Book excerpt: Discover the essential thinking tools you’ve been missing with The Great Mental Models series by Shane Parrish, New York Times bestselling author and the mind behind the acclaimed Farnam Street blog and “The Knowledge Project” podcast. This first book in the series is your guide to learning the crucial thinking tools nobody ever taught you. Time and time again, great thinkers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have credited their success to mental models–representations of how something works that can scale onto other fields. Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back. The Great Mental Models: Volume 1, General Thinking Concepts shows you how making a few tiny changes in the way you think can deliver big results. Drawing on examples from history, business, art, and science, this book details nine of the most versatile, all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making and productivity. This book will teach you how to: Avoid blind spots when looking at problems. Find non-obvious solutions. Anticipate and achieve desired outcomes. Play to your strengths, avoid your weaknesses, … and more. The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

Book excerpt: Born as bombs and mortar tore through her native country and raised with the quiet example of strength and honor from her parents, this 13 year old girl became the designated head of her family at the death of her beloved father. Driven to succeed and seeing America as her path to the success her father wanted for her, she emigrated from Korea to the United States in her late teens. As she finds ways to blend her Korean values of family and responsibility with American customs and values, her belief in herself never waivers. In Korea successful people are business owners so she too must become a business owner in her new country. Becoming a successful business owner in a small mid-western town is not easy; expanding that business to become the store of choice for high-end builders and buyers in a nearby city across state lines is even more impressive. As you read her story you'll find a fascinating mix of family loyalties and responsibilities, absolute respect for hard work, and the strength of character to set the example for the next generation in her family. Book excerpt: The Prettiest is an incisive, empowering novel by Brigit Young about standing up for yourself and those around you. “All middle school girls AND boys (especially boys!) should read this book.” —Alan Gratz, New York Times–bestselling author of Refugee THE PRETTIEST: It’s the last thing Eve Hoffmann expected to be, the only thing Sophie Kane wants to be, and something Nessa Flores-Brady knows she’ll never be . . . until a list appears online, ranking the top fifty prettiest girls in the eighth grade. Eve, ranked number one, can't ignore how everyone is suddenly talking about her looks—and her body. Sophie, always popular and put together, feels lower than ever when she's bullied for being number two. Nessa isn't on the list at all, but she doesn't care. Or does she? Eve, Nessa, and Sophie are determined to get justice—or at least revenge. But as these unlikely vigilantes become fiercely loyal friends, they discover that the real triumph isn't the takedown. It's the power that comes from lifting one another up. A Chicago Public Library Best Book of 2020

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves deep into the hidden population of former gang members who share their positive and negative experiences of being gang members. Their stories of violence, hopelessness, despair, and loneliness also offer a seed of hope – they contain the building blocks for prevention. By understanding why they each turned to gangs, how they turned to gangs, and what went wrong for some along their pathways during childhood, as well as how and why they chose to leave the gang lifestyle, we can begin to put the pieces together and understand tools for gang prevention. Schools are in the unique position to become an oasis or a safe haven for a child in a world that does not otherwise feel safe to them. School staff members can step in and become consistent people in a child’s life. They can help to identify at-risk youth and intervene, facilitating a change in path away from gang membership. This book discusses how schools and staff can be instrumental in gang prevention and outlines warning signs and risk and protective factors for gang involvement. It also talks about components of gang prevention programs in schools. Additional topics explored include: Theories of Gang Involvement Lack of Family Consistency: Relating Attachment Theory with Gang Involvement “Brotherhood, Sisterhood, Unity:" Gangs as Replacement Family "No Other Option:" The Role of Social Environment "Death, Jail, or a Turnaround:" Making the Decision to Disengage A Piece About Trauma-Informed Practice Authored by a school social worker who has an insider's perspective on working in a school, Gang Prevention in Schools is a useful resource that gives a humanistic view of former gang members. The book will engage readers in the fields of psychology, social work, education and educational administration, and criminal justice, as well as have potential appeal to a lay audience due to the richness of the stories and interviews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although everybody in the world is singing about love, dream, money, and happiness, ironically, not many people know what these things really are. I became an artist for my dream, which was to do something for the environment, and I came to New York City for the dream. But ironically, I realized that I didnt even know what the environment really was before I came to New York City. I have done a nonprofit sign campaign for the environment in Times Square in the fall of 2011 and spring of 2014. I saw and met many people who were from all over the world. The people and New York City have given me some answers in life. To do something for the environment, I have also picked up a lot of cigarette butts that no one really cared about on the streets of New York City. Then I put the thrown cigarette butts into many different glass jars. I have slowly realized that the most important thing for the environment was happinessbecause happiness is the primary reason for all lives. There are many different reasons for each of our lives, but all the reasons lean to one point. That is happiness. And unhappiness is the third pollution source that makes people careless with everything. No one can well take care of other things if the persons level of happiness is too low. We have to be happy first no matter what. To be happy, we need to know what happiness really is, as well as the other very important things in life. These eight things are the answers that Ive learned from my life and from New York City.

I have in my arms both ways. I can see my Tokelau way, it’s good. I can see the papalagi way, it’s good. I don’t want to put one down, and lift the other one up, or put the other one down and lift that one up. I can carry them both. Novena Petelo Immigrant women bring to New Zealand rich experiences of lives spent in other cultures. But their stories are rarely told. In this book ten women, who have come to New Zealand through three decades from the 1960s, speak in depth about growing up in their first countries, and their lives in New Zealand. They talk about childhood, marriage, discrimination, language, their aspirations for their children, and the role of women in their first culture and in New Zealand. They also, often poignantly, point to what they cannot speak about. The ten women come from India, the Philippines, Tonga, Tokelau Islands, Chile, Iran, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Vietnam and Laos. With portraits by Gil Hanly.
