Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats magnetic separation from the point of view of both the engineer in the field who operates magnetic separators and the research scientist in the laboratory. It emphasizes those aspects of magnetic separation where lack of support in fundamental research is most evident. The intention is to bring the engineer and the scientist closer together, to promote the application of basic physical phenomena in engineering practice, and to gain the acceptance of the industry. The book presents a fairly broad survey of magnetic separation as applied to and practised primarily by the mineral-processing industries, although its use in other industries is reviewed briefly. It includes information on the physical principles of magnetic separation, magnetic properties of minerals and their measurement, the generation of magnetic field, theoretical and practical problems of magnetic separation, and experience gained in the design and operation of magnetic-separation systems. In detail, the book consists of six chapters dealing with the following topics: The Physical Properties of Magnetic Separation, Review of Magnetic Separation Techniques, Theory of High-gradient Magnetic Separation, Practical Aspects of Magnetic Separation, Industrial Applications of High-gradient Magnetic Separation, and The Economics of Magnetic Separation. The six appendices deal with symbols, abbreviations, values of physical constants, conversions from one unit to another, definitions of derived units, and a list of selected equipment manufacturers. There is a comprehensive bibliography (almost 600 items) and a subject index. The book should be of value to engineers and consulting metallurgists, as well as to students who want to learn more about this branch of technology. It attempts to meet the needs of the growing number of engineers, technologists, and applied physicists who are engaged in the practical exploitation of magnetic separation.

Book excerpt: The discovery of uniform latex particles by polymer chemists of the Dow Chemical Company nearly 50 years ago opened up new exciting fields for scientists and physicians and established many new biomedical applications. Many in vitro diagnostic tests such as the latex agglutination tests, analytical cell and phagocytosis tests have since become rou tine. They were all developed on the basis of small particles bound to biological active molecules and fluorescent and radioactive markers. Further developments are ongoing, with the focus now shifted to applications of polymer particles in the controlled and di rected transport of drugs in living systems. Four important factors make microspheres interesting for in vivo applications: First, biocompatible polymer particles can be used to transport known amounts of drug and re lease them in a controlled fashion. Second, particles can be made of materials which bio degrade in living organisms without doing any harm. Third, particles with modified surfaces are able to avoid rapid capture by the reticuloendothelial system and therefore en hance their blood circulation time. Fourth, combining particles with specific molecules may allow organ-directed targeting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updating content from the author’s 2001 book Coal Desulfurization, this new title focuses on CO2 sequestration and utilization. It includes information on the theory and practical approaches to CO2 capture and recent advances in the use of sequestered CO2. Avoiding these pollutants requires either forgetting about the 250 billion tons of coal reserves the United States possesses or capturing and utilizing the pollutants in a profitable and environmentally responsible fashion. The book covers postcombustion and precombustion capture approaches for coal, and postcombustion capture can be generalized to many other fuels. Recent practical implementations at full-scale power facilities around the world are discussed. The book covers sequestering CO2 via underground, oceanic, biological, and other long-term CO2 storage methods. It also includes recent advances in utilizing CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, advances in storage with depleted oil and gas reservoirs and deep saline aquifers, and additional topics. The book also examines specific applications of pure CO2 and covers chemical conversion of CO2 to useful compounds. It answers questions like "Can we create methanol from coal?" or "Can we create ethanol from coal?" It is found that methanol and ethanol cannot be sustainably produced from coal power alone. However, oxalic acid can be created at a much lower energy cost than methanol or ethanol. Oxalic acid can be used to extract rare earths, which are not currently produced anywhere in the United States, but are typically concentrated in coal ash. Aimed at researchers and industry professionals in chemical, environmental, and energy engineering, this book provides insight and inspiration into capturing CO2 not merely as a response to regulatory pressure and climate change but as an inherently profitable and valuable venture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DOWNSTREAM INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY An affordable, easily accessible desk reference on biomanufacturing, focused on downstream recovery and purification Advances in the fundamental knowledge surrounding biotechnology, novel materials, and advanced engineering approaches continue to be translated into bioprocesses that bring new products to market at a significantly faster pace than most other industries. Industrial scale biotechnology and new manufacturing methods are revolutionizing medicine, environmental monitoring and remediation, consumer products, food production, agriculture, and forestry, and continue to be a major area of research. The downstream stage in industrial biotechnology refers to recovery, isolation, and purification of the microbial products from cell debris, processing medium and contaminating biomolecules from the upstream process into a finished product such as biopharmaceuticals and vaccines. Downstream process design has the greatest impact on overall biomanufacturing cost because not only does the biochemistry of different products ( e.g., peptides, proteins, hormones, antibiotics, and complex antigens) dictate different methods for the isolation and purification of these products, but contaminating byproducts can also reduce overall process yield, and may have serious consequences on clinical safety and efficacy. Therefore downstream separation scientists and engineers are continually seeking to eliminate, or combine, unit operations to minimize the number of process steps in order to maximize product recovery at a specified concentration and purity. Based on Wiley’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Biotechnology: Bioprocess, Bioseparation, and Cell Technology, this volume features fifty articles that provide information on down- stream recovery of cells and protein capture; process development and facility design; equipment; PAT in downstream processes; downstream cGMP operations; and regulatory compliance. It covers: Cell wall disruption and lysis Cell recovery by centrifugation and filtration Large-scale protein chromatography Scale down of biopharmaceutical purification operations Lipopolysaccharide removal Porous media in biotechnology Equipment used in industrial protein purification Affinity chromatography Antibody purification, monoclonal and polyclonal Protein aggregation, precipitation and crystallization Freeze-drying of biopharmaceuticals Biopharmaceutical facility design and validation Pharmaceutical bioburden testing Regulatory requirements Ideal for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses on biomanufacturing, biochemical engineering, biopharmaceutical facility design, biochemistry, industrial microbiology, gene expression technology, and cell culture technology, Downstream Industrial Biotechnology is also a highly recommended resource for industry professionals and libraries.

Part I, SQUIDs, comprises about 75% of this volume, and is devoted to small scale applications, mainly .§uperconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs), and the remainder, Part H, Machines, presents an updated review of large scale applications of superconduc tivity. The present book combined with the previous book Superconducting Machines and Devices: Large Systems Applications edited by S. Foner and B. B. Schwartz, Plenum Press, New York (1974) represents a detailed and most up-to-date review of the applications of superconducting tech nology. The text of the current book is suitable for advanced undergrad uates or graduate students in applied physics and engineering courses. The book should be valuable to scientists, engineers and technologists interested in the current status and future applications of superconduc tivity technology. The last 7 chapters in Part I review the major nation al efforts on small scale technology and should prove useful for industrial and government planners as weIl as scientists and engineers.
