Book excerpt: The availability of adequate, efficient, and affordable infrastructural facilities - both economic and social - constitutes the core of development strategy and efforts. In the absence of infrastructure services, enterprises are forced to seek higher-cost alternatives which impact profits and production levels adversely. In India, the demand for infrastructural services has increased rapidly since industrial liberalization of the economy. Unfortunately, infrastructural bottlenecks remain the biggest stumbling block of industrial progress in the country. By their very nature, infrastructure projects involve huge initial investments, long gestation periods, and high risk. This book examines the problems and inadequacies of various sectors of economic and social infrastructure in India. Changes in infrastructure policy and new institutional arrangements for infrastructure development are also discussed.

Book Synopsis Assessing the Infrastructure Performance of Indian States by : Ramakrishna Nallathiga
Download or read book Assessing the Infrastructure Performance of Indian States written by Ramakrishna Nallathiga and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure provides the necessary services that support economic growth by increasing the productivity of labours and capital, thereby reducing the costs of production and raising profitability, production, income and employment. Extensive and efficient infrastructure is critical for ensuring the effective functioning of any economy. However, the development of infrastructure and its growth may depend upon the peculiar priorities and performance of the State governments in a federal structure of government such as that of India. Some states have grown very fast while some have been sluggish in their infrastructure development, due to various reasons. In this context this study made an attempt to assess the performance of Indian States on infrastructure using the framework of inter-State analysis. The infrastructure performance of these States has been analysed using infrastructure density data i.e., service capacity created per unit service area or population and the growth performance through 'quadrant analysis'. The assessment of Infrastructure performance of States has been done with reference to each infrastructure categories through the ranking of States in terms of levels over two time periods and growth. The States that have performed on both counts have further been categorised into top and bottom performers. The overall assessment of infrastructure density performance of States has been done subsequently by aggregating sector ranks and then categorising into top and bottom overall performers. These scores are also normalised within and across sectors to get indexed performance.
Book Synopsis The Contributions of Infrastructure to Economic Development by : Christine Kessides
Download or read book The Contributions of Infrastructure to Economic Development written by Christine Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the linkages between infrastructure and economic development based on both formal empirical research and informal case studies. The main thesis is that economic benefits result from investments in infrastructure only to the extent that they generate a sustainable flow of services valued by consumers. Thus, an analysis of infrastructures' contributions to growth must look at the impacts of services as actually perceived, not at indirect indicators that measure only aggregate provision of infrastructure capital. The paper notes that macro and industry level research , although having its limitations, suggest a positive and statistically significant relationship between infrastructure and economic output. However the conclusions derived from this research (most of which derives from developed countries) provide little specific guidance for policy. To gain more practical insights about how infrastructure contributes to economic growth and to improved quality of life, and to understand the welfare costs of inadequate or unreliable infrastructure, it is necessary to look at microeconomic evidence. Particularly interesting illustrations of these relationships are to be found in developing countries where there is wide variance in the availability and quality of infrastructure.

Section II consists of discussions on the causes of widespread poverty persisting in South Asia, development dividend associated with peace in South Asia, issues of well-being and human development, implications for endogenous growth through human capital accumulation on environmental quality and taxation, the rationale for a labour supply schedule for the poor, switching as an investment strategy, the role of government and strategic interaction in the presence of information asymmetry, government’s role in controlling food inflation, inter-state variations in levels and growth of industry in India, structural breaks in India’s service sector development, and the phenomenon of wasted votes in India’s parliamentary elections. Section III deals with the effectiveness of monetary policy in tackling economic crisis, the effective demand model of corporate leverages and recession, the empirical link between stock market development and economic growth in cross-country experience in Asia, an empirical verification of the Mckinnon-Shaw hypothesis for financial development in India, the dynamics of the behaviour of the Indian stock market, efficiency of non-life insurance companies, econometric study of the causal linkage between FDI and current account balance in India and the implications of contagious crises for the Indian economy.
Book Synopsis Sectoral Systems of Innovation and Production in Developing Countries by : Franco Malerba
Download or read book Sectoral Systems of Innovation and Production in Developing Countries written by Franco Malerba and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade there has been a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of research focused on the processes through which technological capabilities are acquired by countries significantly behind the economic frontier, and the institutions that effectively support the catching up process. This book is a splendid contribution to this literature. The concept of a sectoral innovation system is well suited for framing studies of these kinds of questions, and serves well to unify the many interesting empirical studies in the book. Some of those studies are success stories, others of less successful cases. Readers new to this body of research will find this book a great introduction. All readers will learn a lot from it about what is required for and involved in economic development. Richard R. Nelson, Columbia Earth Institute, US and University of Manchester, UK This book examines in detail the features and dynamics of sectoral systems of innovation and production in developing countries. Processes of rapid growth are usually associated with specific sectors such as automobiles, electronics or software, as well as with the transformation of traditional sectors such as agriculture and food. The book shows, however, that the variations across all these sectors in terms of structure and dynamics is so great that a full understanding of these differences is necessary if innovation is to be encouraged and growth sustained. The expert contributors promote this understanding by drawing upon empirical evidence from a wide range of sectoral systems, from traditional to high technology, and across a number of countries. They explore how these systems change and evolve, highlighting policy lessons to be drawn from the analysis. Case studies include the Brazilian aeronautical, pulp and paper industries, the Korean machine tool sector, motorbike manufacture in Thailand and Vietnam, pharmaceuticals and telecommunication equipment in India, ICT in Taiwan, the biofuels sector in Tanzania, salmon farming in Chile and software in Uruguay. Scholars and researchers in the fields of economics development economics in particular and innovation will find this book to be of great interest. Policymakers and managers focussing on innovation and growth in developing countries will also warmly welcome the book.
Book Synopsis Infrastructure Investments in Developing Economies by : Giang Dang
Download or read book Infrastructure Investments in Developing Economies written by Giang Dang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-18 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide knowledge on how infrastructure is planned and built in a typical developing country, and what key variables are there in the system limiting the efficient use of public investments in infrastructure. The book begins with a comprehensive literature review on construction and economic development, and trade and economic development. The focus of the book is on the case of Vietnam, with lessons drawn for other developing economies. The book employs the mixed use of data to provide a stronger basis for analysis and interpretation of related government policies. Based on the research findings, the book recommends significant capacity building work for Vietnam to develop capacities that would remove constraints on the efficient use of public investments in infrastructure. The general principles of significant capacity building work which are useful for policy implications are introduced in the book. Analysts, academics, public and private communities in developing countries can adopt the research findings as guiding principles to bring about changes in their current use of public investments in infrastructure, thus supporting their trade and economic growth in the long term.
