Book Synopsis L'idealismo attuale di Giovanni Gentile by : Vincenzo La Via
Download or read book L'idealismo attuale di Giovanni Gentile written by Vincenzo La Via and published by Mimesis. This book was released on 2021-10-07T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 1997-09-04 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by Seamus Heaney as `one of the great publishing events of the decade', The Collected Letters of W. B. Yeats is redefining the territory of modern literary history. Covering a formative period in Yeats's political career, and the beginning of his theatrical involvement, Volume II (1896-1900) is indispensable to anyone interested in modern poetry, Irish drama, and cultural history. Letter by letter Yeat's private concerns, artistic quarrels and exhausting political life are revealed. Rich and readable notes provide a narrative of these years, explaining allusions, and setting the correspondence in its cultural and political contexts, as well as relating it to the emergence of Yeats's canon.

Book Synopsis Builders of My Soul by : Brian Arkins
Download or read book Builders of My Soul written by Brian Arkins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1990 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Yeats, as well as to Eliot, Pound, Joyce, and other major writers, as Erich Auerbach put it in Mimesis, "Antiquity means liberation and a broadening of horizons, not in any sense a new limitation or servitude." That is why Greco-Roman themes can be endlessly stimulating, why Yeats could call the Greek and Roman writers "the builders of my soul." Brian Arkin's thematic consideration of Yeat's subject matter under philosophy, myth, religion, history, literature, visual art, and Byzantium, allows us to see coherently how Yeats exploited this material and how, especially in his middle and later periods, he transformed and metamorphosed subject matter from Homer, Phidias, Plato, Plotinus, and Sophocles, and from the myths of Dionysus, Helen of Troy, Leda, and Zeus, to exemplify his central preoccupations. Irish Literary Studies Series No. 32.

Book Synopsis The Reception of W. B. Yeats in Europe by : Klaus Peter Jochum
Download or read book The Reception of W. B. Yeats in Europe written by Klaus Peter Jochum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual and cultural impact of British and Irish writers cannot be assessed without reference to their reception in European countries. These essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record the ways in which W. B. Yeats has been translated, evaluated and emulated in different national and linguistic areas of continental Europe. There is a remarkable split between the often politicized reception in Eastern European countries but also Spain on the one hand, and the more sober scholarly response in Western Europe on the other. Yeats's Irishness and the pre-eminence of his lyrical work have posed continuous challenges. Three further essays describe the widely divergent reactions to Yeats in his native Ireland, during his lifetime and up to the most recent years.

Book excerpt: I At the end of the ’eighties my father and mother, my brother and sisters and myself, all newly arrived from Dublin, were settled in Bedford Park in a red-brick house with several mantelpieces of wood, copied from marble mantelpieces designed by the brothers Adam, a balcony and a little garden shadowed by a great horse-chestnut tree. Years before we had lived there, when the crooked ostentatiously picturesque streets with great trees casting great shadows had been a new enthusiasm: the Pre-Raphaelite movement at last affecting life. But now exaggerated criticism had taken the place of enthusiasm, the tiled roofs, the first in modern London, were said to leak, which they did not, and the drains to be bad, though that was no longer true; and I imagine that houses were cheap. I remember feeling disappointed because the co-operative stores, with their little seventeenth century panes, had lost the romance they had when I had passed them still unfinished on my way to school; and because the public house, called The Tabard after Chaucer’s Inn, was so plainly a common public house; and because the great sign of a trumpeter designed by Rooke, the Pre-Raphaelite artist, had been freshened by some inferior hand. The big red-brick church had never pleased me, and I was accustomed, when I saw the wooden balustrade that ran along the slanting edge of the roof where nobody ever walked or could walk, to remember the opinion of some architect friend of my father’s, that it had been put there to keep the birds from falling off. Still, however, it had some village characters and helped us to feel not wholly lost in the metropolis. I no longer went to church as a regular habit, but go I sometimes did, for one Sunday morning I saw these words painted on a board in the porch: “The congregation are requested to kneel during prayers; the kneelers are afterwards to be hung upon pegs provided for the purpose.” In front of every seat hung a little cushion and these cushions were called “kneelers.” Presently the joke ran through the community, where there were many artists who considered religion at best an unimportant accessory to good architecture and who disliked that particular church.
