Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most controversial topics in the news is the outsourcing of American jobs to other countries. Outsourced jobs have extended well beyond the manufacturing sector to include white-collar professionals, particularly in information technology, financial services, and customer service. Outsourcing America reveals just how much outsourcing is taking place, what its impact has been and will continue to be, and what can be done about the loss of jobs. More than an exposé, Outsourcing America shows how offshoring is part of the historical economic shift toward globalism and free trade, and demonstrates its impact on individual lives and communities. In addition, the book now features a new chapter on immigration policies and outsourcing, and advice on how individuals can avoid becoming victims of outsourcing. The authors discuss policies that countries like India and China use to attract U.S. industries, and they offer frank recommendations that business and political leaders must consider in order to confront this crisis—and bring more high-paying jobs back to the U.S.A.

Book excerpt: This is the 2nd book in my Business Series. With dozens of years experience in effective staffing, this has become a passion. I will teach you how to write ads to attract prospective employees and advertise for the same. At times this can be a full time position by itself. Hiring and firing is something you look forward to or dread depending on the situation. Each time you hire someone, you are giving a time commitment to them and yourself. When you are in the wonderful position of hiring because of rapid growth, you will have effectively created new problems with training, managing, and retaining good employees. Unfortunately, there are times that you must move in a different direction as well. I have had to let people go for many reasons. Could be just not a good fit, downsizing, or the employee is lazy to your standard. Hiring is about finding the person for a position that you are in need of. This could be a service, skill, labor, or contracted work. I believe in finding people that bring something new and out of the box to any team I am assembling. As you read on we will talk about simple solutions and costly mistakes I have made. We all make mistakes. It is cheaper to learn from others who made mistakes than it is to learn them yourself. Mistakes will still be made, but hopefully this short read will allow you to make a few less while growing your business. I have hired and let go of employees in more than a dozen states, From Utah out west, to, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Missouri in the mid-west to Pennsylvania, Florida, Massachusetts and Maryland to name a few on the east coast. Experience matters more now than ever. Costly hiring mistakes can be enough to close a business. I hope this knowledge finds you well and serves you better.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outsourcing has become a commonplace practice thanks to the growth of broadband Internet connections, improved shipping, open borders, increasing education, and the spread of English as a common language of business. It’s hard to find a company that doesn’t outsource at least some small part of their business. Companies that have moved jobs overseas include household names such as MCI, Verizon, Delta Airlines, Microsoft, Citigroup, Hewlett Packard, General Electric, Sprint, AT&T, and IBM. Outsourcing is not just for the private sector, however. Government agencies in forty states and Washington, DC, use foreign workers to handle their customer service needs. This can lead to job loss for many American workers and downturns in local economies. Outsourcing of U.S. jobs is not necessarily the problem, however, and other countries’ hard workers are not the enemy. If the United States is to create jobs, services, and products that are so specialized, advanced, high-quality, and unique that they can be supplied by no other nation, it must invest in its citizens. It is innovation, skill, and know-how that have allowed the United States to become a world leader over the past hundred years. If it hopes to stay in front of the global pack, its commitment to fostering an educated, intelligent, hard-working, and creative citizenry must not slacken, but in fact be strengthened.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OUTSOURCING IS THE BAD BOY OF BUSINESS, blamed for poor quality, unethical salaries, inhumane conditions, and even the ruination of industrialized economies. Yet, Apple, Google, JP Morgan, and almost every Fortune 500 company outsources, and the industry is growing at breakneck speed. Hiring an offshore team can save a company 70% on its staffing costs and offer previously unimaginable access to a near-infinite pool of 2 billion highly qualified professionals. It's a game changing proposition for businesses. Globalization and technology are connecting the world's 8 billion people into one single online economy. For three decades, the outsourcing industry was a sleeping giant, generating $200 billion annually, and employing tens of millions of people, but mostly invisible to the traditional economy. Now, the giant is waking. Only recently has outsourcing become an option for small and medium-sized businesses. Previously, due to technological limitations, it was the exclusive domain of the big multinational conglomerates. Many smaller businesses have now heard of offshoring, but few really understand its full potential or how it can be applied to their company. What does outsourcing really mean for the typical business, entrepreneur, or manager? Should they embrace this movement or run from it? Is outsourcing really the devil incarnate or a misunderstood force for good? Will it cause the downfall of economic stability in the West or catalyze humanity's next step-change in prosperity and innovation? Inside Outsourcing takes a deep dive into the origin of outsourcing, its current state, and likely future. It explores the high-level concept, drills down into the mechanics, offers clear insights for its practical application, and provides actionable advice for businesses of all sizes exploring its potential. This book is a must-read if you don't want to miss this game-changing opportunity.

