Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn-Tunes Sung in the Church of the United Brethren I have therefore never deviated from the original (though Tome of our congregauons in England have adopted a few peculiarities) with a view that this pleafing uniformity may likewife be ef'tablifhed amongfl us. - The introduction of new Tunes is however by no means excluded. Some metres have the advantage of a variety of Tunes, adapted to the femfe of the hymns for which they were compofed and it would be well, if every metre had the fame. If any able Compofer therefore, would furniih this variety, a valu able and ufeful appendix to the prefent collection might be formed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unity Hymns and Chorals With Service Elements Many churches will, of course, prefer a wider range both of hymns and tunes. But familiarity and association have much to do with hymn-love and tune-use; and few congregations use more than three hundred hymns, or can sing more than one hundred tunes with success and enjoyment. Our book is made for the little church rather than the large, and for the singing congregation rather than the choir; and in providing our small number of hymns and tunes, our aim has been to select such as will serve nearly every practical purpose for which a church-book is used, and also such as already have, or are likely to acquire, enduring love among us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication by John Wesley of the "Foundery" Collection (1742) marked the establishment of standards for tunes suited to Methodist hymn singing. Early Methodist hymn books in the United States contained words only, but they were cross-referenced with a leader's tune book, beginning with David's Companion (1808). "With One Heart and One Voice" reviews the trends surrounding the styles of tunes selected and analyzes the changes in shape and text for the most frequently used tunes in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Seventy six "core repertory" tunes are analyzed based upon their repeated appearances in most of the tune books published between 1808 and 1878, at which point Methodists finally obtained a hymnal with both words and music, after a half century of experimentation with tune selection. The conclusions reached in this work will allow scholars, hymnologists, and hymn singers to explore the social and musicological influences on hymn tune writing, how long it took for texts to acquire a "fixed tune," how tastes in hymn tunes change ever so slowly, and how many delightful tunes found in the core repertory of the 19th century have been dropped from today's repertoire.

Book excerpt: In Sarah Anna Glover: Nineteenth Century Music Education Pioneer, Jane Southcott explores the life and pedagogy of Sarah Anna Glover, the female music education pioneer of congregational singing (psalmody) and singing in nineteenth-century schools. Glover devoted her life to the creation and propagation of a way of teaching class music that was meticulously devised, musically rigorous, and successfully promulgated. Southcott analyzes Glover’s methods, history, and memory, and works to correct inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have emerged since Glover’s death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and Sunday School Hymnal: A Collection of Hymns and Sacred Songs, Appropriate for Church Services, Sunday Schools and General Devotional Exercises The service of song claims a very important place in all our devotional exercises. The Lord has in all ages encouraged His people to rejoice and sing praises to His holy name. In singing the soul gives expression of its devotion to God, and makes known its deep struggles and great needs. The service of song also leads to spiritual develop ment and unity among the believers. Among the pleasures and joys of heaven will be the glorious song service of the redeemed: And they sang a new song - saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wis dom and strength and honor and glory and blessing. In order to be prepared to join in the songs of the redeemed, our hearts and souls need to be set in tune by the hand that sets in tune every vocal and spiritual chord in all the universe. This is effected by following the divine instruction to teach and admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts unto the Lord. In compiling the Church and Sunday School Hymnal, the committees have endeavored to select and adopt only such hymns as tend to promote true devotion and a deeper work of grace in the hearts Of all who engage in the service of song. The hymns and songs selected cover a wide range of subject matter suitable for all occasions in religious worship, both in the church and home. All the best Old hymns and tunes sung by our sainted fathers and mothers, and which have left their sacred memories and influence upon the present generation, have been retained; many newer hymns of unquestionable worth secured at considerable cost, also a number of valuable new hymns written especially for this work, constitute a collection of hymns and tunes peculiarly adapted to the needs of the various lines of church work. Great care has been taken in selecting tunes to express the sentiment of the words, and such as are best suited to congregational singing. Care has also been exercised in classifying the hymns under heads appropriate for the various occasions of worship, and any class can be readily found by referring to the topical index. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Hymns and Tunes: For the Sunday-School, the Congregation, and the Home The Tunes are such as seemed, from their familiarity, or their easy melody, or their congregational character, best suited for the purpose intended. Most of the good congregational tunes will be found here; both because it is desirable that the children should early learn these tunes, that they may afterwards sing them in the congregation, and because the book is thereby rendered available for congregational use; for which also a considerable number of the Hymns are fitted. The association of Hymns with Tunes is so much a matter of personal taste or accident, that no arrangement can be made which will not disturb some associa tions. I have endeavored to unite them by something more than an arbitrary relation, so as to justify that permanent union which is desirable. The Hymns are followed by a selection of Psalms, (in Dr. Noyes's version, ) arranged for alternate reading. I intended to add a series of Scripture Lessons, selected from the various parts of the Bible; but have concluded to reserve them for a separate volume. To the children on the new chapel, this book, prepared first of all for them, ' is affectionately dedicated, by their Pastor. He hopes that they will learn to love its Music and its Hymns, to sing them In school, at church, and at home to know them by heart and to cherish the true thoughts and holy feelings which they express. And often 111 coming years may these words and melodies, associated with happy hours, sacred resolutions, and dear friends come up in their memories to comfort and to strengthen them.
