Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha, Vol. 1: The Gate City, and Douglas County, Nebraska, a Record of Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement To tell the story of the hardships encountered and the obstacles overcome by the pioneers, as well as the accomplishments of those who came after them, has been the object in view in the writing of this history. The work has been one involving great care and labor, but the publishers confidently assert that no effort has been spared to give to the pe0p1e of Omaha and Douglas County a history that is at once authentic and comprehensive. Authentic, because, as far as possible, the official records of city and county have been consulted as sources of information; and comprehensive, because, it is believed, no important event has been overlooked or neglected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha and Omaha Men I became a resident of Omaha in 1870 and lived here for many years. Here I was married, here our four children were born and here one of them died. After an absence of a number of years, and having sold a newspaper business in Oregon and thus being footloose, I concluded to return to Omaha and publish something of a history of the city I first saw as a boy and when it was a very small community. I found that an exhaustive history of Omaha and Douglas County had just been published by an eastern firm and that my old friend, Attorney Ed. F. Morearty, had recently had published an interesting story of Omaha covering the period of his residence here, from 1880, and hence I modified my plan and concluded to publish a booklet of modest size and at a modest price. I have endeavored to cover the ground in a concise manner and trust that what I have to say will be found of general interest and that it may prove to be of historical value to some extent. In Washington County when I was a boy I knew a man who did quite a business in making wine out of wild grapes gathered on the Elkhorn river. His selling price was a dollar a gallon and when one of the neighbors told him that he could well afford to sell it for less he said: "One gallon one dollar; one dollar one gallon. That is easy to remember. I am not much on figures and if I should charge 85 cents a gallon, for instance, I would get all balled up in making change." So with this publication: One booklet one dollar; one dollar one booklet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Omaha Illustrated: A History of the Pioneer Period and the Omaha of to-Day; Embracing Reliable Statistics and Information, With Over Two Hundred Illustrations, Including Prominent Buildings, Portraits and Sketches of Leading Citizens Through no fault of the publishers there have been a few unavoidable omissions in the matter ofillustrations, both portraits and buildings. Several prominent citizens whose portraits would have made the book more complete, were absent from the city until too late to admit of making engrav ings. The unfinished state of some few buildings, also, of which it was impossible to obtain even comprehensive drawings, rendered it impracticable to have satisfactory cuts made.
