Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Grail, and Other Poems Tennyson's life is eventful only in connection with his writings. These, as they successively appeared, are the milestone marks in the as cending path of fame. The poet was born August 6, 1809, at Somersby Rectory, Lincolnshire. And his youth was passed amid such scenes as he has described in the pleasing. Verse of his earlier poems. His father, himself somewhat of a poet and artist, as well as a fine scholar, was the village rector and Alfred was one of twelve children, seven of whom were sons. Two of the latter, Frederick and Charles (afterwards Charles Tennyson Tamer), had poetic gifts; Charles, later on, joining Alfred in the publication of Poems of Two Brothers. The poet's mother was a woman of sweet and tender disposition. Alfred received his early train ing at the hands of his father, and, in due time, proceeded to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won the chancellor's medal for the best English poem of his year. The subject was the rather uninspiring one of Timbuctoo. At college, young Tennyson made the acquaintance of many men who attained fame in later life, among whom were Monckton Milnes (lord Houghton), Dean Alford, Frederick Denison Maurice, and, most endeared of all, Arthur Henry Hallam, son of the historian, whose memory he has immortalized in In Memoriam. The Preface, which is dated March, 1827, states that the poems contained in the volume 'were written from the ages of fifteen to eighteen, not conjointly, but individually; which may account for the difference of style and matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Grail: Six Kindred Addresses and Essays I intend the Holy Grail to be the binding theme that unites this sheaf of essays and addresses. The first bears that especial title, but the quest of the Grail is no less the real motive of the five other chapters in this book. For example, no men since the days of Galahad and Percivale have more utterly lost themselves in the knightly quest than those two Southern poets whose early death deprived the world of mystical rich music, but brought them their vision at last. The Crusaders were knights of the Grail. "Liberty and law" shows the present need of lance and spear, while the final chapter hints of a Golden Age to come. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of the Grail, and Other Verses The heart and soul's hunger is constantly revealed in his poems, and one knows that such a hunger can only be appeased in a perfect world. To anyone so sensitive suffering is inevitable - but a suffering that is accepted, that does not deny him an abiding peace and a real and frequent joy. The poet shows that a soul's longing is something above dissatisfaction. Ugliness horrifies him, but he accepts the truth - and his pleading is ever at one with his thanks. He was the fourth of twelve children, who grew up under the guidance of parents singularly high-minded and unworldly of temper and cultivated in their tastes. All through the years he retained the tenderest memories of the rectory - of "the Gothic vaulted dining-room, with stained-glass windows making 'butterfly souls' on the walls; of the woodbine that climbed into the bay window of his nursery; of the beautiful stone chimney-piece carved by his father; of the pleasant little drawing-room lined with bookshelves, and furnished with yellow curtains, sofas, and chairs, and looking out on the lawn." The children who grew up in these attractive surroundings were fond of imaginative ventures of all kinds; at least three of them wrote Verse, and in their games they had jousts and tourneys, or delighted themselves in listening to Alfred's stories of knights and heroes among untravelled forests. When Charles Tennyson was between sixteen and eighteen and Alfred between fifteen and seventeen, they wrote their first volume, "Poems by Two Brothers," published in 1837 by a bookseller at Louth. During these formative years of youth, Alfred Tennyson led a very quiet life in the country; he was taught Greek and Latin by his father; a well-trained scholar, and given free range of a library which had in it the standard classics.
