Since most children with these difficulties are expected to function in ordinary schools and nurseries it is important that parents, teachers and practitioners have a broad understanding of the issues. Language and communication problems typically fall under the umbrella terms 'language disability, 'language delay', or 'language difficulties. They can range from an occasional difficulty with certain sounds to an inability to communicate using spoken language. These problems can occur in isolation or be associated with a range of special needs such as hearing loss, visual impairment or learning disabilities. This is the first introductory text to outline the difficulties experienced by children and link these to issues surrounding multidisciplinary assessment, intervention and service provision. Children's Language and Communication Difficulties offers professionals and parents an up-to-date account of: -the developmental language problems that children experience -the provision available to meet the child's needs the long term impact of language difficulties The authors examine the problems of identification and diagnosis, and explore the range of physical and cognitive disabilities associated with language problems. They have also looked closely at alternative forms of communication and have provided the reader with discussion and evaluation of recently developed intervention techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the "Educating Gifted and Talented Students" series, the booklet offers the teacher guidelines for facilitating communication abilities in gifted children. Following an introduction, a first chapter lists characteristics of students gifted in speech communication and leadership. The essence of giftedness in speech communication and leadership is seen to be the capacity for effective flexibility. Additional characteristics of leadership and speech communication abilities are mentioned in a second chapter and three methods (including showing ambiguous pictures to students and asking them to describe what they see portrayed) for identifying leadership and communication abilities are outlined. A final chapter, which makes up the bulk of the booklet, describes strategies for teaching oral communication. A purposes section discusses the general directions or goals for communication instruction aimed at the gifted. The section on practices suggests methods for achieving those goals, methods especially applicable for gifted students. A programs section deals with integrating the suggested methods into the classroom setting. Among procedures considered are experiential learning, individualized learning, independent study projects, and internships. Appendixes include information on introspection activities, teacher/student agreement on course ground rules, a troubleshooting checklist, a leader's brief, and steps for program evaluation. (SBH)

First, to provide the most up-to-date and cost effective services possible for families with autistic or similar language impaired children; second, to conduct research aimed toward the better under standing of such devastating disorders; and third, to provide training for the professionals needed to pursue these goals. One element in achieving these aims is to hold annual conferences on topics of special importance to the under standing and treatment of autism and similar disorders. In addition to training professionals and parents on the most recent de velopments in each conference topic, we are publishing a series, Current Issues in Autism, based on these conferences. These books are not, however, simply the published proceedings of the conference papers. Instead, some chapters are expanded conference presentations, whereas others come from national and in ternational experts whose work is beyond the scope of the conference, but es sential in our attempt at comprehensive coverage of the conference theme. These volumes are intended to provide the most current knowledge and profes sional practice available to us at the time.

Book excerpt: Conversation is the very heart of schooling and pedagogy. In early education, oral language development is particularly significant for interactions, social relationships, and friendships, and for building a sense of belonging. Educators help children develop oral language skills both directly through linguistic interaction with them and indirectly by creating an environment, which is rich in learning stimuli. This chapter aims to establish how educators manage oral language in preschool classrooms and how the implementation of specific approaches has more positive results than that of others. References are made to theoretical approaches of sociolinguistics and ethnography of communication. In this research, kindergarten teachers engage pupils in discussions on the topic of 'Tolerance'. The activities were recorded and the content analyzed according to the qualitative content analysis of speech and communication. The analysis identified constructive interventions with positive results, along with less effective ones, which proved discouraging for children. We suggest that children in early childhood construct meaning and learn in accordance with the ways in which adults manage orality.

Book excerpt: Common Core State Standards and the Speech-Language Pathologist: Standards-Based Intervention for Special Populations is a tool for the analysis of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the development of interventions to meet student-specific needs. The CCSS is an education initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should understand in English language arts and mathematics by the end of each grade. The initiative seeks to establish consistent education standards across the United States and ensure that graduating students are prepared to enter college or the workforce. As of 2015, forty-three states had adopted the CCSS. With the implementation of the CCSS, it is critical that speech-language pathologists collaborate with educators to enable the success of students with communication disorders as well as English language learners. This text offers a practical approach for application of the CCSS with a parallel analysis of children's strengths and needs to create a template for intervention. It addresses strategies to facilitate the success of students in accessing and achieving the expectations of the general curriculum, with a focus on students with communication disorders, hearing loss, vision loss, deaf-blindness, specific learning disabilities, autism, multiple disabilities, and English language learners. Key features include: Background and implications of the CCSSChapters written by experts in the fieldTools for analysis of the language expectations of the CCSS and a framework for aligning intervention (both direct and classroom-based) with the CCSS for students at elementary and secondary levelsCollaboration strategies to facilitate success in the classroomMultiple case studies Common Core State Standards and the Speech-Language Pathologist is a must-have resource for any speech-language pathologist working with children, as well as their education and administration partners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.
