Book excerpt: As the fight for equal rights continues, Defiant takes a critical look at the strides and struggles of the past in this revelatory and moving memoir about a young Black man growing up in the South during the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. For fans of It's Trevor Noah: Born a Crime, Stamped, and Brown Girl Dreaming. "With his compelling memoir, Hudson will inspire young readers to emulate his ideals and accomplishments.” –Booklist, Starred Review Born in 1946 in Mansfield, Louisiana, Wade Hudson came of age against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement. From their home on Mary Street, his close-knit family watched as the country grappled with desegregation, as the Klan targeted the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and as systemic racism struck across the nation and in their hometown. Amidst it all, Wade was growing up. Getting into scuffles, playing baseball, immersing himself in his church community, and starting to write. Most important, Wade learned how to find his voice and use it. From his family, his community, and his college classmates, Wade learned the importance of fighting for change by confronting the laws and customs that marginalized and demeaned people. This powerful memoir reveals the struggles, joys, love, and ongoing resilience that it took to grow up Black in segregated America, and the lessons that carry over to our fight for a better future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Surrender series revolves around a club in Seattle, Washington. The heroes in this series are wealthy men who find the perfect women to enrich their lives. This growing series consists of nine books so far. This box set includes books 4-6. Choosing Kellen: Sabine I came to Seattle for the summer to visit Abby. I came to experiment. To dabble in her lifestyle. I came because she’s so happy, and I’m jealous. I’ve tried lots of things at Surrender, except one. When Kellen proposes I spend two weeks with him, I can’t turn him down. Now, I’m in his home. I’m his little. It’s unnerving, and I’m very naughty. What difference does it make? It’s only for two weeks. It’s not like he would ever invite me to stay. Kellen I’m not ready to move on after losing my wife. Plus, Sabine is too green for me. But I have the time, and I need to put myself back out there. Now she’s in my home, learning the ropes. She’s challenging. Why does she defy me so often? I’m not sure I’m the right Daddy for her. She needs boundaries. She’s testing me. And then she takes things one step too far… Pleasing Josie: Josie I have a great life. Great job. Great home. Great man. Everything is perfect. I can’t complain. So, why am I restless? What is missing? Grayson I’m a lucky guy with an amazing woman in my life. She’s my perfect match. The yin to my yang. But something is off. She needs something I’m not sure I can give her. Quinten I’m a busy man with a demanding job. I don’t have time for a relationship, but I’m always eager to help people find themselves. When Josie and Grayson step into my life, I’m caught off guard. She craves the nurturing hand of a Daddy. He isn’t fully in tune with his needs. I can help them, but with every step I’m getting more emotionally attached. Can the three of us find a new normal that fills all of our desires? Honoring Hudson: Cindy I work at the front desk at Surrender, but it’s just a job. I don’t play in the club. After seven years, I know all the members and I’m familiar with every sort of kink. Including mine. Master Hudson is new, and he spends a lot of time flirting with me. I know he likes me, but I can’t fall for him. I won’t. I have too much baggage. No one can ever know my secrets. I’ll never reveal my little side. Not even to Master Hudson. I won’t take the risk. Not with anyone. No matter how much I crave a Daddy of my own. Hudson She catches my eye the first time I enter the club. She’s mysterious and sweet and nervous and a little OCD. I don’t know her secrets, even after chipping away at her walls for months. But I’m half in love with her the first time she submits to me. When her world comes crashing in, I’m there for her. Then I see the inside of her closet and my heart stops. She’s mine, and I’ll do whatever it takes to convince her to be my little.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer O. N. Pruitt (1891–1967) was for some forty years the de facto documentarian of Lowndes County, Mississippi, and its county seat, Columbus--known to locals as "Possum Town." His body of work recalls many FSA photographers, but Pruitt was not an outsider with an agenda; he was a community member with intimate knowledge of the town and its residents. He photographed his fellow white citizens and Black ones as well, in circumstances ranging from the mundane to the horrific: family picnics, parades, river baptisms, carnivals, fires, funerals, two of Mississippi's last public and legal executions by hanging, and a lynching. From formal portraits to candid images of events in the moment, Pruitt's documentary of a specific yet representative southern town offers viewers today an invitation to meditate on the interrelations of photography, community, race, and historical memory. Columbus native Berkley Hudson was photographed by Pruitt, and for more than three decades he has considered and curated Pruitt's expansive archive, both as a scholar of media and visual journalism and as a community member. This stunning book presents Pruitt's photography as never before, combining more than 190 images with a biographical introduction and Hudson's short essays and reflective captions on subjects such as religion, ethnic identity, the ordinary graces of everyday life, and the exercise of brutal power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social history of the native peoples of the American South, bridging prehistory and history The past 20 years have witnessed a change in the study of the prehistory and history of the native peoples of the American South. This paradigm shift is the bridging of prehistory and history to fashion a seamless social history that includes not only the 16th-century Late Mississippian period and the 18th-century colonial period but also the largely forgotten--and critically important--century in between. The shift is in part methodological, for it involves combining methods from anthropology, history, and archaeology. It is also conceptual and theoretical, employing historical and archaeological data to reconstruct broad patterns of history--not just political history with Native Americans as a backdrop, nor simply an archaeology with added historical specificity, but a true social history of the Southeastern Indians, spanning their entire existence in the American South. The scholarship underlying this shift comes from many directions, but much of the groundwork can be attributed to Charles Hudson. The papers in this volume were contributed by Hudson’s colleagues and former students (many now leading scholars themselves) in his honor. The assumption links these papers is that of a historical transformation between Mississippian societies and the Indian societies of the historic era that requires explanation and critical analysis. In all of the chapters, the legacy of Hudson’s work is evident. Anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians are storming the bridge that connects prehistory and history in a manner unimaginable 20 years ago. While there remains much work to do on the path toward understanding this transformation and constructing a complete social history of the Southeastern Indians, the work of Charles Hudson and his colleagues have shown the way.

Book excerpt: A “soul-stirring debut,” Boys of Alabama tells the “bewitching” (Michelle Hart, O, The Oprah Magazine) tale of sixteen-year-old Max’s first year in America. “Daring, unusual . . . and startlingly fresh” (Don Noble, Alabama Public Radio), Boys of Alabama announced Genevieve Hudson’s place in the canon of the southern gothic alongside Donna Tartt and Harper Lee. Newly arrived in Alabama, Max falls in love, questions his faith, and navigates a strange power. Although his German parents don’t know what to make of a South pining for the past, shy Max thrives after being taken in by the football team. But when he meets fishnet-wearing Pan in physics class, they embark on a quixotic, consuming relationship. Writing in “prose that is always imaginative and sensual” (Sarah Neilson, Believer), Hudson offers a complex portrait of masculinity, religion, immigration, and the adolescent pressures that require total conformity.
