Book excerpt: This report summarizes the verification and calibration of the new Mach 7 Thermal Structural Facility located at the White Oak, Maryland, site of the Dahlgren Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. This effort was in support of the development of a thermal structural ground testing capability for interceptor seeker windows and radomes. The new facility is located in the Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 complex and uses common gas supply and vacuum source hardware. Test included the initial facility operation as well as a detailed calibration at three specific design points. Calibration data were collected using a Pitot-probe rake and a blunt sphere cone, each mounted at multiple locations in the test cell to fully characterize the test environment. The Thermal Structural Facility achieves Mach 7 flow conditions with freestream pressures and temperatures equivalent to ambient pressures and temperatures for altitudes between 38,000 and 67,000 ft (11.5 and 20.5 km) for test times up to 5 sec. This ground test facility provides the capability necessary to test full- scale intercepter seeker windows in a true aero-thermal environment without the need for scaling.

This effort was sponsored by the National Aerospace Plane Joint Program Office (NASP JPO). Free stream flow field parameter distributions were obtained for both the Mach 10 and 14 nozzles spanning the Reynolds number range. A total of four Mach 10, and ten Mach 14 runs were performed during this test program. The test period was 7 to 22 May 1991. Results from this test entry were combined with previous test data in the final analysis. Data from the test reveal that high quality uniform flow exists and that deviations in core flow field parameters are comparable with the calibration data taken in the past. Free stream flow field measurements were obtained for the Mach 8 nozzle, covering a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The calibration included running very low Reynolds numbers, not previously calibrated at Mach 8, as well as running at the current maximum supply conditions for Mach 8. The test period was 18 to 23 December 1992, with a total of five runs. Results from this test entry were combined with previous Mach 8 calibration data in the final analysis. Previous calibration data were taken when Mach 8 was originally brought on-line in December of 1988. The maximum supply conditions were lower during the original calibration than are currently available. However, data from this most recent calibration reveal that high quality uniform flow still exists and that deviations in core flow field parameters are comparable with other Tunnel 9 calibration data taken to date. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of the high Mach Number Development program performed at the White Oak, Maryland site of the Dahlgren Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. The goal of this program was to expand the capabilities of the Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel Number 9 (Tunnel 9) to include operation at Mach 18. The constraints of this program involved using the existing Mach 14 setup with as little modification as necessary. There were two major areas of interest for this program, the heater and the nozzle. The required supply temperature for Mach 18 operation is above the current capabilities of the Tunnel 9 Mach 14 heater. Utilizing supercooled flow conditions lowered the required supply temperature to within the Mach 14 heater capability. The current Mach 14 nozzle was used and the throat section was replaced with a new hardware set designed to achieve the correct nozzle throat-to-exit area ratio to obtain the higher Mach number Fortyone runs were carried out in Tunnel 9 in support of this program. The Mach number capability in Tunnel 9 has been extended to Mach 16.5. For this condition the flow has a 30-inch test core with Pitot pressure deviations of-1.1% to + 1.3% and 3.5 seconds of good run time. A Mach 18 capability has also been investigated. Research efforts to achieve acceptable Mach 18 conditions are continuing.

Book excerpt: A small, low-density, hypervelocity, continuous wind tunnel operating at total temperatures from 2000 to 4000 K is described, and initial experiments designed to determine the characteristics of the flow are discussed. Effects of low Reynolds numbers on impact-pressure probes and static-pressure probes are shown. Preliminary work with a probe for measuring local mass-flow rate is outlined, and results are shown to be in agreement with impact and static pressure measurements. Axial and transverse surveys of flow in the nozzle are presented to illustrate the extent of boundary-layer growth and the useable core of flow. A diffuser is proved to be advantageous, even though very low Reynolds numbers are typical of the tunnel. A comparison of data on drag of spheres, including measurements from the new wind tunnel, is presented. (Author).

Facility nozzles were calibrated over a range of stagnation pressure and temperature from 140 to 700 newtons per square centimeter and 1100 to 1750 K. The Reynolds number varied from 1.77 million to 7.44 million per meter. Mach numbers in the inviscid core of the three nozzles were 5.17 plus or minus 0.03, 6.05 plus or minus 0.02, and 7.25 plus or minus 0.08. Usable core diameters at the nozzle exit plane varied from 69 to 86 centimeters. True simulation with these performance capabilities and the test section size presently make this a unique operating facility.
