John Chandler, Sarah Charlesworth, Michel Claura, Jean Clay, Michael Corris, Eduardo Costa, Thomas Crow, Hanne Darboven, Raúl Escari, Piero Gilardi, Dan Graham, Maria Teresa Gramuglio, Hans Haacke, Charles Harrison, Roberto Jacoby, Mary Kelly, Joseph Kosuth, Max Kozloff, Christine Kozlov, Sol LeWitt, Lucy Lippard, Lee Lozano, Kynaston McShine, Cildo Meireles, Catherine Millet, Olivier Mosset, John Murphy, Hélio Oiticica, Michel Parmentier, Adrian Piper, Yvonne Rainer, Mari Carmen Ramirez, Nicolas Rosa, Harold Rosenberg, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, Jeanne Siegel, Seth Siegelaub, Terry Smith, Robert Smithson, Athena Tacha Spear, Blake Stimson, Niele Toroni, Mierle Ukeles, Jeff Wall, Rolf Wedewer, Ian Wilson
