Book excerpt: Hollywood and science have found each other, and seem to have formed the strongest bond to date. The increasing use of science consultants in science fiction and science-themed productions, from comedies like The Big Bang Theory to dramas like Breaking Bad, as well as the creation of the Science and Entertainment Exchange by the National Academy of Sciences, suggests a new level of Interaction between science and entertainment media that will surely benefit both sides. What finally catalyzed this reaction? This eclectic collection of essays examines the connections between Hollywood and science, with a primary focus on the current state of the relationship. It features contributions from screenwriters, producers, directors, scientists, science advisors, science writers, even a music composer and a dramaturge. The formats of the chapters contained herein are equally eclectic: some take the form of academic journal articles, some are written as less formal interviews, and some are narratives. The tones of the offerings range from the purely serious to the comedic. The first half of the book focuses on the various approaches that different television series and moves employ to incorporate accurate science into their productions. In other instances, authors explore the more fundamental aspects of science-like sound, music, and light-that enable audiences to appreciate television and film. The second half of the volume explores the effects that television and film have on the viewing public. Some authors explain the science, both explicit and implied, that can be found within various Hollywood productions, and explore instances where Hollywood and science failed to click, instead of meshing. Other authors examine the influence that Hollywood science has on the science community, public policy, and the legal system. Still others describe pedagogical applications of television and movie science to education-as well as Hollywood's role in motivating future generations of scientists and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astaire and Rogers, Tracy and Hepburn. Just the mention of their names evokes the powerful chemistry between these screen couples, which utterly transcended the often formulaic films in which they appeared together. Indeed, watching the synergistic flow of energy between charismatic screen partners is one of the great pleasures of cinema and television, as well as an important vehicle for thinking through issues of intimacy and gender relations. In this book, Martha P. Nochimson engages in a groundbreaking study of screen couple chemistry. She begins by classifying various types of couples to define what sets the synergistic couple apart from other onscreen pairings. Then she moves into extended discussions of four enduring screen couples—Maureen O'Sullivan/Johnny Weissmuller, Myrna Loy/William Powell, Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers, and Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy. Using theories of neuroscience, she demonstrates that their onscreen chemistry is a very real phenomenon, powerful enough to subvert conventional formulations of male/female relations. Material she has uncovered in the infamous Production Code Administration files illuminates the historical context of her contentions. Finally, Nochimson traces the screen couple to its present-day incarnation in such pairs as Woody Allen/Diane Keaton, Scully/Mulder of The X-Files, and Cliff/Claire Huxtable of The Cosby Show.

Zacharis Award Winner of a Whiting Award A Belletrist Amuse Book At first glance, the quirky, overworked narrator of Weike Wang’s debut novel seems to be on the cusp of a perfect life: she is studying for a prestigious PhD in chemistry that will make her Chinese parents proud (or at least satisfied), and her successful, supportive boyfriend has just proposed to her. But instead of feeling hopeful, she is wracked with ambivalence: the long, demanding hours at the lab have created an exquisite pressure cooker, and she doesn’t know how to answer the marriage question. When it all becomes too much and her life plan veers off course, she finds herself on a new path of discoveries about everything she thought she knew. Smart, moving, and always funny, this unique coming-of-age story is certain to evoke a winning reaction.

Book excerpt: From advice columnist Meredith Goldstein, a dazzling, romantic, and emotionally resonant YA debut about a teen science whiz in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who tries to crack the chemical equation for lasting love and instead wreaks havoc on herself and the boys in her life. For seventeen-year-old Maya, the equation for happiness is simple: a dream internship at MIT + two new science nerd friends + a perfect boyfriend = one amazing summer. Then Whit dumps her out of the blue. Maya is miserable until she discovers that her scientist mother, before she died, was conducting research on manipulating pheromones to enhance human attraction. If Maya can finish her mother’s work, maybe she can get Whit back. But when her experiment creates chaos in her love life, she realizes that maybe love and loss can’t be understood using the scientific method. Can she learn to trust the unmeasurables of love and attraction instead?

Book excerpt: Chemistry plays a critical role in daily life, impacting areas such as medicine and health, consumer products, energy production, the ecosystem, and many other areas. Communicating about chemistry in informal environments has the potential to raise public interest and understanding of chemistry around the world. However, the chemistry community lacks a cohesive, evidence-based guide for designing effective communication activities. This report is organized into two sections. Part A: The Evidence Base for Enhanced Communication summarizes evidence from communications, informal learning, and chemistry education on effective practices to communicate with and engage publics outside of the classroom; presents a framework for the design of chemistry communication activities; and identifies key areas for future research. Part B: Communicating Chemistry: A Framework for Sharing Science is a practical guide intended for any chemists to use in the design, implementation, and evaluation of their public communication efforts.

Accompanying website that helps you compare top online dating sites: ChemistryandNumbers.com EXCERPTS FROM CHEMISTRY & NUMBERS 2 FOUND: Love Online By Jamie Biegeleisen I gave him my number and we talked on the phone. Since things were still going well, we decided to meet that night. He drove to me and my first thought when I saw him was, "He's so short!" Not the greatest start to a date, huh? We went to a bar and ended up having a great time. We were joking and laughing and getting along really well. Unfortunately, I felt that we were in two different phases of our lives-he was still trying to find himself, and I thought that I had already done so. I don't know why, but I agreed to a second date. On my drive down to visit him I called my best friend and said, "This is our second and last date. I'm only going because he drove to Baltimore and I feel bad about that. We'll hang out on his turf and this will be it." Seven hours later I was on my way back home, calling my brother at 2 a.m., and telling him that while it could have been something I had eaten, I was pretty sure I had butterflies. Fast forward three years later and we are married. Getting Back on the Horse By Julia Light I walk down the stairs and just continue walking right out the door to the sidewalk up the block to my car jump in start her up and drive away. I have a pang of guilt. I dismiss it. How often have I been stood up, walked out on, or otherwise been "dissed"? The following day I receive an angry email. "Where did you go? I thought you might've been hurt! I was worried!!!" The guilt returns. I'm not that type of person! I decide to email him the truth using the safety of the computer. I tell him that "you lied to me about your appearance. I was uncomfortable around you and I wasn't sure what else you could be lying about. I did not mean for you to worry, but frankly we barely knew each other. Get some perspective. Best wishes." Nice Girls Don't Internet Date By Desdemona Bandini He picked me up in his Cadillac Escalade SUV and dropped hints of his million-dollar ventures, but we had fun. The next date he wanted me to go to his palatial crib and watch a movie while he cooked for me. Translation: Sex. I was suppose to do the usual, "Oh, your car is big, your house is so nice, do me." But I didn't. I said I would go on a date, but not to his house. He threw a tantrum and that was that. The next guy was James 007, who was from the South, and had an adorable photo of a blond yuppie that turned out to be very old. He had straggly black hair and looked like the devil. His music choice: Marilyn Manson. He requested I wear black. When he tried to spank me within 10 minutes of meeting me, I'd had enough. Cyber Love and the Swingers Club By Dana Verdino Ken whispered in my ear, "They're swingers. Everyone here swings." For a moment
