Book excerpt: The EU’s Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency obliges Member States to develop programmes to encourage small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to improve energy efficiency by implementing energy audits and the recommendations that stem from these audits. This study looks at the barriers that SMEs face and the existing policy instruments in more detail and analyses which practices are working. The study concludes that SMEs cannot be effectively targeted with solely uniform solutions even within the same country and even though many of them face similar barriers. More emphasis is needed on sharing information and best practices and guiding SMEs to implement energy efficiency improvements after having identified the opportunities. The good news is that many good practices already exist and there is potential to improve. Now it is just a question of taking action.

Book excerpt: The overall aim of this thesis is to analyze how municipalities support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their work to improve their energy efficiency. The purpose of this study is to increase the current understanding of how the methods and tools used by municipalities to assist SMEs in improving their energy efficiency influence the end results in terms of achieved energy efficiency, and how knowledge related to energy efficiency is created within SMEs. This thesis consists of two separate case studies that examine how two municipalities used a network approach to support SMEs in implementing energy efficient measures. The theoretical frameworks of policy networks, barriers, communities of practice (COPs), and energy efficiency networks were used in this thesis. The findings are presented in the appended four articles. An overall conclusion is that networks that provide information in the form of a report with technological solutions as the only output are less likely to reach the agreed-upon goals. To achieve a more successful result, SMEs must be active in the process; they must be allowed to create knowledge and understanding that they perceive as valuable and relevant for themselves. Another important result is that information is not automatically transformed by SMEs into knowledge. In fact, SMEs need a platform from which they can negotiate the received information and use it to create knowledge through practice and social interaction. Finally, it was found that the type of technological solution is not insignificant; the type of energy efficient measure to be implemented and its level of complexity affect how a municipality should support energy efficiency work among SMEs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carbon Trust was set up in 2001 to take the lead on low carbon technology and innovation in the United Kingdom. Its aim is to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy by helping organisations reduce their current carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and developing commercial low carbon technologies. In 2006-07, the advice and financial support for measures to reduce carbon dioxide provided by the Trust resulted in an estimated reduction in CO2 emissions by its customers of between 1.2 million and 2.0 million tonnes, equivalent to a projected net financial saving of between £222 million and £359 million in future reduced energy costs. The Carbon Trust estimates that its work supporting the development of low carbon technology up to March 2007 could lead to an annual reduction of between 13.7 million and 20.7 million tonnes of CO2 by 2050. The Trust's support to commercialise emerging low carbon technologies could lead to further sizeable CO2 emissions reductions in the future. The Trust's support of such enterprises has encouraged the private sector to invest £2 for every £1 it has committed to its Innovation Programme and £10 for every £1 committed to its venture capital investments. On this basis the Carbon Trust's advice to businesses has proved value for money and its Innovation Programme appears to be on course to do likewise. The Carbon Trust has worked with at least 12 per cent of companies with energy bills of over £50,000 a year, but wider market penetration could generate greater reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

Book excerpt: This volume is a practical guide that helps the reader build a quick, evidence-based understanding of green-growth strategies and challenges. Its cogent analysis of real-life case studies enables policy makers and company executives identify successful strategies they can adopt, and pitfalls they can avoid, in drafting and implementing green growth policies. The contributors’ empirical assessment of these studies identifies the structural conditions required for economic growth to be compatible with environmental sustainability and how the transition to a new economic paradigm should be managed. A crucial addition to the debate now beginning in earnest around the world, this volume attempts to understand how we can nurture a new-born model of sustainable growth and help it evolve to maturity.

This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We need to know what opportunities there are and what limits exist to the improvement of energy efficiency, since this is the most cost-effective way to abate greenhouse gas emissions. This book presents a method whereby promising technologies can be identified and characterised that can contribute to an improvement of energy efficiency in the long term. An objective measurement of maximum improvement is provided by an analysis of the theoretical minimum specific energy demand. A descriptive inventory is then given of new and conceivable technologies that can improve efficiency, extending beyond the standard lists found in the literature. The method is applied to three main energy consuming branches of industry: paper and board, iron and steel, and nitrogen fertilizer. Each of the studies provides an in-depth analysis of the industry and an extensive survey of options for its improvement.
