Book excerpt: This book reviews a Naturalistic worldview based on a scientifi c understanding of the world and the broad perspective of cosmic evolution. We are the product of a long evolutionary process that has been marked by four pivotal events: the Big-Bang, the appearance of life, the emergence of mind and the evolution of culture. The issue of whether or not the universe had a beginning remains undefi ned. The origin of life from inanimate matter also remains undefi ned, but the evolution of life forms by natural selection is supported by many lines of evidence. The origin of mind and consciousness can be traced to the evolution of neurons in multicellular animals. These cells have numerous extensions capable of forming connections and infl uencing the function of distantly located cells. Most scientists adopt a monist physicalist view and reject the existence of substance dualism. Evolutionary psychology holds that human nature is the result of our genes and their interaction with the environment. Aided by their superior cognitive abilities, and by the transmission of knowledge, modern humans have created a rich culture. Because we can not prove that everything is physical, it is better to reject Ontologic Naturalism and embrace Methodological Naturalism. This worldview has an ethical, social and political dimension, best described by Planetary Humanism, a form of humanism that is not anthropocentric and is global and ecologic in scope.

It critiques contemporary atheistic cosmologies, incl. Steady State, Oscillationism, Big Fizz, that affirm the eternity & self-sufficiency of the universe without God. It defends and revises Process Theology and arguments for God's existence from the universe's life-supporting order & contingent existence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conflict of Naturalism and Humanism The author is deeply conscious of the incompleteness of this study in view of the vast range of the subject. But if it may serve to stimulate a few minds to intelligent consideration of a large and important problem in our present-day thought it will have fulfilled its purpose. My grateful acknowledgments are due to Professor John Dewey, whose vigorous thought has vivified and reshaped my entire philosophy of nature and of man. Likewise I gladly acknowledge my indebtedness to Professor John Angus MacVannel, whose instruction first stimulated my interest in the living problems of philosophy: and to Professor Paul Monroe whose ideals of careful scholarship I have attempted to follow in the preparation of this study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the world just a cultural construct where people create their own realities? In this illuminating and wide-ranging philosophical treatise, Brian Morris critiques broad swathes of recent theory as he seeks to reclaim anthropology as a historical social science. He achieves this by grounding it within a metaphysic of "dialectical naturalism" or "evolutionary realism"--a tradition long ignored by academic philosophy. After reviewing the anthropological background of this worldview--the Greeks and the Enlightenment--Morris explores two essential themes. First, he critically assesses the main forms of dialectical naturalism, including Darwin's evolutionary theory, Marx's historical materialism, and the hylo-realism of the philosopher-scientist Mario Bunge. Second, he offers a strong plea to retain the dual heritage of anthropology as a historical science that combines both humanism and naturalism. A powerful philosophical manifesto, the book cogently upholds dialectical naturalism as the most grounding philosophy for anthropology and the social sciences.

Cyborgs, robots, avatars, and bio-technologically created beings are new entities that exist alongside biological human beings. As with many emerging technologies, many people will find the concept foreign and frightening. There is a strong possibility that these entities will be mistreated. Philosophical Issues of Human Cyborgization and the Necessity of Prolegomena on Cyborg Ethics discusses the ethics of human cyborgization as well as emerging technologies of robots and avatars that exhibit human-like qualities. The chapters build a strong case for the necessity of cyborg ethics and protocols for preserving the vitality of life within an ever-advancing technological society. Covering topics such as cyborg hacking, historical reality, and naturalism, this book is a dynamic resource for scientists, ethicists, cyber behavior professionals, students and professors of both technological and philosophical studies, faculty of higher education, philosophers, AI engineers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) has long been recognized as one of the great innovators in the history of art. Through detailed analysis of paintings from his early Roman period, 1594-1602, this study now situates his art firmly within both its humanistic and its scientific context. Here, both his revolutionary painterly techniques--pronounced naturalism and dramatic chiaroscuro--and his novel subject matter--still-life compositions and genre scenes--are finally put into their proper cultural and contemporary environment. This environment included the contemporary rise of empirical scientific observation, a procedure--like Caravaggio's naturalism--committed to a close study of the phenomenal world. It also included the interests of his erudite, aristocratic patrons, influential Romans whose tastes reflected the Renaissance commitment to humanistic studies, emblematic literature and classical lore. The historical evidence entered into the record here includes both contemporary writings addressing the instructive purposes of art and the ancient literary sources commonly manipulated in Caravaggio's time that sanctioned a socially realistic art. The overall result of this investigation is characterize the work of the painter as an expression of "learned naturalism."
