Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln: From His Birth to His Inauguration as President At the time of Mr. Lincoln's death, I determined to write his history, as I had in my possession much valuable material for such a purpose. I did not then imagine that any person could have better or more extensive materials than I possessed. I soon learned, however, that Mr. William H. Herndon of Springfield, Ill., was similarly engaged. There could be no rivalry between us; for the supreme object of both was to make the real history and character of Mr. Lincoln as well known to the public as they were to us. He deplored, as I did, the many publications pretending to be biographies which came teeming from the press, so long as the public inter est about Mr. Lincoln excited the hope of gain. Out of the mass of works which appeared, of one only Dr. Holland's - is it possible to speak with any degree of respect. From this latter volume I have borrowed, with but few exceptions, the additions now introduced. An earlier article by myself, also published in Good Words, has also been appended. I need hardly say that the work in no sense pretends to be a biography Of the late Presi dent, the greater part Of whose life is known as yet only in outline to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Pioneer Home to the White House: Life of Abraham Lincoln; Boyhood, Youth, Manhood, Assassination, Death HE author of this volume wrote the first Life of Abraham Lincoln - the pioneer boy, and how HE became president - which, after a very large sale, passed out of print in consequence of the destruction of the plates by fire. A Campaign Life of only thirty-two pages, relating chiefly to his public career, was issued at the West, after his nomination for the Presidency in 1860; but The Pioneer Boy was the first complete biography of the man. Dr. Holland Said of it, several years later, in his Life of Lincoln, A singularly faithful statement of the early experience of Abraham Lincoln. The materials for the Cam paign Life spoken of were furnished by Mr. Lincoln, and he very kindly directed that pamphlet, with a quantity of unused matter, to be passed into our hands, together with the names and addresses of several of his early associates, reared with him in the wilderness, and of intimate friends in later life, from whom the most valuable information, never before given to the public, was received. From these sources of knowledge The Pioneer Boy was prepared. In the preparation of this new, larger and more elab orate Life of Lincoln, we have had, in addition to the above sources of information, others of even greater value, at least so far as his character and public services relate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln Lincoln lore has become so rich in recent years, and so voluminous withal, that he who would add to it must needs show cause why his book should be read. And yet, in spite of all that has been written, it cannot be said that we yet have a thoroughly satisfactory interpretation of the life and work and character of our First American. A few have had the necessary knowledge and sympathy, but their literary power has not always been adequate. Others have written well, but they have failed of insight and understanding. In the meantime the volume of facts, impressions, and reminiscences increases, and by assembling items from a variety of sources we are coming to a composite conception of our prophet-president that is at once vivid and satisfying. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A History It is not, therefore, with any thought of materially adding to his already accomplished renown that we have written the work which we now offer to our fellow-citizens. But each age owes to its successors the truth in regard to its own annals. The young men who have been born since Sumter was fired on have a right to all their elders know of the important events they came too late to share in. The life and the fame of Lincoln will not have their legitimate effect of instruction and example unless the Circumstances among which he lived and found his opportunities are placed in their true light before the men who never saw him. To write the life of this great American in such a way as to show his relations to the times in which he moved, thbe stupendous Issues he controlled, the remarkable men by whom he was surrounded, has been the purpose which the authors have diligently pursued for many years. We can say nothing of the result of our labor; only those who have been similarly employed can appreciate the sense of inadequate performance with which we regard what we have accomplished. We can only Claim for our work that we have devoted to it sixteen years of almost unremitting assiduity that we have neglected no means in our power to ascertain the truth that we have rejected no authentic facts essential to a candid story that we have had no theory to establish, no personal grudge to gratify, no unavowed objects to subserve. We have aimed to write a sufficiently full and absolutely honest history of a great man and a great time; and although we take it for granted that we have made mistakes, that we have fallen into such errors and inaccuracies as are unavoidable in so large a work, we promise there shall not be found a line in all these chapters dictated by malice or unfairness. Our desire to have this work placed under the eyes of the greatest possible number of readers induced us to accept the generous offer of the century magazine to print it first in these pages. In this way it will receive the intelligent criticism of a million people, con temporaries of the events narrated, and we expect to profit by the suggestions and corrections which such a method of publication invites. Moreover, as we have endeavored to write this history with a purpose of absolute fairness to every party and every section of the country, we ardently desire that, by its wide dissemination, it may contribute to the growth and maintenance throughout all our borders of that spirit of freedom and nationality for which Abraham Lincoln lived and died. Book excerpt: Excerpt from President Lincoln as War Statesman The views of these professedly military histories, mingled in varying proportions, we find swallowed whole by the writers of many general histories who repeat, parrot-like, jibes against Lincoln's imbecile vacillation or bull-headed blundering, as the case may be, without attempting to understand or to analyze the points under discussion. Amid all this harsh condemnation the singu lar fact stands out that the common people, in whose good sense and judgment Lincoln so firmly trusted, have returned the compliment; they have not only refused to accept the quips of the captions critics but, on the con trary, as James Schouler so aptly puts it, see more colossal as time recedes, the figure of Abraham Lincoln, towering above his contemporaries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on Abraham Lincoln: Late President of the United States, Pronounced at the City Hall, Springfield, Mass;, April 19, 1865 Therefore, without trying to tell how much we loved him, how much we honored him, and how deeply and tenderly We mourn his loss, let us briefly trace the reasons why his death has made so deep an impression upon us. It is not five years since the nation knew but little of Abraham Lin coln. We had heard of him as a man much honored by the members of a single party - not then dominant - in his own state. We had seen something Of his work; We knew that he was held to be a man of notable 'and peculiar power, and of pure character and life. Indeed, it is doubt ful whether the nation knew enough Of him to justify the selection made by the convention which presented him to the country as a candidate. For its highest office. To this office, however, he was triumphantly elected, and since that time his life has run like a thread of gold through the history of the most remarkable period Of the nation's ex istence.
