Download or read book The Asia Crisis written by Mr.Andrew Berg and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper tells the story of the Asian financial crisis by addressing four questions: What were the causes of the crisis, how did the crisis unfold, what were the policy responses, and what have been the outcomes? The paper takes the view that none of these questions can be understood without appreciating the fundamental vulnerabilities that left authorities without effective tools to counter sudden capital outflows. The pattern of output decline suggests that these vulnerabilities, particularly weaknesses in domestic financial systems, played a larger role than tight monetary policy in determining outcomes.
Book Synopsis IMF-Supported Programs by : Mr.Ashoka Mody
Download or read book IMF-Supported Programs written by Mr.Ashoka Mody and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2006-04-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research work by the IMF’s staff on the effectiveness of the country programs the organization supports, which has long been carried out, has intensified in recent years. IMF analysts have sought to “open up the black box” by more closely examining program design and implementation, as well as how these influence programs’ effectiveness. Their efforts have also focused on identifying the lending, signaling, and monitoring features of the IMF that may affect member countries’ economic performance. This book reports on a large portion of both the new and the continuing research. It concludes that IMF programs work best where domestic politics and institutions permit the timely implementation of the necessary measures and when a country is vulnerable to, but not yet in, a crisis. It points to the need for a wider recognition of the substantial diversity among IMF member countries and for programs to be tailored accordingly while broadly maintaining the IMF’s general principle of uniformity of treatment.
Book Synopsis IMF and the Asian Financial Crisis by : Peter G. Zhang
Download or read book IMF and the Asian Financial Crisis written by Peter G. Zhang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) needs little introduction. Its visible and contentious involvement in the regional crisis have attracted inordinate media attention both good and bad. On one end of the scale, it has been portrayed as an institutionalized financial messiah, whose mere presence is able to resurrect emaciated economies and restore the public's confidence. However, at the same time it is also regarded by others as a Western-dominated financial bludgeon whose measures are aimed to break open developing economies for foreign pickings. It is not difficult to find that such disparate and extreme opinions are however, underscored by a common want of understanding of the primary aims and functions of the IME Despite the IMF's prominence and its crucial participation in resuscitating these ailing Asian economies, its exact functions and operations remains and enigma to many. As such it is difficult to be either critical or truly appreciative of its recent efforts. This book provides a quick overview of the institution over half a greater emphasis on its more current role in Asia. Furthermore, with the relentless trend towards a more integrated and developed global economy, the IMF relevance in this respect will not doubt be accentuated. This institution's increasing visibility in world economic and social affairs will make knowledge about the organization and its activities an indispensable asset, notwithstanding the current regional crisis.
Book Synopsis The East Asian Crisis by : Ms.Kalpana Kochhar
Download or read book The East Asian Crisis written by Ms.Kalpana Kochhar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews macroeconomic developments during the first year of the crisis in east Asia and draws some preliminary policy lessons. The crisis is rooted in the interaction of large capital inflows and weak private and public sector governance. At the same time, macroeconomic adjustment in these countries has resulted in some surprising outcomes, including severe economic contractions, low inflation, and rapid external adjustment. The lessons for crisis resolution include the importance of tight monetary policy early on for exchange rate stabilization, flexible fiscal policy, and comprehensive structural reform. Crises are avoided by prudent macroeconomic policies, diligent bank supervision, transparent data dissemination, strong governance, and forward-looking policymaking, even in good times.

This book was released on 2001-12-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the link between product variety and economic growth. It finds support for the hypothesis that a greater degree of product variety relative to the United States helps to explain relative per capita GDP levels. The paper presents an empirical study for South Africa, which indicates that there exists a stable money demand type of relationship among domestic prices, broad money, real income, and interest rates, as well as a long-term relationship among domestic prices, foreign prices, and the nominal exchange rate.
Book Synopsis Fiscal Adjustment in IMF-Supported Programs by : International Monetary Fund. Independent Evaluation Office
Download or read book Fiscal Adjustment in IMF-Supported Programs written by International Monetary Fund. Independent Evaluation Office and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-11-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a cross-country sample of 169 IMF-supported programs and detailed studies of 15 programs, this evaluation report examines various aspects of fiscal adjustment in IMF-supported programs. It presents evidence that does not support some critics’ view that IMF-supported programs typically adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to fiscal adjustment, nor the perception that programs always involve austerity by targeting reductions in public spending. The report also proposes a number of recommendations for IMF surveillance and program design in the future.
Book Synopsis Sequencing Capital Account Liberalization by : Claudia Echeverria

Book Synopsis The International Monetary Fund under Constraint by : Eva Riesenhuber
Download or read book The International Monetary Fund under Constraint written by Eva Riesenhuber and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund under Constraint exposes a legal dilemma facing the IMF as it tackles international crisis management. Using the Asian crisis - and more particularly economic and political events in Indonesia - as an example, this volume examines whether the Fund's activities in Asia were legally justified. The results of this analysis lead to the following question: What future role can the IMF play in the international financial architecture? The principles of international law and the legal foundations of the Fund are used to analyse the reform suggestions of economic experts and to find a suitable concept for future IMF involvement in financial crises and crises prevention. This volume is a long-overdue legal analysis of IMF activities. It presents the combination of law and economics which was originally at the heart of the IMF but which so far has been ignored in today's reform discussion.

Book Synopsis The Economies of Southeast Asia by : Teofilo C. Daquila
Download or read book The Economies of Southeast Asia written by Teofilo C. Daquila and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the growth, development and crisis experiences of the Southeast Asian economies, in particular, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - also known as ASEAN-5. The proposition is developed that the robust economic performance of the Southeast Asian economies during the past four decades has been attributed to the various factors, developments and independent national policies which have been pursued by the individual member countries rather than to any regional economic framework. The book covers eleven topics which is suitable for a one-semester course on the economics of Southeast Asia. Also, it has a narrower area coverage as it focuses only on the five economies, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The sectoral treatment of the crisis impact and the analytical treatment of policy responses to the crisis differentiate this book from other publications on the same topic. Finally, this book provides an analysis of national developments, policies and factors which have contributed to the economic transformation of the respective Southeast Asian economies.
