Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the effects of ability grouping on fifth grade students at 47 elementary schools in a large urban school district. Using disaggregated standardized test data that statistically measures achievement growth, this study analyzes gains among students assigned to prior achievement quintiles as compared to three grouping strategies: homogeneous, heterogeneous with special classes for advanced and special education, and heterogeneous ability groups. The findings suggest that the grouping strategies used in these schools are effective for the students at these schools. Most significant is that, on average, low achieving schools are grouping students in ways that are exhibiting positive gains among low achievers. Conversely, schools with large populations of high achievers are grouping in ways that are making gains among high achievers. Average students show similar gains among all three grouping strategies. Overall, the research and data suggest the importance of using multiple data sources, knowledge of students and school culture, as well as pedagogy to determine appropriate grouping strategies for particular schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guided Math Lessons in Fifth Grade provides detailed lessons to help you bring guided math groups to life. Based on the bestselling Guided Math in Action, this practical book offers 16 lessons, taught in a round of 3—concrete, pictorial and abstract. The lessons are based on the priority standards and cover fluency, word problems, fractions, and decimals. Author Dr. Nicki Newton shows you the content, as well as the practices and processes, that should be worked on in the lessons so that students not only learn the content but also how to solve problems, reason, communicate their thinking, model, use tools, use precise language and see structure and patterns. Throughout the book, you’ll find tools, templates and blackline masters so that you can instantly adapt the lesson to your specific needs and use it right away. With the easy-to-follow plans in this book, students can work more effectively in small guided math groups—and have loads of fun along the way! Remember that guided math groups are about doing the math. So throughout these lessons, you will see students working with manipulatives to make meaning, doing mathematical sketches to show what they understand and can make sense of the abstract numbers. When students are given the opportunities to make sense of the math in hands-on and visual ways, then the math begins to make sense to them!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Target the Math...Support the Students...Provide Access for All The need for focused small group math instruction has never been greater. Today’s education landscape is fraught with learning divides unlike anything we’ve faced in recent years. We need new ways of teaching students who have remarkably varying levels of understanding and vastly different needs. Meaningful Small Groups in Math, Grades K-5 offers practical guidance on how to meet the diverse needs of today’s students. Written for K-5 classroom teachers, math interventionists and instructional coaches, this user-friendly, accessible book provides guidance on the necessary components of small group instruction in math, trajectories for small-group instruction on specific concepts, and practical steps for getting started. Readers will find Checklists and templates for implementing small group, sample lessons in the major content domains Emphasis on flexible groups Intervention and extension ideas for differentiating learning A chapter devoted to developing small-group programs across a school or organization Small group instruction in mathematics has not been as well-developed as its counterpart in the reading world. In K-5 math classrooms, small-group instruction has typically been reduced to learning centers and rotation stations, with little emphasis on differentiated, small-group, teacher-facilitated learning. To meet the needs of today’s students, a more focused approach is needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from national and international assessments indicate that school children in the United States are not learning mathematics well enough. Many students cannot correctly apply computational algorithms to solve problems. Their understanding and use of decimals and fractions are especially weak. Indeed, helping all children succeed in mathematics is an imperative national goal. However, for our youth to succeed, we need to change how we're teaching this discipline. Helping Children Learn Mathematics provides comprehensive and reliable information that will guide efforts to improve school mathematics from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The authors explain the five strands of mathematical proficiency and discuss the major changes that need to be made in mathematics instruction, instructional materials, assessments, teacher education, and the broader educational system and answers some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to mathematics instruction. The book concludes by providing recommended actions for parents and caregivers, teachers, administrators, and policy makers, stressing the importance that everyone work together to ensure a mathematically literate society.

Also, with the exception of language arts, students had lower averages in each subject area when heterogeneously grouped.
