Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Money and Prices: Being an Inquiry Into Their Relations From the Thirteenth Century to the Present Time In the years 1869 and 1870 I contributed a series of articles on The Labor Question to a German periodical, then published in New York, under the title, Die Neue Zeit. In these articles I held that prices were to be considered not as simple units, but as results of all the factors involved in the processes of production and distribution, including the action of government in the exercise of its political prerogative. I held, further, that the wage-earners' well-being, and that of all people with small incomes, depends on the extent in which the profit-charges on the several price-elements contribute towards swelling prices. Feudal prerogatives, privileges, monopolies of all sorts, protective duties, and taxes upon production, as well as all infringements of the exercise of the fullest measure of individual freedom, fell under this ban as a matter of course. I held that the preferences conveyed under these titles, either as inherited rights transmitted from a passing state of society, or as the acts of legislation for the furthering of special interests, raise values beyond the compensation received by the classes engaged in production and distribution, and thereby operate to depress the working classes; and that it must, therefore, be the aim of enlightened statesmanship to remove them, or reduce them to the smallest possible dimensions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, most money is credit money, created by commercial banks. While credit can finance innovation, excessive credit can lead to boom/bust cycles, such as the recent financial crisis. This highlights how the organization of our monetary system is crucial to stability. One way to achieve this is by separating the unit of account from the medium of exchange and in pre-modern Europe, such a separation existed. This new volume examines this idea of monetary separation and this history of monetary arrangements in the North and Baltic Seas region, from the Hanseatic League onwards. This book provides a theoretical analysis of four historical cases in the Baltic and North Seas region, with a view to examining evolution of monetary arrangements from a new monetary economics perspective. Since the objective exhange value of money (its purchasing power), reflects subjective individual valuations of commodities, the author assesses these historical cases by means of exchange rates. Using theories from new monetary economics , the book explores how the units of account and their media of exchange evolved as social conventions, and offers new insight into the separation between the two. Through this exploration, it puts forward that money is a social institution, a clearing device for the settlement of accounts, and so the value of money, or a separate unit of account, ultimately results from the size of its network of users. The History of Money and Monetary Arrangements offers a highly original new insight into monetary arrangments as an evolutionary process. It will be of great interest to an international audience of scholars and students, including those with an interest in economic history, evolutionary economics and new monetary economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern monetary economics has been significantly influenced by the knowledge and insight brought to the field by the work of Anna J. Schwartz, an economist whose career has spanned almost half a century. Her contributions evidence a broad expertise in international history and policy, and an ability to apply the results of her careful historical research to current issues and debates. Money in Historical Perspective is a collection of sixteen of her papers selected by Michael D. Bordo and Milton Friedman. Grouped into three sections, the essays constitute a number of Dr. Schwartz's most cited articles on the subject of monetary economics, many of which are no longer readily accessible. In the papers in part I, dating from 1947 to the present, Dr. Schwartz examines money and banking in the United States and the United Kingdom from a historical perspective. Her investigation of the historical evidence linking economic instability to erratic monetary behavior—this behavior itself a product of discretionary monetary policy—has led her to argue for the importance of stable money, and her writings on these issues over the last two decades form part II. The volume concludes with four recent articles on international monetary arrangements, including Dr. Schwartz's well-known work on the gold standard. This volume of classic essays by Anna Schwartz will be a useful addition to the libraries of scholars and students for its exemplary historical research and commentary on monetary systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics, cornerstone of politics Examining politics demands understanding of economics, as the economy always influences and constrains governmental decision-making. And, money is the key to learning economics. If the monetary system is well understood, it will clarify seemingly impenetrable economic events. The History of Money for Understanding Economics is an indispensable reference to decrypt economics, and it does so in an enthralling way, from antiquity to the present day, with readily accessible language. This book answers the following questions: How did money appear? What precisely is a bank? After circulating for centuries, why did gold coins vanish? Is there anything behind the value of paper banknotes? What is inflation? What is the IMF? Is the US trade deficit sustainable? A monetary solution, rather than a political one This book joins other groundbreaking interpretations of history that have underscored the influence of the management of money. It explains how monetary changes have precipitated events from the fall of the Roman Empire to World War II and beyond. Given the historical significance of monetary changes, could a monetary breakthrough shake up the exasperating inequalities? Indeed, Lannoye challenges the reader with a monetary innovation to finance a parallel (and green!) economy which could foster a more equitable distribution of wealth.

Book excerpt: In a time before large banking systems, and with paper money just in its infancy, money during the Renaissance meant coinage (mainly gold and silver) and local credit systems. These monetary forms had a significant influence on the ways in which money was understood throughout the period, and shaped discussions on such topics as the meaning of monetary value, the economic, political, religious, and aesthetic uses of coinage, the moral implications of usury and credit systems, and the importance of reputation, both at the state and individual levels. Crucial to the transformation of ideas about money in the period was the growing awareness that the individuals, up to and including the monarch, were powerless to overcome the market forces that determined value and directed the movement of goods and money. Drawing upon a wealth of visual and textual sources, A Cultural History of Money in the Renaissance presents essays that examine key cultural case studies of the period on the themes of technologies, ideas, ritual and religion, the everyday, art and representation, interpretation, and the issues of the age.

Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to explain to the layperson what contemporary economics is about. It starts on the assumption that most economics is just refined common sense and clearly explains the key ideas associated with each issue. All the main topics of academic economics are considered: the theory of individual choice, the labour market, the competition between firms, international trade, economic growth, the stock market, unemployment, and money. The general principles are sketched first without maths or diagrams, and then discussed in the context of topical problems such as the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, the lack of development in the third-world countries, the contrast between market forces and the protection of the environment, showing how economics is not necessarily a dry academic pursuit.

Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize–winning economist explains how value is created, and how that affects everything from your paycheck to global markets. In this “lively, enlightening introduction to monetary history” (Kirkus Reviews), one of the leading figures of the Chicago school of economics that rejected the theories of John Maynard Keynes offers a journey through history to illustrate the importance of understanding monetary economics, and how monetary theory can ignite or deepen inflation. With anecdotes revealing the far-reaching consequences of seemingly minor events—for example, how two obscure Scottish chemists destroyed the presidential prospects of William Jennings Bryan, and how FDR’s domestic politics helped communism triumph in China—as well as plain-English explanations of what the monetary system in the United States means for your personal finances and for everyone from the small business owner on Main Street to the banker on Wall Street, Money Mischief is an enlightening read from the author of Capitalism and Freedom and Free to Choose, who was called “the most influential economist of the second half of the twentieth century” by the Economist.
