Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this interdisciplinary study, the authors argue that Hong Kong should strengthen the mobility of its population. One country, two systems is a concept not uniquely reserved for post-1997 Hong Kong. Historically, the territory has thrived on being simultaneously part of China and the world. Flexible positioning at the margins has made it a node in the crossroads of empires, trading communities, industrial assembly lines, and now global finance, consumption and media. This essential characteristic, Hong Kong as a 'space of flow,' has always been the source of its success. The book shows that a porous border in fact has been maintained in the post-war years. Unique institutions developed over the century have absorbed waves of immigrants entering from China. However, the study warns that the population is now aging when compared with other world cities and China's fast growing urban centers. Only with a massive input of young, educated, and diverse human talents can Hong Kong remain a vibrant portal for the creative fusion of capital, goods, services, cultural horizons, aspirations and civic energies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of Hong Kong’s innovative and creative industries and the challenges they face serves as an important case study for other Chinese and Asian cities that are actively developing their innovative and creative industries in the era of globalization. The return of sovereignty over Hong Kong back to China in 1997 has led to both collaboration and competition between the two places in innovative and creative sectors for the Greater China and Asian Regions. Hong Kong has remained unique in spite of the integration, but she has to strike a delicate balance between being simultaneously a Chinese and an international city. This book looks at different innovative and creative industries, such as international art and culture exhibition, innovative technology, digital entertainment, TV and movies, as well as government policy for innovative and creative industries, particularly the changing competitive landscape brought about by the latest Great Bay Area development. Drawing insights from cultural history, innovation economics, cultural policy studies, and cultural geography, this book explores the opportunities and challenges of Hong Kong's innovative and creative industries, in particular after the change of sovereignty in 1997. It demonstrates that the city’s legacy, and heavy government input in capital, do not guarantee their sustainable development. This is a book not only for policymakers or academics interested in innovative and creative industries but also to students contemplating a career in these areas in Hong Kong, the Greater China and the Asian Region.

Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years Hong Kong society has witnessed dramatic change, and nowhere is this better reflected than in the realm of media and communications. Across the fields of journalism, public relations and advertising, we can see the changing trends in terms of audience consumption and interaction. From technological developments to the shift in audience participation, the expectations and functions of these professions have been greatly altered. While many of these changes are occurring worldwide, within Hong Kong the processes of change have been further complicated by recent social and political events. Through a selection of essays by field experts, this volume explores the evolution of media itself as well as the complex causes underlying these developments. It identifies not only the difficulties and opportunities for media professionals today, but also the evolving role of the audience.

Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical guide to cyber law – the law affecting information and communication technology (ICT) – in Hong Kong covers every aspect of the subject, including intellectual property rights in the ICT sector, relevant competition rules, drafting and negotiating ICT-related contracts, electronic transactions, privacy issues, and computer crime. Lawyers who handle transnational matters will appreciate the detailed explanation of specific characteristics of practice and procedure. Following a general introduction, the book assembles its information and guidance in seven main areas of practice: the regulatory framework of the electronic communications market; software protection, legal protection of databases or chips, and other intellectual property matters; contracts with regard to software licensing and network services, with special attention to case law in this area; rules with regard to electronic evidence, regulation of electronic signatures, electronic banking, and electronic commerce; specific laws and regulations with respect to the liability of network operators and service providers and related product liability; protection of individual persons in the context of the processing of personal data and confidentiality; and the application of substantive criminal law in the area of ICT. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable time-saving tool for business and legal professionals alike. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Hong Kong will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative law in this relatively new and challenging field.

Book excerpt: The directory records information on 763 libraries in Hong Kong, listing 53 community centre libraries, 62 general and public libraries, 27 post-secondary college and university libraries, 16 theological libraries, 432 school libraries, 50 government departmental libraries, 24 hospital/medical/nursing libraries, 95 special libraries and 4 club/society libraries. In October 1994, questionnaires were sent or faxed to every library listed in the previous edition and various other sources. For those libraries who had contributed to the previous edition (1988) a copy of their previous entries was supplied for amendment and addition; to prospective new entrants sample entries were sent for general guidance. Information in the directory has been compiled from the returned questionnaires or direct telephone contacts with those who did not respond to the initial questionnaires. The final deadline for collection of data was September 1995. Approximately 750 questionnaires were sent out. More than 98% responded, many with enthusiasm for the project. The response to the questionnaires is gratifying, which indicates that the directory has achieved a high level of respect among libraries and information services in Hong Kong. The main body of the directory consists of a single alphabetic sequence of entries for the various institutions, with a classified section at the end. Each entry contains detailed information such as the address, person in charge, opening hours, services provided, funds available, stock, loan and reader statistics, catalogue type, and extension activities organized. The directory serves as a major resource for librarians and information specialists and is a necessary purchase of any library and information centre.

To address this situation, the Case Clearing House of Hong Kong has encouraged local authors to write cases based on true-to-life Hong Kong situations. In this volume, eighteen cases are selected from the library of the Case Clearing House. Areas covered include introduction to human resources management; human resources planning; staffing, orientation and placement; management and development; compensation and benefits; employee management; and occupational safety. Managers in the human resources-related industry will find the situations presented in the book similar to those they face in their work and will be able to learn from the discussions of the cases presented. Students will find the cases a valuable means of developing their understanding of human resources practice in Hong Kong. The book will also benefit trainers who will be able to make use of the cases on training programmes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a million Hong Kong residents fled their homeland during the thirteen years before Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997--and nearly half of those returned within several years of leaving. Filled with detailed, first-hand stories of nine Hong Kong families over nearly two decades, Hong Kong Movers and Stayers is an exhaustive and intimate look at the forces behind Hong Kong families' successful and failed efforts at migration and settlement. This multi-faceted study was begun in 1991, when migration was attributed primarily to the political anxieties of the time and the notion that Hong Kong residents were seeking a better life in the West. Defining migration as a process, not a single act of leaving, Hong Kong Movers and Stayers provides an antidote to ethnocentric and simplistic theories by uncovering migration stories as they relate to social structures and social capital. With an approach that melds survey analysis, personal biography, and sociology, Hong Kong Movers and Stayers provides a depth of understanding by comparing multiple families and gives voice to the interplay of diverse family roles, gender, and age as motivating factors in migration.
