Book excerpt: Peter Schulenburg takes whimsy, adds a healthy dose of charm, stirs in a child's view and spices the recipe with easily acquired rhythm and rhyme. The result? Each poem brings on a cheery case of the giggles. What better way to introduce children to poetry? Perhaps they will love it- most surely they will. Illustrations by Dave Quandt and Kurt Schulenburg capture the eye and the heart. These wonderful drawings spark the power of imagination which has already been activated by each verse. They lead the mind to a higher plane of thought, highlighting the already bold combination of humor and language so expertly blended into each poem. Smile as you open this book to savor the delicacies contained herein. Bring your inner child to life and makes friends with your own children in a rare and delightful way. Read these poems aloud together. Look around your own house and find the silliness that resides there. Encourage your children to write about and draw what they see. Join Peter Schulenburg in his observation of life through a child's eye view, and who knows? You may discover a poet in yourself, too.

Book excerpt: The award-winning poet Peter Schulenburg's newest book, I AM A PIE RAT contains the same whimsy and charm as his previous two books. I AM A PIE RAT is great reading for any family who likes to giggle and laugh out loud. The giggles and laughs that had Reader's Views saying, "Not only are they (the poems) so much fun to read and laugh at, but . . . the illustrations added to the fun and laughter." I AM A PIE RAT contains poems that will make you snicker and laugh about brothers and sisters, your mom and your dad and one stormy king who is rather bad. With poems about spaceships and keys in your car and sighting sea donkeys which is quite bizarre. Dave Quandt's and Jessica Berger's illustrations litter the book with more giggles and grins to put the finishing touches on the humorous people and situations you'll find in Peter Schulenburg's poems. So, join Peter Schulenburg as he prances down the road of silliness with his friends straight into the heart of Laughter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My unstructured upbringing, and cares to the wind attitude, led to my frequent incarceration, from childhood to adulthood, it's a disturbing story, which is primarily aimed at the adult reading audience, who enjoy reading about reality situations and crime. I have always been a reader, and to a large extent, that helped me become a self taught person. Born on the banks of the Colorado River in Arizona, and raised up in the Marcos De Niza barrio projects in South Phoenix, I experienced the injustices of the cotton fields, Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Home, and Arizona State Industrial School at Fort Grant, Arizona. I wandered the desperate streets of Los Angeles, and the forlorn railroad tracks, alone, like a lost person without a purpose in life. I was locked up in the jails of Phoenix, and Los Angeles, before winding up in the California State penitentiary system. Upon my release, I struggled to stay out of the pen, and took the jobs that society at large would never want to take. Through numerous personal tragedies, incarcerations, and unfortunate circumstances, I lost control of my life. No one was ever able to change my destructive behavior. The changes when they occurred came from within me, when I could no longer cope, with the situations I had cast my self into. Looking back, I can now see what I couldn't see, during those hopeless time periods. I was very fortunate, to finally be able to leave that life behind me, through relationships that believed in me, and successfully worked, and built myself a civil service work career, from which I retired. I now spend my days enjoying life's simple pleasures, after all my previous tragic missteps. My objective in life now, is to become an accomplished writer.

It may be responsible for a greater improvement in human diet and longevity than any other technology of the last two thousand years-but have you ever thought seriously about your refrigerator? That box humming in the background displays more than you might expect, even who you are and the society in which you live. Jonathan Rees examines the past, present, and future of the household refrigerator with the aim of preventing its users from ever taking it for granted again. No mere container for cold Cokes and celery stalks, the refrigerator acts as a mirror-and what it reflects is chilling indeed. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.
