Dernièrement, on a pu constater l'émergence d'une nouvelle technique où le patient se procure les produits en vente libre et réalise seul son traitement sans aucun contrôle professionnel. Or, on ne connaît pas actuellement les conséquences à long terme de ce type de traitement, particulièrement lorsqu'ils sont répétés régulièrement. Les principes des réactions semblent toutefois être bien compris de nos jours, mais leurs effets secondaires sont plus difficiles à évaluer notamment en ce qui concerne les tissus durs de la dent. Les conséquences au niveau de l'émail restent, encore aujourd'hui, sujet à controverses, d'autant plus que le pH de certaines solutions commerciales est plutôt acide. L'étude in vitro réalisée dans ce travail tente d'évaluer les effets sur la morphologie de l'émail de deux concentrations différentes d'un même agent d'éclaircissement. Les dents, coupées en trois fragments, sont traitées une ou trois fois avec le même agent et les échantillons, ainsi obtenus, sont observés et comparés au microscope électronique à balayage. L'application de cet agent actif a entraîné des modifications de la morphologie de surface amélaire telles qu'un aplanissement et une augmentation de la rugosité. Ces changements augmentent et s'intensifient après trois traitements d'éclaircissement quelle que soit la concentration utilisée.

L'émergence des produits d'éclaircissement en vente libre, ainsi que la répétition des traitements nous conduit à nous interroger sur les conséquences de ces traitements à moyen et long terme. Il est établi aujourd'hui que le fluor a un rôle de prévention et de protection contre la déminéralisation de l'émail. Il semble que le vernis soit un très bon vecteur pour jouer ce rôle. Il serait donc intéressant d'utiliser ce rôle protecteur du fluor pour prévenir la déminéralisation conséquente au blanchiment. Mais aujourd'hui, nous ne savons pas si le vernis fluoré constitue un obstacle au processus d'éclaircissement. Nous avons donc effectué deux études. Une première étude menée in vivo à l'aide d'un colorimètre numérique portait sur l'application de vernis immédiatement avant l'éclaircissement. Nous avons conclu que l'application de vernis fluoré n'empêche pas l'éclaircissement. Une deuxième étude, in vitro sur la microdureté de l'émail, a montré que les produits à 5.9 et à 35% de peroxyde d'hydrogène provoquaient une diminution de la microdureté, tandis que l'application de vernis avant et après l'éclaircissement empêche cette diminution de microdureté. Les résultats montrent donc qu'il faut favoriser le renouvellement des applications de vernis fluoré lors des traitements d'éclaircissement.

Many people have little commonsense knowledge about nature—are unable, for example, to identify local plants and trees or describe how these plants and animals interact. Researchers report dwindling knowledge of nature even in smaller, nonindustrialized societies. In The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature, Scott Atran and Douglas Medin trace the cognitive consequences of this loss of knowledge. Drawing on nearly two decades of cross-cultural and developmental research, they examine the relationship between how people think about the natural world and how they act on it and how these are affected by cultural differences. These studies, which involve a series of targeted comparisons among cultural groups living in the same environment and engaged in the same activities, reveal critical universal aspects of mind as well as equally critical cultural differences. Atran and Medin find that, despite a base of universal processes, the cultural differences in understandings of nature are associated with significant differences in environmental decision making as well as intergroup conflict and stereotyping stemming from these differences. The book includes two intensive case studies, one focusing on agro-forestry among Maya Indians and Spanish speakers in Mexico and Guatemala and the other on resource conflict between Native-American and European-American fishermen in Wisconsin. The Native Mind and the Cultural Construction of Nature offers new perspectives on general theories of human categorization, reasoning, decision making, and cognitive development.
