Of these movements, however, we possess but an indirect record. The early inhabitants were too rude and savage; the early conquerors took to other paths of learning, but had no taste for history. It is thus that we are driven to the study of the map when we would learn anything of the remote past; and to found our historical edifice on the shifting basis of conjecture.
