This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural development is crucial in developing countries, and particularly in the poorest countries where it accounts for large shares of employment and income and whose poverty is due simply to having a large share of the workforce in low-productivity agriculture. Raising productivity in agriculture is critically important for development, as is smoothly moving workers out of agriculture into more productive employment in other sectors. Raising agricultural productivity helps both to raise incomes and to reduce poverty-both by raising the incomes of poor people working in agriculture and by lowering the prices of foods that make up a disproportionately large share of the expenditures of poor people. In small and open economies, the in-crease in profitability of agriculture following improvements in productivity might tend to retain or even attract workers into agriculture. By contrast, at a global level, or at national level when policy focusses on self-sufficiency, improvements in agricultural productivity will free up labor for employment in other sectors. Incomes are generally much higher in non-agricultural work in developing countries-more than double those in agriculture after careful adjustment for key differences. This raises the possibility of a double dividend from structural transformation as workers move into higher-productivity activities. A key question for development policy is whether it is enough to simply evaluate the gains from higher productivity within agriculture, or whether potential benefits from structural change be included as well. This paper examines the arguments on this question. It concludes that these dividends may be substantial-but whether they are or not depends on the source of the initial differences in productivity and on the direction of movement when agricultural productivity rises. If it results from policy barriers such as restrictions on the transfer of farmland or requirements for residence permits in urban areas, there are likely to be substantial welfare gains when labor moves out of agriculture. They may also be substantial if urban wages are artificially high and attract substantial numbers of job-waiters into unemployment. However, these gains may be illusory if the income gaps arise primarily from differences in skills or from reluctance to move created by asset fixity.
Book Synopsis Rural Wage Employment in Developing Countries by : Carlos Oya
Download or read book Rural Wage Employment in Developing Countries written by Carlos Oya and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is still a serious global phenomenon, and remains concentrated in rural areas of developing countries. Much literature has been devoted to understanding the lives and prospects for small poor producers (smallholder farmers) and micro-entrepreneurs, but much less is known and written about those who lie at the bottom of the production chains as rural wage labourers. This book argues that the significance of those who totally or partially depend on rural wages for their survival is much greater than usually acknowledged, both in terms of their quantitative importance, but also, qualitatively for an understanding of rural poverty. The volume brings together field-based empirical evidence from across Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Themes explored include the heterogeneity of the rural population working for wages; the relationship between the expansion of rural wage employment and other processes of social change and development; and the social and economic barriers to entry in rural labour markets. These elements are discussed in light of their policy implications, and the book ends with a progressive policy agenda to reduce poverty among rural wage workers.

Spash, Environmental Values Economics of Ecological Resources presents new or recently published work on ecological economies, sustainability, poverty, resource degradation and decision-making under uncertainty. The book explores the allocation of resources in jointly determined ecological-economic systems. An introductory chapter examines the work of other major contributors to the field of ecological economics and introduces Professor Perrings's work and the material in this volume. The first of three parts is concerned with the dynamics of joint systems and with the implications for the control and conservation of ecological resources. The second part focuses on the conditioning effect of the economic environment on private decisions in low income resource-dependent economies. The final part considers the way that decision makers handle the uncertainty that is an integral feature of the evolution of the ecological-economic system.

Book Synopsis Rural Livelihoods by : Henry Bernstein
Download or read book Rural Livelihoods written by Henry Bernstein and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the question of how people in developing countries survive, and how their lives have been affected by the great changes since the Second World War. Throughout large parts of the developing world rural livelihoods are in crisis. Even in those parts of the third world where there has been growth of food output, that growth has rarely been translated into a commensurate expansion of livelihoods. Frequently, both economic stagnation and economic growth are translated into suffering for those who live in the countryside. Many people are aware that there is a crisis of livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa, but the understanding of that crisis rarely transcends simple conceptions of food or environmental crisis or the inadequacy of states: the ubiquity of crisis is rarely comprehended. This book addresses the pressing question of rural poverty. It examines the diverse human implications of rural change, the various crises of rural livelihoods which arise from change, and the survival strategies of individuals and households. It describes the great processes of agrarian transformation which have fundamentally altered rural livelihoods in developing countries and identifies some of the dilemmas for public action which arise from agrarian transformation and the crises of rural livelihoods. The contributors draw upon a range of disciplinary approaches to the subject, including anthropology, sociology, economics, political economy, agricultural science, and development studies.

Book Synopsis The Myth of Market Failure by : Peter Gregory
Download or read book The Myth of Market Failure written by Peter Gregory and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes sharp issue with the prevailing perception that Mexican employment conditions have not improved or have even deteriorated over time. It reveals a steady and substantial improvement in the earnings of workers at the bottom of the nonagricultural wage structure and shows that rural-urban migration has caused migrants' earnings to rise signinficantly and has not prevented the rise of urban unskilled wages in general. The findings indicate that estimates of the underutilization of labor are not only grossly exaggerated but also misleading for the formulation of employment policy. The author uses new information to estimate the flow of migrant labor to the United States. His examination of Mexican labor markets shows the unexpected importance of nonagricultural labor for rural household incomes. Finally, he assesses the impact on employment of the recent economic crisis and draws on lessons of the past to advance employment policy prescriptions for the future.
