Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All countries aim to improve housing conditions for their citizens but many have been forced by the financial crisis to reduce government expenditure. Social housing is at the crux of this tension. Policy-makers, practitioners and academics want to know how other systems work and are looking for something written in clear English, where there is a depth of understanding of the literature in other languages and direct contributions from country experts across the continent. Social Housing in Europe combines a comparative overview of European social housing written by scholars with in-depth chapters written by international housing experts. The countries covered include Austria, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands and Sweden, with a further chapter devoted to CEE countries other than Hungary. The book provides an up-to-date international comparison of social housing policy and practice. It offers an analysis of how the social housing system currently works in each country, supported by relevant statistics. It identifies European trends in the sector, and opportunities for innovation and improvement. These country-specific chapters are accompanied by topical thematic chapters dealing with subjects such as the role of social housing in urban regeneration, the privatisation of social housing, financing models, and the impact of European Union state aid regulations on the definitions and financing of social housing.

Book excerpt: This open access book discusses booming housing markets in cities around the globe, and the resulting challenges for policymakers and central banks. Cities are booming everywhere, leading to a growing demand for urban housing. In many cities this demand is out-pacing supply, which causes house prices to soar and increases the pressure on rental markets. These developments are posing major challenges for policymakers, central banks and other authorities responsible for ensuring financial stability, and economic well-being in general. This volume collects views from high-level policymakers and researchers, providing essential insights into these challenges, their impact on society, the economy and financial stability, and possible policy responses. The respective chapters address issues such as the popularity of cities, the question of a credit-fueled housing bubble, the role of housing supply frictions and potential policy solutions. Given its scope, the book offers a revealing read and valuable guide for everyone involved in practical policymaking for housing markets, mortgage credit and financial stability.

Book excerpt: With the supply of residential dwellings in the Netherlands having failed to live up to demand over the last decade, apprehension among the population about the availability of affordable housing has risen. Particularly spatial, regulatory, planning, environmental and supply chain constraints have kept a lid on construction. Recognizing the socio-economic challenges posed by inadequate housing supply, the government has embarked on an ambitious agenda with promising steps to boost the availability of affordable properties. To strengthen the traction of housing policies to reach its intended goals, a larger role for economic incentives and private sector involvement should be evaluated.

Book excerpt: People have been living on and along the water for centuries, and the Netherlands, with its polders, dikes and waterways, boasts a unique tradition in this regard. The consequences of climate change and urban expansion for this densely populated delta are great, which is a driving force for experiments with innovative forms of housing and organizational principles. Various housing types have been devised for this watery environment over recent years: floating dwellings, amphibious dwellings, pile dwellings, mound dwellings and dike dwellings. The first pilot schemes have already been realized, but now those clusters of dwellings will grow into complete amphibious districts with a dedicated infrastructure, mains and services. This challenges urban and rural planners, developers, policymakers, designers and other experts to integrate water in their visions for housing and urban development.

Book excerpt: Social sciences have always been an important tool that enables human beings to examine and understand society. Through social sciences, researchers gain understandings of social phenomena and changes by providing commentaries, producing explanations, and attempting to synthesize a diversity of information sets to formulate theories. Since the concept of change has been the hallmark of the new millennium, researchers have witnessed a transformation in every aspect of the modern world at an ever-increasing speed, particularly in the social facet of human life. Ways of thinking that had previously been upheld and taught may, therefore, no longer be appropriate or effective as tools to understand contemporary phenomena and changes. The Handbook of Research on Current Trends in Asian Economics, Business, and Administration is a critical reference source that examines different aspects of social sciences, management, sociology, and education to better understand today’s society and social life in the Asian context. The book identifies trends, impacts, and implications of disruptive technologies for business and socio-economic development as well as strategic advantage on different levels of business and administration. Covering topics that include e-commerce, green management, information technology, economic growth, and distance learning, this book is essential for economists, academicians, government officials, policymakers, social scientists, managers, leaders, behavioral scientists, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: Soaring real estate prices and valuations despite the economic downturn brought by the pandemic have focussed the attention of Dutch policymakers on potential macro-financial and socio-economic implications. In this context, our paper reviews the salient features of Dutch commercial and residential real estate markets with an eye to identify pertinent risks and challenges. While we find that the Dutch authorities have made considerable strides to strengthen real estate-related policies in recent years, some, and partly long-standing, issues remain, requiring additional efforts to bolster financial stability, address housing supply shortages and manage secular changes affecting property markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Grinberg has made a study which brings to light some aspects of Dutch housing which till now have been neglected in most analyses in books and maga zines. Grinberg is a USA citizen and studied architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. With the help of a Sheldon Fellowship and a grant from the Dutch Minis terie van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening he was able to do the research for this book in The Netherlands for a year. Grinberg is working together with his wife, who is Dutch - one of the reasons he can read and speak Dutch. His specific situation as an American who can read publications in the Dutch language gave him a unique opportunity for access to original source material and recent studies. Until now, most publications about Dutch architecture in the period 1900-1940 included housing projects mostly because they were part of 'het Nieuwe Bouh2n'. This is the Dutch expression for the modern architecture resulting from action groups such as De Stijl, who introduced new space-time awareness as a basis for the expression of architecture. Oud, Mondriaan, Rietveld, and Van Doesburg of De Stijl were followed by the groups de 8 from Amsterdam and Opbouw from Rotter dam. Members of these groups called themselves anti-aesthetic functionalists - Stam, Merkelbach, Van Tijen, Van Loghem, Duiker, Van der Vlugt, Van den Broek, and others.
