Book excerpt: Human trafficking is an extreme example of social injustice, perpetuated by dominant/subordinate attitudes that condone violence, resulting in significant suffering for individuals and harm to societies. This book is a comprehensive study of the challenges facing service providers who work with trafficked victims of sexual exploitation in northern Germany. The results are discussed from the perspective of the Relational Cultural Theory, as well as from the Sexual-Racial Contract Theory. The insights offer a vital gateway to sustainable social change and social justice to help end human trafficking. (Series: Gender Discussion / Gender-Diskussion - Vol. 15)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human trafficking is one of the most urgent political challenges of our global age. As the UN defines it, human trafficking is essentially a form of non-institutional slavery, but also includes the trafficking of human organs. It has been resistant to abolition and difficult to combat. Human trafficking is organized through networks and is clandestine in nature, making it very hard for governments to even detect. Yet it is arguably the most severe form of human exploitation in the world. Traffickers trade in the immediate human suffering of their ‘goods’. Human trafficking is a pressing political issue for two key reasons. First, because its victims are often subjected to virtual slavery, exposing them to severe physical and mental abuse. Their rights are brutally violated and they are robbed of their f- damental freedom and dignity. The severity and estimated scope of this abuse has made the issue a priority for the American and German governments. Second, - man trafficking is estimated to be one of the top three sources of income globally, for organized crime. Only trafficking in drugs and arms surpasses human trafficking as a means for such illegal networks to generate funds. Criminal networks undermine the integrity of democratic states and destabilize their social and economic order. - come generated from human trafficking provides such networks with the resources they need to sustain a wide range of harmful activities.

Book excerpt: The 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report highlights the successes achieved and the remaining challenges before us on this important issue. The primary focus is to showcase the responsibility of governments to criminalize human trafficking and hold offenders accountable. This year's report theme is increasing criminal accountability of human traffickers and addressing challenges in prosecution - an essential component of 3P- paradigm of prosecution, protection, and prevention. It provides an overview of the type of human trafficking offenses that are taking place around the world in violation of human rights. The text includes side bars of situational human trafficking experiences to allow the reader to understand the different types that occur throughout the world. High school students and above may find this report helpful for research and writing essays about human rights and law enforcement of human trafficking. American citizens, policy analysts and decision-makers, law enforcement personnel, and human rights policy activists and advocates and world leaders may refer to this report as a reference on these crimes. There was considerable international concern that this event would contribute to a sharp increase in the number of women trafficked to Germany for the purpose of sexual exploitation during the World Cup. This report investigates whether the number of victims of human trafficking for sexual exploitation increased during this sporting event and the measures taken by the authorities and non-governmental organisations to counter trafficking in Germany during the event. All data, information and experts' statements that are available to date strongly indicate that an increase in human trafficking, during and after the World Cup did not actually occur. Recommendations are given to help combat the trafficking in persons during similar major events and to provide a tool for future event organisers, authorities and NGOs.

The Report covers and provides an overview of patterns and flows of trafficking in persons at the global, regional and national levels, based on trafficking cases detected mainly between 2012 and 2014. It looks at links between trafficking in persons, migration and conflict, and how refugees may be particularly vulnerable to being trafficked. The worldwide response to trafficking in persons, particularly in terms of criminalization and prosecution of trafficking crimes, is also a focus of this edition of the Global Report. Also included are the Country Profiles.

The American approach emphasizes strengthening legal codes and law enforcement tools while enhancing services to victims, and has led to a victim-centered approach. The Swedish model criminalizes demand for trafficking and handling the ¿supply¿ through more admin. means, and has led to an equality-centered approach. Both countries believe sex trafficking is an international issue that requires a mixture of law enforcement, social welfare and foreign policies to solve. This report compares the responses in the U.S. and Sweden to identify synergies and divergences that might impact practice in both countries. Illustrations.
