Is it acceptable to complain to God? Should we bargain with him to receive the response we desire? Why do we praise God? Does our praise make him any more "God"? John Calvin argued basically that the purpose of prayer is to realign the petitioner's feelings and beliefs with God's. Many today seem to have adopted this idea. One says, "Why pray at all. God knows everything so my prayers cannot change his mind. I must pray to discover God's will for my life. I must realign my will with God's will for my life." In contrast, the psalmists assumed a reciprocal process. They believed they could bring pressures on God to answer their requests. They would bargain with God and promise him certain things if he would only grant their petitions. Indeed, this was part of the process. They would obligate themselves to praise God if he would grant their desires. Such bargaining was the foundation of their prayers. Comparisons of Calvin's views with the psalmists' allows the reader to investigate the nature of his or her prayer life and make improvements where necessary.

Book excerpt: Renowned pastor and New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller explores the power of prayer. Christians are taught in their churches and schools that prayer is the most powerful way to experience God. But few receive instruction or guidance in how to make prayer genuinely meaningful. In Prayer, renowned pastor Timothy Keller delves into the many facets of this everyday act. With his trademark insights and energy, Keller offers biblical guidance as well as specific prayers for certain situations, such as dealing with grief, loss, love, and forgiveness. He discusses ways to make prayers more personal and powerful, and how to establish a practice of prayer that works for each reader. Dr. Keller’s previous books have sold more than one million copies. His Redeemer Presbyterian Church is not only a major presence in his home base of New York, it has also helped to launch more than two hundred fifty other churches in forty-eight cities around the world. His teachings have already helped millions, the majority of whom pray regularly. And with Prayer, he’ll show them how to find a deeper connection with God.

And since Christ's ascension to the right hand of God, the Christian faithful have found in their words promise, comfort, guidance, challenge, confession, absolution, and, of course, Christ. Martin Luther especially focused on the numerous ways the psalmists referred to Christ and the salvation He brings'our mighty Fortress, our Shepherd, our Light.Reading the Psalms with Luther helps a new generation of Christians use the Psalter in a devotional manner. Each psalm opens with a brief introduction from Luther, revealing his understanding of the Christ-centered message of the psalm and its model for Christian prayer. Each psalm is pointed so it may be pray through chanting, just as it has been for centuries. Following the psalm text is a short prayer.Includes the ESV translation of the Psalms; a suggested schedule for reading the Psalter.

Book excerpt: From generation to generation, many Christians have adopted the habit of praying every month through all 150 psalms—songs that form the bedrock of both corporate worship and individual devotion. Through thousands of years of memorization, recitation, and singing, the people of God have found in this book a God-centered view of reality—words that put into perspective all our emotions, conflicting desires, times of suffering, and experiences of faith and doubt. In Psalms in 30 Days, Trevin Wax has adapted a centuries-old approach to reading the psalms by providing a "Morning," "Midday" and "Evening" pattern—following the Scriptural precedent for praying three times a day. This journey through the psalms, as translated in the Christian Standard Bible® (CSB), also features other songs from the Bible, as well as written prayers from faithful Christians who have gone before us. Here is a guide to praying all the psalms every month by—three times a day—lifting your eyes above your circumstances and reminding yourself that God is the blazing center of all things. Psalms in 30 Days features the highly readable, highly reliable text of the Christian Standard Bible® (CSB). The CSB stays as literal as possible to the Bible's original meaning without sacrificing clarity, making it easier to engage with Scripture's life-transforming message and to share it with others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you pray? Do you think praying is either a fearful mystery or a dry duty? If you want to get past feelings of futility and change your world through prayer, then Changing Me, Change the World is the answer. This book connects Gods Word and your prayers. It will strengthen your faith and instill confidence in you to pray more effectively, molding you into a prayer warrior in the process. "Most people define prayer as communication with God. However, that is like defining a jet fighter as air transportation; it describes neither its purpose nor its function. The purpose of prayer, in the spiritual war we fight daily, is to release Gods will on earth; it functions as a weapon delivery system. The writer of Hebrews says, The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. Prayer, the arm of spiritual warfare, wields the sword of the Word. Changing Me, Change the World models these concepts by turning the forty-one chapters in Book One of the Psalms into contemporary and passionate prayers. These prayers look deeply at a variety of topics including confession, joyful praise, healing, the persecuted church, and many others. It solidly connects the Word of God and prayers offered according to Gods will. It will lead another step further in your spiritual maturity. It looks to strengthen your faith and to instill confidence in your ability to pray effectively, molding you into a prayer warrior in the process." You will discover: a deeper, more satisfying prayer life as you meditate on these Psalms and prayers, passionate, engaging language that addresses problems you face in your life every day, prayers you can pray with confidence because they have a solid biblical foundation, a heightened awareness of meaningful issues outside of your daily life, a desire to return to Changing Me, Change the World as new situations arise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weariness. Wonder. Joy. Longing. Anger. These are the feelings of the Psalms: honest expressions of pain and joy penned by real people in the midst of real life circumstances. Though they were written centuries ago, the Psalms still resonate deeply with us today, giving voice to our thoughts and longings: "Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD." (Psalm 130:1) "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1) "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God." (Psalm 84:2) In Learning to Pray Through the Psalms, James W. Sire teaches us to take our appreciation for this rich book of Scripture a step further. Choosing ten specific psalms, Sire offers background information that helps us read each one with deeper insight and then lays out a meditative, step-by-step approach to using the psalmists' words as a guide for our own personal conversation with God. A group study is also included in each chapter, along with a guide for praying through the psalm in community. The Lord loves when his people pray. And his Word is a powerful tool for framing honest, intimate prayers. Sire's innovative approach will enrich our minds and our souls as we read more perceptively and pray with all of our emotions.
