Carrilho et al. present the first results of GEOALGAR, a project initiated in 2000 to monitor the seismic activity in the Algarve region (southern Portugal). In this paper results of the relocation of epicenters and determination of fault plane solutions are presented. The new epicentral locations show a more organized spatial distribution which could indicate a possible correlation with some known tectonic features. Fault plane solutions are predominantly of strike-slip motion consistent with a horizontal compression in the NW-SE to NNW-SSE direction. The paper by Yelles-Chaouche et al. presents a detailed study of the 22 December, 1999 earthquake at Ain Temouchent (northwest Algeria) of magnitude 5. 7. The earthquake caused serious damage in the town of Ain Teemouchent with 25 casualties and 25000 people left homeless. Intensity map, surface features and the focal mechanism, based on wave form analysis, are shown. The mechanism corresponds to reverse fault motion with planes striking NNE-SSW resulting from horizontal compression in the NW-SE direction. This corresponds to the general mechanism found for Algeria earthquakes. Buforn et al. present a study of the characteristics of the plate boundary between Africa and Iberia, from west of Cape San Vicente to Algeria, using seismicity and source mechanism data. The region is divided into three areas which manifest different characteristics.

Book excerpt: Tectonic motion of the Adria microplate exerts a first-order control on the tectonics, geology, seismology, resource distribution, and the geological hazards across a broad zone of south-central Europe and the north-central Mediterranean. Since its first application to geodynamical problems, GPS geodesy has gradually revealed the nature of motion and deformation for most active areas of deformation across the Earth. One of the last remaining regional-scale problems on the planet is the motion and associated deformation in the peri-Adriatic region. Selected local-scale studies have examined aspects of this motion, but to date no truly regional analysis or regional team has systematically attacked the full breadth of this problem. A NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was held in Veszprém, Hungary from April 4-7, 2004. This workshop brought together a distinguished international group of scientists working in the peri-Adriatic region to: (1) review research activities and results, (2) share technical expertise, and (3) provide a springboard for future collaborative research on Adria geodynamics. Areas of agreement were identified, as well as remaining areas of debate. In addition, attention focused on important scientific questions and the potential for international and interdisciplinary research in the future.

Innovation and design need not be about the search for a killer app. Innovation and design can start in people's everyday activities. They can encompass local services, cultural production, arenas for public discourse, or technological platforms. The approach is participatory, collaborative, and engaging, with users and consumers acting as producers and creators. It is concerned less with making new things than with making a socially sustainable future. This book describes experiments in innovation, design, and democracy, undertaken largely by grassroots organizations, non-governmental organizations, and multi-ethnic working-class neighborhoods. These stories challenge the dominant perception of what constitutes successful innovations. They recount efforts at social innovation, opening the production process, challenging the creative class, and expanding the public sphere. The wide range of cases considered include a collective of immigrant women who perform collaborative services, the development of an open-hardware movement, grassroots journalism, and hip-hop performances on city buses. Book excerpt: “Transformation design” is looking for new ways to change our behavior and society through new forms of innovation. The existing user-oriented approach of design must therefore be extended to one that is society-oriented. The concept of transformation is based on the anthropologist Karl Paul Polanyi and his book The Great Transformation (1944), which described the emergence of the now almost undisputed and globally widespread western market logic: the transformation of societies with markets into market societies, which he calls “dislodgment of the markets”. Meanwhile, leading think tanks are referring to Polanyi. They are calling for a new social contract and the “re-embedding” of the market into society. What are the possible instruments and contributions of design for this new “Great Transformation”? The variety of the above questions, answers, theories, methods, ideas, and projects suggests that “transformation design” is not in fact a discipline in itself, but that it will lead to a fruitful discourse. The book attempts to form an initial position in terms of this ambitious and ethical design perspective. It also seeks to inspire the international debate to push for a project of responsible design.
