Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of the Christian Church, Vol. 1: From Its Foundation to the End of the Third Century AT the time of Diocletian's persecution, when the churches were destroyed, the sacred books burned, and the Chris tians proscribed, or forced to apostasize, one of their number was quietly working away at the first history of Christianity. His was not a mind of the highest order, but he was patient, hard-working, and conscientious, and during many long years, he had collected materials for his contemplated book. He succeeded in saving these materials from the general shipwreck, and even in turning them to account. Thus Eusebius of Caesarea became the father of ecclesiastical history. And the first duty of those who take up the same task again - so long after, but in days not much less dark - is to recall his name and his incom parable services. But for his unrivalled diligence in search ing through those Palestinian libraries, where the learned Origen and Bishop Alexander had collected the whole Christian literature of early days, our knowledge of the first three centuries of the Church's life would be small indeed. We cannot of course but lament the destruction of these libraries, yet, thanks to him, and to the remark able fragments he preserved, we can appreciate in some measure what they were. Book Synopsis Early Christian Greek and Latin Literature by : Claudio Moreschini
Download or read book Early Christian Greek and Latin Literature written by Claudio Moreschini and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christian writings form a body of literature that has shaped Western culture as a whole, as Enrico Norelli and Claudio Moreschini demonstrate in this comprehensive book. The first six centuries of Christian experience impacted art and developed a philosophy that faced opposition, resolved internal conflicts, transposed itself into medieval civilization, and continues to influence culture today. Available for the first time in English, Early Christian Greek and Latin Literature highlights the special character of the gospel message, the nucleus of every Christian literary form. The earliest Christian works from the first through the fourth centuries are presented along with respected contemporary writings in the first volume. The second volume moves to the Golden Age of Christian literature. The major personalities of the time--Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, all writers of the highest rank--are matched with Greek-speaking authors such as Athanasius, the Cappadocians, and John Chrysostom, thinkers to whom present-day Christians turn once again for spiritual direction. This two-volume edition organizes the material in chronological order. Each segment's detailed discussion concludes with an up-to-date bibliography. It also includes a general bibliography and each volume includes an index of authors and anonymous works. Specialists in classics and medieval studies as well as general theologians, art historians, archaeologists, and other students of culture will find in this work an in-depth survey, quality scholarship, and an original approach.
Book Synopsis The Theology of the Early Christian Church, Vol. 2 by : James Bennett
Download or read book The Theology of the Early Christian Church, Vol. 2 written by James Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of the Early Christian Church, Vol. 2: Exhibited in Quotations From the Writers of the First Three Centuries, With Reflections The following course of Lectures being designed to afford the means of judging, by copious extracts, of the theology of the first ages of the church, the reflections which are interspersed may be regarded as mere helps to the formation of just conclusions, and may be adopted or rejected according to the degree of evidence which they present. As the selections are the result of an independent research in the works of each writer, the translations also were made at the same time, and are so far literal, perhaps, as to be often inelegant; but it is only by this more simple honest course that the cause of truth is to be maintained and advanced. On all great questions the quotations are sufficiently continuous to enable the reader to judge of the connexion; and where the extracts are brief, the references are so minute as to enable the scholar to verify the sense. When this depends on the rendering of a few words, these are given in a foot note; but to have furnished the originals of the whole would have required a second volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the First Three Centuries: Or, Notices of the Lives and Opinions of Some of the Early Fathers, With Special References to the Doctrine of the Trinity; Illustrating Its Late Origin and Gradual Formation The title prefixed to the present work sufficiently indicates its purpose. Of the articles contained in it, some have a more direct reference to the Opinions of Christian antiquity, respecting the Son and the Spirit, than others. In some, this topic is most largely dwelt upon; in one or two, it is but slightly no ticed in all, it receives more or less attention. As to the other matter contained in the volume, histor ical and biographical, or such as relates to the Opinions, usages, and social habits, which marked the early ages, and the merits and defects of the Fathers as critics and expositors, it is sufficient to say, that I have proceeded on the supposition, that its intro duction would enhance the value and interest of the work. Book Synopsis Early Christian Books in Egypt by : Roger S. Bagnall
Download or read book Early Christian Books in Egypt written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past hundred years, much has been written about the early editions of Christian texts discovered in the region that was once Roman Egypt. Scholars have cited these papyrus manuscripts--containing the Bible and other Christian works--as evidence of Christianity's presence in that historic area during the first three centuries AD. In Early Christian Books in Egypt, distinguished papyrologist Roger Bagnall shows that a great deal of this discussion and scholarship has been misdirected, biased, and at odds with the realities of the ancient world. Providing a detailed picture of the social, economic, and intellectual climate in which these manuscripts were written and circulated, he reveals that the number of Christian books from this period is likely fewer than previously believed. Bagnall explains why papyrus manuscripts have routinely been dated too early, how the role of Christians in the history of the codex has been misrepresented, and how the place of books in ancient society has been misunderstood. The author offers a realistic reappraisal of the number of Christians in Egypt during early Christianity, and provides a thorough picture of the economics of book production during the period in order to determine the number of Christian papyri likely to have existed. Supporting a more conservative approach to dating surviving papyri, Bagnall examines the dramatic consequences of these findings for the historical understanding of the Christian church in Egypt.
