The Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana (missoula) canvassed pri mary wood processing plants to collect the data for this bulletin (tables 1 through 19; and table 21, Resi dent mills and nonlocal mills (outside Utah) that consumed industrial roundwood originating in Utah were contacted. Mill operators were asked to supply information about the timber they received during 1992. This information included the volume, species, product type, ownership and county of origin of tim ber, and an estimate of mill residue volume by type. Table 22 contains the factors used to convert log volumes reported by mills in board feet, Scribner rule, and other units of measure into the standard Forest Survey units of measure, cubic feet and board feet, International inch rule. These plants, sawmills, and yards were identified from the Directory of Arizona Wood Manufacturers, updated by the Forestry Division, Arizona State Land Department. In addition to canvassing the resident mills, those firms outside Arizona, but which were consuming roundwood that originated within the State, were also contacted. In both cases, mill operators were asked to supply information about the roundwood material used by them during 1984. This information included ownership and county of origin of roundwood consumed, species, type of product, and an estimate of residue produced by type. Appendix I includes conversion factors used in this report, and appendix II is a list of the participating primary wood processors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idaho Lumber Production, 1956 Douglas-fir led all species with a cut of nearly 399 million board feet, or about one-quarter of Idaho's total. The true firs (grand, white, and al pine), with 305 million board feet, were practically tied with ponderosa pine (304 million board feet) for second place, each making up 19 percent of all lumber produced. Engelmann spruce (14 percent) and western white pine (12 percent) occupied fourth and fifth places, respectively. By far the greatest part of Idaho's lumber was cut by mills having ah nual capacities for 10 million board feet or more. These large mills produced million board feet or more than 72 percent of the State total. Mills with yearly production of 5 to 10 million board feet sawed 12 percent, and those in the l to 5 million class sawed 13 percent, leaving slightly more than 2 percent of the total for mills having smaller outputs.
