Edward Aspinall and Ward Berenschot assess the informal networks and political strategies that shape access to power and privilege in the messy political environment of contemporary Indonesia. In post-Suharto Indonesian politics the exchange of patronage for political support is commonplace. Clientelism, argue the authors, saturates the political system, and in Democracy for Sale they reveal the everyday practices of vote buying, influence peddling, manipulating government programs, and skimming money from government projects. In doing so, Aspinall and Berenschot advance three major arguments. The first argument points toward the role of religion, kinship, and other identities in Indonesian clientelism. However, political structures and opportunities differ clearly in various contexts, and as such they have their own influences and consequences. The study of democracy and democratisation must be reinforced with research that emphasises local perspective over national ones, for it is at the local level that different centres of power interact and understandings of genuine democratic practices are created. It is in this spirit that this book attempts to examine the diverse problem of democracy and democratisation in various Indonesian localities, while also underscoring the importance of considering asymmetrical approaches to democratisation. A mapping of the different local regimes in Indonesia and necessary to understand how they respond to or even bypass the practice of democracy. This book, drawing on eleven case studies, reaches the conclusion that the varied local regimes in Indonesia can be grouped into five categories: formalist/elitist, consociational, pluralist/compromistic, socio-cultural, and formalist/deliberative. Through its mapping of local regimes in Indonesia, this book offer a new passion for the continued and substantive (re)setting of democratisation in Indonesia, which need not be limited to electoral democracy, but may rely on asymmetrical democracy—a democracy that understands and accommodates localities and fundamental for it development. The future democratisation of Indonesia can be truly “ in the regions, from the regions, for Indonesia”. Using such a logic, democracy will be manifested through a bottom-up process, and therefore offer the ability to jointly manages Indonesia’s unity in diversity.

Now brought back into print as a member of Equinox Publishing's Classic Indonesia series, The Decline of Constitutional Democracy is considered to be the definitive study of Indonesia in the 1950s and will be of great interest to the growing number of social scientists concerned with the pre-industrial nations and in particular with their efforts to use and adapt Western political institutions. This is a solid and scholarly account, but, writing on the basis of much personal observation, Dr. Feith manages to present his material in such a way that readers with no previous background in the subject will be able to follow the book almost as easily as will specialists. HERBERT FEITH (1930-2001) became familiar with Indonesia during 1951-53 and 1954-56 when he was an English Language Assistant with the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Indonesia. A citizen of Australia, he received an M.A. degree from the University of Melbourne in 1955 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1961. He was a Research Fellow in the Department of Pacific History, Australian National University, from 1960 to 1962 and was Chair of Politics at Monash University from 1968 until 1974.

In doing so, it provides a background to the theories and ideology that informed organicist thought, traces key themes in Indonesian history, examines the Soeharto regime and his ‘New Order’ in detail, and looks at contemporary Indonesia to question the possibility of past ideologies making a resurgence in the country. Beginning with an exploration of the origins of the theory of the organic state in Europe, this book explores how this influenced many young Indonesian scholars and ‘secular’ nationalists. It also looks in detail at the case of Japan, and identifies the parallels between the process by which Japanese and Indonesian nationalist scholars drew on European romantic organicist ideas to forge ‘anti-Western’ national identities and ideologies. The book then turns to Indonesia’s tumultuous history from the revolution to 1965, the rise of Soeharto, and how his regime used organicist ideology, together with law and terror, to shape the political landscape consolidate control. In turn, it shows how the social and economic changes wrought by the government’s policies, such as the rise of a cosmopolitan middle class and a rapidly growing urban proletariat led to the failure of the corporatist political infrastructure and the eventual collapse of the New Order in 1998. Finally, the epilogue surveys the post Soeharto years to 2014, and how growing disquiet about the inability of the government to contain religious intolerance, violence and corruption, has led to an increased readiness to re-embrace not only more authoritarian styles of rule but also ideological formulas from the past.
