Book excerpt: This book presents the notes from the seminar on wave phenomena given in 2019 at the Mathematical Research Center in Oberwolfach. The research on wave-type problems is a fascinating and emerging field in mathematical research with many challenging applications in sciences and engineering. Profound investigations on waves require a strong interaction of several mathematical disciplines including functional analysis, partial differential equations, mathematical modeling, mathematical physics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. The goal of this book is to present a comprehensive introduction to the research on wave phenomena. Starting with basic models for acoustic, elastic, and electro-magnetic waves, topics such as the existence of solutions for linear and some nonlinear material laws, efficient discretizations and solution methods in space and time, and the application to inverse parameter identification problems are covered. The aim of this book is to intertwine analysis and numerical mathematics for wave-type problems promoting thus cooperative research projects in this field.

Book excerpt: IJ:1 June of 1987 the Center for Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at San Jose State University received a bequest of over half a million dollars from the estate of Mrs. Marie Woodward. In the opening article of this collection of papers Jane Day, the founder of the Center, describes the background that led to this gift. In recognition of the bequest it was decided that a series of Woodward Conferences be established. The First Woodward Conference took place at San Jose State University on June 2-3 1988. The themes of the conference were the Theoretical, Computational and Practical Aspects of Wave Phenomena and these same themes have been used to divide the contributions to this volume. Part I is concerned with papers on theoretical aspects. This section includes papers on pseudo-differential operator techniques, inverse problems and the mathematical foundations of wave propagation in random media. Part II consists of papers that involve significant amounts of computation. Included are papers on the Fast Hartley Transform, computational algorithms for electromagnetic scattering problems, and nonlinear wave interaction problems in fluid mechanics. vi Part III contains papers with a genuine physics flavor. This final section illustrates the widespread importance of wave phenomena in physics. Among the phenomena considered are waves in the atmosphere, viscous fingering in liquid crystals, solitons and wave localization.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Identification Problems via Functional Analysis by : Alfredo Lorenzi
Download or read book An Introduction to Identification Problems via Functional Analysis written by Alfredo Lorenzi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: this monograph is based on two courses in computational mathematics and operative research, which were given by the author in recent years to doctorate and PhD students. The text focuses on an aspect of the theory of inverse problems, which is usually referred to as identification of parameters (numbers, vectors, matrices, functions) appearing in differential – or integrodifferential – equations. The parameters of such equations are either quite unknown or partially unknown, however knowledge about these is usually essential as they describe the intrinsic properties of the material or substance under consideration.

Download or read book Kernel Determination Problems in Hyperbolic Integro-Differential Equations written by Durdimurod K. Durdiev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-18 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the construction methods for solving one-dimensional and multidimensional inverse dynamical problems for hyperbolic equations with memory. The theorems of uniqueness, stability and existence of solutions of these inverse problems are obtained. This book discusses the processes, by using generalized solutions, the spread of elastic or electromagnetic waves arising from sources of the type of pulsed directional “impacts” or “explosions”. This book presents new results in the study of local and global solvability of kernel determination problems for a half-space. It describes the problems of reconstructing the coefficients of differential equations and the convolution kernel of hyperbolic integro-differential equations by the method of Dirichlet-to-Neumann. The book will be useful for researchers and students specializing in the field of inverse problems of mathematical physics.

Book Synopsis Inverse Problems of Wave Processes by : A. S. Blagoveshchenskii
Download or read book Inverse Problems of Wave Processes written by A. S. Blagoveshchenskii and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph covers dynamical inverse problems, that is problems whose data are the values of wave fields. It deals with the problem of determination of one or more coefficients of a hyperbolic equation or a system of hyperbolic equations. The desired coefficients are functions of point. Most attention is given to the case where the required functions depend only on one coordinate. The first chapter of the book deals mainly with methods of solution of one-dimensional inverse problems. The second chapter focuses on scalar inverse problems of wave propagation in a layered medium. In the final chapter inverse problems for elasticity equations in stratified media and acoustic equations for moving media are given.

Book Synopsis Systems with Persistent Memory by : Luciano Pandolfi
Download or read book Systems with Persistent Memory written by Luciano Pandolfi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text addresses systems with persistent memory that are common mathematical models used in the study of viscoelasticity and thermodynamics with memory. In particular, this class of systems is used to model non-Fickian diffusion in the presence of complex molecular structures. Hence, it has wide applications in biology. The book focuses on the properties and controllability of the archetypal heat and wave equations with memory and introduces the dynamic approach to identification problems and the basic techniques used in the study of stability. The book presents several approaches currently used to study systems with persistent memory: Volterra equation in Hilbert spaces, Laplace transform techniques and semigroup methods. The text is intended for a diverse audience in applied mathematics and engineering and it can be used in PhD courses. Readers are recommended to have a background in the elements of functional analysis. Topics of functional analysis which younger readers may need to familiarize with are presented in the book.

The first part "Basic Concepts" briefly introduces the language of set theory and concepts of abstract, linear and multilinear algebra. Also introduced are the language of topology and fundamental concepts of calculus: the limit, the differential, and the integral. A special section is devoted to analysis on manifolds. The second part "Operators" describes the most important function spaces and operator classes for both linear and nonlinear operators. Different kinds of generalized functions and their transformations are considered. Elements of the theory of linear operators are presented. Spectral theory is given a special focus. The third part "Ill-Posed Problems" is devoted to problems of mathematical physics, integral and operator equations, evolution equations and problems of integral geometry. It also deals with problems of analytic continuation. Detailed coverage of the subjects and numerous examples and exercises make it possible to use the book as a textbook on some areas of calculus and functional analysis. It can also be used as a reference textbook because of the extensive scope and detailed references with comments.

Book Synopsis Well-posed, Ill-posed, and Intermediate Problems with Applications by : Petrov Yuri P.
Download or read book Well-posed, Ill-posed, and Intermediate Problems with Applications written by Petrov Yuri P. and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with one of the key problems in applied mathematics, namely the investigation into and providing for solution stability in solving equations with due allowance for inaccuracies in set initial data, parameters and coefficients of a mathematical model for an object under study, instrumental function, initial conditions, etc., and also with allowance for miscalculations, including roundoff errors. Until recently, all problems in mathematics, physics and engineering were divided into two classes: well-posed problems and ill-posed problems. The authors introduce a third class of problems: intermediate ones, which are problems that change their property of being well- or ill-posed on equivalent transformations of governing equations, and also problems that display the property of being either well- or ill-posed depending on the type of the functional space used. The book is divided into two parts: Part one deals with general properties of all three classes of mathematical, physical and engineering problems with approaches to solve them; Part two deals with several stable models for solving inverse ill-posed problems, illustrated with numerical examples.
