Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the anti-jam performance of an adaptive spread spectrum communication's system. The adaptive filter is assumed to be ideal in that it perfectly locates the jamming signal and adapts its bandwidth to exactly filter out the jamming signal. The colored-noise (jammer) and bandlimited white noise are considered to have flat power spectral densities within their respective bandwidths. The spread spectrum technique considered is that of direct sequence modulation. Three criteria are used to evaluate the system: autocorrelation peak degradation, signal-to-noise ratio, and intersymbol interference. The results indicate that an adaptive spread spectrum communication's system is able to provide an increased jam resistant communication system. (Author).

Book excerpt: CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is one type of multiple access system used in radio communication. Other multiple access methods include TDMA, FDMA, etc. WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is the main air interface used for third generation mobile communication systems - UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) and is characterised by a wider band than CDMA. WCDMA uses a wider radio band than CDMA, which was used for 2G systems, and has a high transfer rate and increased system capacity and communication quality by statistical multiplexing, etc. WCDMA efficiently utilises the radio spectrum to provide a maximum data rate of 2 Mbit/s. Third generation mobile communication systems are scheduled for operational startup in Japan and Europe in 2001-2002. Applying high-speed data transfer and state-of-the-art radio terminal technology, third generations systems enable multimedia and are currently in the process of being standardised under 3GPP. Among the three types of system to be standardised (i.e. WCDMA, MC-CDMA, UTRA TDD), Japan and Europe will adopt WCDMA in a strategy to take the lead through superior service. This volume will cover the latest theoretical principles of WCDMA and explain why these principles are used in the standards. Book excerpt: Interference and jamming signals are a serious concern in an operational military communication environment. This thesis examines the utility and performance of combining adaptive temporal filtering with adaptive spatial filtering (i.e. adaptive beamforming) to improve the signal-to-jammer ratio (SJR) in the presence of narrowband and wideband interference. Adaptive temporal filters are used for narrowband interference suppression while adaptive beamforming is used to suppress wideband interference signals. A procedure is presented for the design and implementation of a linear constraints minimum variance generalized sidelobe canceler (LCMV-GSC) beamformer. The adaptive beamformer processes the desired signal with unity gain while simultaneously and adaptively minimizing the output due to any undesired signal. Using the LCMV-GSC beamformer with a least mean squares (LMS) adaptive algorithm, it was shown that the tapped delay line (TDL) adaptive antenna array is more effective for the suppression of wideband jammer suppression than the linear array sensors (LAS) adaptive antenna array. Also a new technique for adaptive beamforming is presented which improves wideband interference suppression in a frequency-hopped environment. The output SJR improvement for the new technique compared to the conventional technique is as much as 15dB. Sometimes, multipath signals and jammers generated by a smart enemy are correlated with the desired signal which destroys the traditional beamformer's performance. After performing a spatial smoothing technique, adaptive beamforming can also be effective in suppressing the jamming signals that are highly correlated with the desired signal.

The first portion considers the synthesis of spreading waveforms using full binary tree multi-rate filterbank design techniques. Non-binary spreading waveforms are produced that are optimized for multi-user, multipath and interference channels and shown to out-perform some conventional spreading sequences. The second part of the report describes and evaluates a spread spectrum version of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) wherein the same information is transmitted on multiple orthogonal carriers, creating both time and frequency diversity. In the receiver, time domain and transform domain excision are used to improve performance in pulsed wideband or narrowband jamming, respectively. In addition, the report considers replacing the inverse and forward FFT's commonly used in OFDM systems with inverse and forward Modulated Lapped Transforms (MLT's). Performance results demonstrate the effectiveness of the techniques. For both the spreading waveform design and OFDM work, simulations were performed using the Signal Processing WorkSystem (SPW) from AltaGroup of Cadence Design Systems, Inc.

These networks were originally envisioned as collections of autonomous mobile or stationary nodes that dynamically auto-configure themselves into a wireless network without relying on any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. With the significant advances in the last decade, the concept of ad hoc networks now covers an even broader scope, referring to the many types of autonomous wireless networks designed and deployed for a specific task or function, such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, home networks, and so on. In contrast to the traditional wireless networking paradigm, such networks are all characterized by sporadic connections, highly error-prone communications, distributed autonomous operation, and fragile multi-hop relay paths. The new wireless networking paradigm necessitates reexamination of many established concepts and protocols, and calls for developing a new understanding of fundamental problems such as interference, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others.
