Book excerpt: I Have a Weakness for a Touch of Red is a selection of essays on the art and architecture of Portugal by Yehuda Safran, who has been a professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University and Pratt Institute, as well as the director of Potlach journal. Safran, who has previously written books on Adolf Loos, Mies van der Rohe, Anthony Gormley and Anish Kapoor, is not himself Portuguese; he writes here from the perspective of a traveler, enamored with the work of major architects Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura and artist Pedro Cabrita Reis, among others. In an interview with the Portuguese website Virose, Safran said of Siza: "there is always a Portuguese accent to it, but he is really addressing universal architectural issues. The great poet writes normally in his own language."

Book excerpt: "Blackie and Red, a pair of ten-year-old orphans, have a common goal. They want to be able to fight each other to the finish and at last prove who is the better man. This constant feuding has caused them much grief at the orphanage, so they decide to run away. They are rescued from the wild (and each other) by Andy Connell. Connell has seen the two boys fight. From the beginning he sees that Blackie is not hindered by a sense of fair play; however, Red is by nature honest and open. Connell is a prospector who has not yet found his fortune; his greatest challenge is in getting his wife to accept the young orphans. Brand continues to develop this story over the years as the boys grow to men and Andy Connell strikes the ''mother lode'' he has sought for so long."--Fantasticfiction.com

Book excerpt: BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A novel that follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

With the help of Lady Luck, the two meet. "Money. Bright lights. Sex." Jennifer is made an offer: sell her virginity to the highest bidder and transform into one of Finnley's girls. But she finds herself weak for him, and doesn't fully realize what she's agreed to until it's too late. Will she rise to the challenge and play by the rules in a land where money is king and love is prohibited? Or will she lose herself and values in the attempt? 'Weak for Him' is not considered a "dark" read, but does have unlady-like language, adult subject matter, and s-e-x-ual situations.

Book excerpt: The Red and the Black - Stendhal - Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black) is a historical psychological novel in two volumes by Stendhal, published in 1830. It chronicles the attempts of a provincial young man to rise socially beyond his modest upbringing through a combination of talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy. He ultimately allows his passions to betray him. The novel's full title, Le Rouge et le Noir: Chronique du XIXe siècle (The Red and the Black: A Chronicle of the 19th Century), indicates its twofold literary purpose as both a psychological portrait of the romantic protagonist, Julien Sorel, and an analytic, sociological satire of the French social order under the Bourbon Restoration (1814–30). In English, Le Rouge et le Noir is variously translated as Red and Black, Scarlet and Black, and The Red and the Black, without the subtitle. The title is taken to refer to the tension between the clerical (black) and secular (red) interests of the protagonist. But it could also refer to the then-popular card game "rouge et noir," with the card game being the narratological leitmotiv of a novel in which chance and luck determine the fate of the main character. There are other interpretations as well. Le Rouge et le Noir is the Bildungsroman of Julien Sorel, the intelligent and ambitious protagonist. He comes from a poor family[1] and fails to understand much about the ways of the world he sets out to conquer. He harbours many romantic illusions, but becomes mostly a pawn in the political machinations of the ruthless and influential people about him. The adventures of the hero satirize early 19th-century French society, accusing the aristocracy and Catholic clergy of being hypocritical and materialistic, foretelling the radical changes that will soon depose them from their leading roles in French society.

Book excerpt: He would awaken from the dream fearing he may go mad. It was horribly realistic; as realistic as the prison bars, the tramp of heavy feet in the clanging corridors, the rattle of keys in distant locks. Was he a criminal? Perhaps. George Cathcart stood face to face with the certainty of a long term of penal servitude. He claimed to be a victim of circumstances. He was charged with conspiring with Seth Powell, who'd since died in mysterious circumstances, to cast away the yacht Lone Star on the high seas. Would anyone every believe his story?

Book excerpt: Elizabeth lives every day thinking that twenty years ago, she could've prevented AI from upending society. But her lack of experience, and a messy affair, sent her spiralling out of government and into seclusion. Her ex-husband Mike now works at HumanTouch, the last firm in London doing graphic design by hand. He rolls his eyes at anti-automation protests, but worries his favourite shows and his online romances are both being written by algorithms. Across town, Gemma sleepwalks through life as a music industry executive, a bottle in one hand and hook-up apps in another, her fiftieth birthday just around the corner. Few care for artisanal music anymore, fewer still could afford it. With unemployment punishable by exile to a work camp, and the threat of losing their livelihoods ever-growing, Elizabeth, Mike and Gemma each struggle to find their own way back to something that resembles happiness—or even just humanity.

He's a reclusive writer whose imagination creates chilling horror novels. She's a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids' puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill his characters with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill an audience with laughs. But she's not laughing now. Annie Hewitt has arrived on Peregrine Island in the middle of a snowstorm and at the end of her resources. She's broke, dispirited, but not quite ready to give up. Her red suitcases hold the puppets she uses to make her living: sensible Dilly, spunky Scamp, and Leo, the baddest of bad guys. Her puppets, the romantic novels she loves, and a little bit of courage are all she has left. Annie couldn't be more ill prepared for what she finds when she reaches Moonraker Cottage or for the man who dwells in Harp House, the mysterious mansion that hovers above the cottage. When she was a teenager, he betrayed her in a way she can never forget or forgive. Now they're trapped together on a frozen island along with a lonely widow, a mute little girl, and townspeople who don't know how to mind their own business. Is he the villain she remembers, or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes. It's going to be a long, hot winter.
