Book excerpt: Dr. G.C. Dilsaver is rightly considered by many to be the father of Christian psychology, for his book Imago Dei Psychotherapy (IDP) enunciated the foundational principles of the first fully integrated Christian psychotherapeutic conceptualization. The Imago Dei Psychotherapy (IDP) conceptualization is based on the premise that the fullest understanding of human nature is found in traditional Christian, and especially Thomistic, anthropology, which delineates human moral action in its cognitive, volitional, and emotional elements. IDP maintains that locating the behavioral science of psychology within this traditional Christian anthropology of moral action unleashes that science s full and unprecedented clinical efficacy. Imago Dei Psychotherapy can be read with immense benefit not only by Catholics and Christians but by all who seek the most efficacious clinical means to mental health.

Book excerpt: Psychomoralitics is groundbreaking, nothing less than revolutionary, scholarship in applied humanistic intervention! Unlike the politicized and committee generated "science" of mental health, psychomoralitics is a thoroughly developed and expostulated science built upon the most time-tested conceptualization of integral human nature. As a completely divergent and antithetical discipline to those of the mental health professions, psychomoralitics is also the very remedy and antidote to the iatrogenic harms caused by those professions. Psychomoralitics, the soul-deep science of human flourishing, uniquely synthesizes natural law, perennial ancient wisdom, and cutting-edge research. Psychomoralitics intervenes at the inorganic causative level of the reason, free will, and the passions to remedy essential mal-being and ego-reactivity. Psychomoralitic intervention vivifies a person's ability to receive-the-real, assent-to-truth, and choose-the-good, so as to bring about essential well-being & innermost peace.Unlike the politicized and committee generated "science" of mental health, Psychomoralitics is a thoroughly developed and expostulated science built upon the most time-tested conceptualization of integral human nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crucialism is an ethos theology that specifically explicates and exhorts the lived out dynamics of faith, truths, morals, and values as they apply to a person or people's in relationship with the contemporary milieu. The intersect of faith, truths, morals, and values and the contemporary milieu is what determines the emphases in an ethos theology. Crucialism is based on the premise that third millennium Catholics, along with their contemporaries, are enmeshed in a confusing maze of relativism and escapism, all enabled and enhanced by material abundance and technological advances. As such, crucialism aims at an essential and relevant presentation of not only divinely revealed truths, but those of natural law as well."Grace builds upon nature," and thus grace is most efficaciously placed upon a firm foundation of nature. However, today there is a disconnect and rejection of both nature and natural law. The truths of faith and reason designated as crucial and highlighted herein, aim at challenging third millennium Christians to their courageous, countercultural, and militant implementation.Serendipitously enough, crucial means both "cross-conformed" and "of vital importance." For the Christian, the Cross is indeed of singular vital importance: "Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." MT 16:24. In practice, it is being conformed to the Holy Cross and to Christ Crucified that is of the most vital importance to the Christian. As such, crucialism aims to highlight those essentials of the Gospel that will most saliently mandate the Christian's embrace of the Holy Cross in the dawning third millennium, and thus most adequately ensure the perseverance in, and the promulgation of, the Holy Catholic Faith.

Book excerpt: The unique relationship between word and image in ancient Egypt is a defining feature of that ancient culture's records. All hieroglyphic texts are composed of images, and large-scale figural imagery in temples and tombs is often accompanied by texts. Epigraphy and palaeography are two distinct, but closely related, ways of recording, analyzing, and interpreting texts and images. This Handbook stresses technical issues about recording text and art and interpretive questions about what we do with those records and why we do it. It offers readers three key things: a diachronic perspective, covering all ancient Egyptian scripts from prehistoric Egypt through the Coptic era (fourth millennium BCE-first half of first millennium CE), a look at recording techniques that considers the past, present, and future, and a focus on the experiences of colleagues. The diachronic perspective illustrates the range of techniques used to record different phases of writing in different media. The consideration of past, present, and future techniques allows readers to understand and assess why epigraphy and palaeography is or was done in a particular manner by linking the aims of a particular effort with the technique chosen to reach those aims. The choice of techniques is a matter of goals and the records' work circumstances, an inevitable consequence of epigraphy being a double projection: geometrical, transcribing in two dimensions an object that exists physically in three; and mental, an interpretation, with an inevitable selection among the object's defining characteristics. The experiences of colleagues provide a range of perspectives and opinions about issues such as techniques of recording, challenges faced in the field, and ways of reading and interpreting text and image. These accounts are interesting and instructive stories of innovation in the face of scientific conundrum.

Book excerpt: The noted Catholic psychologist Dr. G.C. Dilsaver writes that the time has come for Catholic families to re-discover true patriarchy--time for Catholic men to accept and fulfill their role as leader and head of their families. The role of Christian manhood, as ordained by God and confirmed by Catholic teaching, is symbolized by three staffs: the Scepter of authority and self-discipline, the Crosier of spiritual headship, and the Cross of redemptive suffering. Dr. Dilsaver promotes a new and untainted patriarchy in which the husband's ultimate authority is rooted in Christ's example of humility and self-sacrificing love. Three Marks of Manhood can help Christian families realize their identity to the fullest--empowering them to resist the encroachment of secular culture. Read it and learn how to build a strong and lasting marriage, raise children to become faithful men and women of God, and foster an authentic Catholic culture in your home. Dr. Dilsaver, with his development of the first fully integrated Christian psychology, Imago Dei Psychotherapy, is truly the father of Christian Psychology; with the publication of Three Marks of Manhood he may also be the father of a new Christian patriarchy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus of Nazareth makes reference to one of the oldest beliefs in the ancient world - the malignity of an Evil Eye. The Holy Scriptures in their original languages contain no less than twenty-four references to the Evil Eye, although this is obscured by most modern Bible translations. John H. Elliott's Beware the Evil Eye describes this belief and associated practices, its history, its voluminous appearances in ancient cultures, and the extensive research devoted to it over the centuries in order to unravel this enigma for readers who have never heard of the Evil Eye and its presence in the Bible. This is the first of a four-volume work on the Evil Eye.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five distinguished scholars here summarize the state of current knowledge about ancient Egyptian temples and the rituals associated with their use. The first volume in English to survey the major types of Egyptian temples from the Old Kingdom to the Roman period, it offers a unique perspective on ritual and its cultural significance. The authors perceive temples as loci for the creative interplay of sacred space and sacred time. They regard as unacceptable the traditional division of the temples into the categories of "mortuary" and "divine", believing that their functions and symbolic representations were, at once, too varied and too intertwined. Both informative to scholars and accessible to students, the book combines descriptions of specific temples with new insights into their development and purposes.

Book excerpt: The recent centennial of the original publication of Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams has generated a new wave of critical reappraisals of this monumental work. Considered one of the most important books in Western history, scholars from an astonishing variety of academic fields continue to wrestle with Freud's intricate theories and insights. Dreams is a long overdue collection of writing on dreams from many of the top scholars in religious studies, anthropology, and psychology departments. The volume is organized into three thematic sections: traditions, individuals and methods. The twenty-three articles highlight the most important theories, the most contentious debates, and the most far-reaching implications of this growing field of study.
