Book excerpt: Concurrency in Dependable Computing focuses on concurrency related issues in the area of dependable computing. Failures of system components, be hardware units or software modules, can be viewed as undesirable events occurring concurrently with a set of normal system events. Achieving dependability therefore is closely related to, and also benefits from, concurrency theory and formalisms. This beneficial relationship appears to manifest into three strands of work. Application level structuring of concurrent activities. Concepts such as atomic actions, conversations, exception handling, view synchrony, etc., are useful in structuring concurrent activities so as to facilitate attempts at coping with the effects of component failures. Replication induced concurrency management. Replication is a widely used technique for achieving reliability. Replica management essentially involves ensuring that replicas perceive concurrent events identically. Application of concurrency formalisms for dependability assurance. Fault-tolerant algorithms are harder to verify than their fault-free counterparts due to the fact that the impact of component faults at each state need to be considered in addition to valid state transitions. CSP, Petri nets, CCS are useful tools to specify and verify fault-tolerant designs and protocols. Concurrency in Dependable Computing explores many significant issues in all three strands. To this end, it is composed as a collection of papers written by authors well-known in their respective areas of research. To ensure quality, the papers are reviewed by a panel of at least three experts in the relevant area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art guide to middleware technologies, and their pivotal role in communications networks. Middleware is about integration and interoperability of applications and services running on heterogeneous computing and communications devices. The services it provides - including identification, authentication, authorization, soft-switching, certification and security - are used in a vast range of global appliances and systems, from smart cards and wireless devices to mobile services and e-Commerce. Qusay H. Mahmoud has created an invaluable reference tool that explores the origins and current uses of middleware (highlighting the importance of such technologies as CORBA, J2EE and JMS) and has thus compiled the roadmap to future research in this area. Middleware for Communications: discusses the emerging fields of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) and grid middleware detailing middleware platforms such as JXTA and the Globus middleware toolkit. shows how Middleware will play a significant role in mobile computing. presents a Platform Supporting Mobile Applications (PLASMA) - a middleware platform that consists of components for location, event, and profile handling of Location-Based Services. introduces middleware security focusing on the appropriate aspects of CORBA, J2EE, and .NET and demonstrates how to realize complex security capabilities such as role-based access control (RBAC) and mandatory access control (MAC). discusses how Quality of Service (QoS) component middleware can be combined with Model Driven Architecture (MDA) technologies to rapidly develop, generate, assemble and deploy flexible communications applications. This incomparable overview of middleware for communications is suitable for graduate students and researchers in communications and computing departments. It is also an authoritative guide for engineers and developers working on distributed systems, mobile computing and networked appliances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Step Towards Verified Software Worries about the reliability of software are as old as software itself; techniques for allaying these worries predate even James King’s 1969 thesis on “A program verifier. ” What gives the whole topic a new urgency is the conjunction of three phenomena: the blitz-like spread of software-rich systems to control ever more facets of our world and our lives; our growing impatience with deficiencies; and the development—proceeding more slowly, alas, than the other two trends—of techniques to ensure and verify software quality. In 2002 Tony Hoare, one of the most distinguished contributors to these advances over the past four decades, came to the conclusion that piecemeal efforts are no longer sufficient and proposed a “Grand Challenge” intended to achieve, over 15 years, the production of a verifying compiler: a tool that while processing programs would also guarantee their adherence to specified properties of correctness, robustness, safety, security and other desirable properties. As Hoare sees it, this endeavor is not a mere research project, as might normally be carried out by one team or a small consortium of teams, but a momentous endeavor, comparable in its scope to the successful mission to send a man to the moon or to the sequencing of the human genome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is always a special honor to chair the European Dependable Computing C- ference (EDCC). EDCC has become one of the well-established conferences in the ?eld of dependability in the European research area. Budapest was selected as the host of this conference due to its traditions in organizing international scienti?c events and its traditional role of serving as a meeting point between East and West. EDCC-5 was the ?fth in the series of these high-quality scienti?c conf- ences. In addition to the overall signi?cance of such a pan-European event, this year’s conference was a special one due to historic reasons. The roots of EDCC date back to the moment when the Iron Curtain fell. Originally, two groups of scientists from di?erent European countries in Western and Eastern Europe – who were active in research and education related to dependability created a – joint forum in order to merge their communities as early as in 1989. This trend has continued up to today. This year’s conference was the ?rst one where the overwhelming majority of the research groups belong to the family of European nations united in the European Union. During the past 16 years we observed that the same roots in all the professional, cultural and scienti?c senses led to a seamless integration of these research communities previously separated ar- ?cially for a long time. EDCC has become one of the main European platforms to exchange new - searchideasinthe?eldofdependability.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Software and Compilers for Embedded Systems, SCOPES 2003, held in Vienna, Austria, September 24–26, 2003. Initially, the workshop was referred to as the International Workshop on Code Generation for Embedded Systems. The ?rst workshop took place in 1994 in Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany. From its beg- nings, the intention of the organizers was to create an atmosphere in which the researcherscould participateactively in dynamic discussionsand pro?t from the assembly of international experts in the ?eld. It was at the fourth workshop, in St. Goar, Germany, in 1999, that the spectrum of topics of interest for the workshop was extended, and not only code generation, but also software and compilers for embedded systems, were considered. The change in ?elds of interest led to a change of name, and this is when the present name was used for the ?rst time. Since then, SCOPES has been held again in St. Goar, Germany, in 2001; Berlin, Germany, in 2002; and this year, 2003, in Vienna, Austria. In response to the call for papers, 43 very strong papers from all over the world were submitted. The program committee selected 26 papers for pres- tation at SCOPES 2003. All submitted papers were reviewed by at least three experts in order to ensure the quality of the work presented at the workshop.
