Download or read book Grammar Lessons written by Michele Morano and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the thirteen personal essays in Grammar Lessons, Michele Morano connects the rules of grammar to the stories we tell to help us understand our worlds. Living and traveling in Spain during a year of teaching English to university students, she learned to translate and interpret her past and present worlds—to study the surprising moments of communication—as a way to make sense of language and meaning, longing and memory. Morano focuses first on her year of living in Oviedo, in the early 1990s, a time spent immersing herself in a new culture and language while working through the relationship she had left behind with an emotionally dependent and suicidal man. Next, after subsequent trips to Spain, she explores the ways that travel sparks us to reconsider our personal histories in the context of larger historical legacies. Finally, she turns to the aftereffects of travel, to the constant negotiations involved in retelling and understanding the stories of our lives. Throughout she details one woman’s journey through vocabulary and verb tense toward a greater sense of her place in the world. Grammar Lessons illustrates the difficulty and delight, humor and humility of living in a new language and of carrying that pivotal experience forward. Michele Morano’s beautifully constructed essays reveal the many grammars and many voices that we collect, and learn from, as we travel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As her weak and battered body lay paralyzed on the mattress in her master bedroom, Michelle's boyfriend's blood dripped from the lacerations on his hands onto her bruised and mangled face. Using what little energy she had left, she broke free from his grasp and fell to her knees, begging God to forgive Paul for what he was doing and to make him stop. Paul simply laughed and replied, "God isn't going to help you now." In that instant, Michelle saw her life flash before her eyes and wondered how she got there...again. But I Love Him is a painful yet inspirational true story of a strong, independent woman caught in the horrifying cycle of domestic violence and how she got out. In this book, Michelle shares the details of her struggle with genuine honesty, taking the reader on a twisted journey of love, pain and unyielding brutality that eventually leads...to peace. Mixing statistics, research and resource with her own account, she shows just how far someone in her situation can sink, why it happens and how they can always pick themselves back up. Those who hear Michelle's story will walk away with a newfound understanding about the horrors of domestic violence, how to escape and how to build a new, healthier life. Star of two major television shows, five-time husband, and reality show star, Lamas has been tabloid fodder for decades. Fans can easily believe they have seen every side of Lamas. But the truth is far more interesting—and surprising. Son of film stars Fernando Lamas and Arlene Dahl, and stepson of swimmer and actress Esther Williams, Lorenzo was born into Hollywood royalty. But his path was not easy. Overweight and aimless as a child, he found it hard to live up to the expectations of his famous father, whose exploits made him the inspiration for the "most interesting man in the world." Despite his father's early discouragement, he pursued acting, starring in Falcon Crest and Renegade. In Renegade at Heart, the Emmy– and Golden Globe–nominated actor pulls back the curtain to share his startling and explosive story—the money and notoriety, the fights and falling outs, his years of battling abandonment and attachment issues after his parents' divorce, his epic romances and tabloid—making marriages to his four ex-wives. Featuring 50 rare, never-before-shared family and personal photographs from his private collection, Renegade at Heart is everything Lamas's millions of fans have been waiting for—the unvarnished truth and his side of his remarkable journey and fully fleshed rumination of the highs and lows of an extraordinary life and survival of an extraordinary man and actor.
Download or read book A Hero's Journey written by Chris Dooley and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Hero’s Journey Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp is a compiled history of the Olympia Sports Camp in Huntsville, Ontario, through the lens of its founder and inspiration, Dave Grace, the hero of the book’s title. The hero’s journey of the title is Dave Grace’s adaptation of the writings and teaching of philosopher Joseph Campbell. The basic tenet of the Dave Grace’s hero’s journey is that heroes all go through a 12-step journey—from their own comfort zone to the unknown and all its challenges—to a new normal where the hero bestows knowledge learned on others in order to help them on their journey. Dave Grace’s foundational belief is that we are all heroes on our own path and who we become on our journey is more important than the accomplishments we achieve. A Hero’s Journey chronicles the people and places that make up the history of the camp, while also serving as an inspirational guidebook for readers to each become the hero of their own journey. This book also examines the history of the land on which the camp has been built, from its Indigenous origins to the European settlement of the 1800s, and to the use of the land by the Norwegian Air Force during World War II. The book takes readers on a journey through the various stages related to the development of the camp, first established in 1974. The book is built on a collection of stories related to mentorship, sports psychology, and community building, as well as interviews of past campers, coaches, and others with a longtime association with Olympia. With this book, author Chris Dooley honours Dave Grace and the many others who have been integral to the history of the camp and its land.
Book Synopsis theMystery.doc by : Matthew McIntosh
Download or read book theMystery.doc written by Matthew McIntosh and published by Grove Atlantic. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 1256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A vast, beguiling...postmodern novel of ideas, misread intentions, and robots, told in words, pictures, symbols, and even blank pages” by the author of Well (Kirkus). Rooted in the western United States in the decade after 9/11, Matthew McIntosh’s epic and elliptical novel follows a young writer and his wife as he attempts to write the follow-up to his first novel. He desperately searches for a form that will express the world as it has become, even as it continually shifts all around him. Pop-up ads, search results, web chats, snippets of conversation, lines of code, and film and television stills mix with alchemical manuscripts, classical works of literature—and the story of a man who wakes up one morning having lost his memory. His only clue to his own identity is a single blank document on his computer called theMystery.doc. From text messages to The Divine Comedy, first love to artificial intelligence, the book explores what makes us human—the stories we tell, the memories we hold on to, the memories we lose—and the relationships that give our lives meaning. Part love story, part memoir, part documentary, part existential whodunit, theMystery.doc is a modern epic about the quest to find something lasting in a world where everything—and everyone—is in danger of slipping away. “McIntosh is a slacker Proust, writing about the underclass of Spokane rather than the upper classes of Paris as he attempts to convert memories and experience into art...a remarkable achievement.”—Steven Moore, Washington Post

Book excerpt: Shawn Henning's new book is a powerful and overwhelming tribute and legacy to Michael Jackson. In one book, he's collected love letters, reflections, eulogies, poems, essays and drawings from people throughout the world who have a special appreciation for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I was particularly impressed at the diversity of material, from so many different countries and cultures ndash; all of it heartfelt and illuminating. In We Love You More, we learn about the many different ways that Michael Jackson affected people from all walks of life. The participants talk about how Michael's music, creativity and pubic example affected their lives and helped them to be better people. The contributions are a wonderful cathartic output to help to come to terms with the loss of Michael's huge talent. They will not only comfort those who have written them, but those who read them. People will learn about the experiences they have in common, with people throughout the world, who followed Michael's career, his music, his good deeds and the example he set for this generation and generations to come. The book will also be of comfort to Michael's own family. They will see that the spirit of Michael will continue in people everywhere and in many ways and for many reasons. It's also fascinating to learn what people have to say about different songs and what they meant to their lives. I'm impressed by the diverse elements in the book... from eulogies, to memories to poems and beautiful drawings and paintings and even photo montages at the end. Mr. Henning... you've done a wonderful service to the Michael Jackson fan community and I commend you. Sincerely yours, Larry Nimmer
