This book offers insights into the ways in which six principals go about leading the change process in their schools, and looks for ways of understanding why and how principals behave and think in the way they do. Its edited topical life history approach identifies key events, experiences and significant others in the lives of the case study managers, and shows how these have shaped the way they implement changes to curriculum, teaching and learning in their schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Published in cooperation with The Center on Innovation & Improvement) As suggested by the title, the purpose of this Handbook on Restructuring and Substantial School Improvement is to provide principles for restructuring and substantially improving schools. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the Center on Innovation & Improvement (CII) engaged leading experts on restructuring and school improvement to prepare modules for this handbook to assist states, districts, and schools in establishing policies, procedures, and support to successfully restructure schools. The Handbook is organized into three sections. The topic of the Handbook’s modules – restructuring with a focus on the district as the impetus for dramatic improvement – is relatively new in the nation’s education history. For this reason, the module authors were selected because they are highly experienced experts in their fields and can be counted on to judiciously weigh the less than definitive evidence and to state useful guiding principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following substantial changes throughout the Australian education system, primary schools are no longer in the protected position of having a regulated flow of clients, a pre-determined curriculum and marginal levels of staff development. Recent moves have brought new or increased responsibilities for all schools in areas such as: *curriculum and policy development *staff development *monitoring and assessment *the use of new technologies *resource allocation This book seeks to review the impact of this change on Australian primary schools, on the people who are involved with them and the issues they face. Primary education is being re-structured throughout the world, and therefore these issues are of great interest and relevance to educators worldwide.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to investigate the role of the building principal in the implementation of fundamental school restructuring associated with the creation of essential schools. The principal's role in this process was examined strictly from the perspective of building principals who were directly involved in the process. To obtain this unique and little sought view, the researcher conducted in depth telephone survey interviews with a select group of school administrators designated as Thomson Fellows. Recognized by the Coalition of Essential Schools as exemplary essential school administrators, the Thomson Fellows provided insight into the leadership roles that principals assumed to function successfully in essential schools. From the perspective of the Thomson Fellows who participated in this study, the principal's role in the successful implementation of essential school restructuring was conceptualized as being that of facilitator, resource provider and coach of staff involved in the process. To arrive at this conceptualization, the principal's role was examined with respect to: (a) the change process; (b) school governance and decision making; (c) essential school restructuring; and (d) perceived changes in role definition resulting from essential school restructuring. One of the strongest conclusions that can be drawn from this study is that an essential school principal's primary role is that of facilitator of school change. A second major conclusion evoked by this study is that principals involved in essential school restructuring enjoy greater instructional leadership roles as school administrators as a result of their involvement in the process. Additionally, principals' collegial relationships with teachers were seen to be enhanced as a result of essential school restructuring. Recommendations for further research on this topic include replication of this study with successive groups of Thomson Fellows to obtain a more complete view of the role of successful essential school principals in the restructuring process. Additional investigations of this type would provide information on a topic about which the literature on essential school restructuring has little to say from a perspective that is unique. Another recommendation for research is that the the principal's role be examined from the perspective of other key players in the restructuring process such as classroom teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a key text for any student embarking on a qualitative research project, it provides worked examples and valuable models which can be used as guides for plans and proposals, answering key questions and providing a comprehensive guide to a student’s project. It shows that when planning a qualitative research proposal, researchers should adopt an approach where they ask themselves the following four questions: What research paradigm informs my approach to my research area? What theoretical perspective do I choose within the paradigm? What methodology do I choose? What methods are most appropriate? Including examples of the write-up of two central types of research projects: studies on participants’ ‘perspectives’ on phenomena and studies on how participants manage or ‘cope with’ phenomena, the book outlines five research proposals to illustrate ways in which these two central ‘types’ can be varied and applied when engaging in five other types of studies, namely, policy studies, life history studies, retrospective interactionist longitudinal studies and interactionist historical studies, and ‘problem-focused’ studies.