Book excerpt: Examining the consequences of the outsourcing of public services, this book explores the transformation of working conditions, employment relations and the role of the state under marketisation strain. It places these developments in a wider framework that incorporates the legacy of the national models of public administration and employment relations regimes in the public sector. Adopting a comparative perspective by focusing on Italy, Denmark and Britain, the author investigates and questions the influential interpretation of a spreading neo-liberal trajectory in public service working conditions and employment relations, and reveals significant diversity across countries mediated by national institutional configurations. Discussing the interplay between the austerity agenda in the aftermath of the financial crisis and the swelling of outsourcing practices in public services, this book responds to the scholarly call for an integrated approach towards institutions and actors. A valuable read for researchers examining human resource management, labour studies and public administration, this book provides a comprehensive overview of employment relations in outsourced public services.

Book excerpt: The nature, extent, and likely future of outsourcing in the United Kingdom was examined through an extensive literature review and interviews with small numbers of local authorities, companies, and contractors. Despite the limited data available, it appeared that outsourcing is concentrated in ancillary activities and is relatively marginal, both as a proportion of the work force and in terms of its organizational impact. Among the reasons cited for outsourcing were the following: cost, improved service, desire to focus on core business and reduce exposure, and flexibility to meet fluctuating supply and demand. The problems encountered by organizations resorting to outsourcing have stemmed from choosing outsourcing for the wrong reasons and preparing for it poorly. The following were identified as alternatives to outsourcing: changing the organization's overall shape/size; introducing more flexible work arrangements; and altering the means of structuring service provision. Special attention was paid to the best ways of planning and managing outsourcing, use of outsourcing by local governments, and effects of outsourcing on employees. It was concluded that continued pressures to reduce costs and maximize productivity will likely mean the continuation of partial and selective outsourcing, with clients becoming more sophisticated and demanding in what they expect from contractors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a sociological account of the process by which companies instituted and continue to institute outsourcing in their organization. Drawing on qualitative data, it examines the ways in which internal outsourcing in the information technologies and human resources professions negatively affects workers, their work conditions, and working relationships. With attention to the deleterious influence of outsourcing on relationships and the strong tendency of market organisations to produce social conflict in interactions – itself a considerable ‘transaction cost’ – the author challenges both the ideology that markets, rather than hierarchies, produce more efficient and less costly economic outcomes for companies, and the idea that outsourcing generates benefits for professional workers in the form of greater opportunity. A demonstration of the social conflict created between employees working for two separate, proprietary companies, Working Lives and in-House Outsourcing will be of interest to scholars with interests in the sociology of work and organizations and the sociology of professions, as well as those working in the fields of business management and human resources.

Book excerpt: A detailed look at the evolution of employment and its far-reaching implications Lead the Work takes an incisive look at the evolving nature of work, and how it's affecting management and productivity at the organizational level. Where getting things done once meant assigning it to an employee, today's leaders are increasingly at risk if they fail to recognize that talent can float into and out of an organization. Long-term employment has given way to medium- or short-term employment, marking the first step in severing the bond that once fixed an individual inside an organization. Getting work done by means other than an employee was once considered a fringe event, but now leading organizations are accepting and taking advantage of the notion that talent has shown itself to be mutable. This book explores this phenomenon in detail and provides a new roadmap to help managers navigate this new environment. The workplace has undergone many changes over the years, but the emerging trend away from traditional employment represents a massive shift that has profound implications for the business model of every organization, large or small. This book describes how management is changing, and how managers must adapt to survive. Examine the dispersed organization and the changing nature of employment Learn how work is becoming impermanent and individualized Find new strategies for managing and leading Get up to speed on the decision science for the new era Workplaces evolve like biological beings; only the strong survive, and it's the competitive edge that ensures continued success. Lead the Work describes the new landscape, and shows you how to adapt and thrive.
