Neutrinos of cosmic origin are excellent messengers exploring astronomy, cosmology and particle physics, for they are tiny, neutral and weakly-interacting, which leads to undeflected and nearly unscathed travel across the Universe to Earth from their sources. They are an important piece in solving several significant open questions in physics such as the mystery of cosmic ray accelerators, as high-energy cosmic neutrinos play the role of a smoking-gun signal of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays; and the nature of dark matter as neutrinos can be produced in dark matter annihilation or decay, providing an indirect signature. The IceCube experiment discovered TeV-PeV neutrinos of astrophysical origin with an energy flux comparable to that of gamma rays and cosmic rays. One mission that comes afterwards is to identify where those neutrinos come from and how they are produced. In this dissertation, I will discuss the search for their astrophysical sources, emphasizing the efforts to identify neutrino sources in our Galaxy with IceCube data, focusing on pulsar wind nebulae and X-ray binaries. Like atmospheric neutrinos, the beam of cosmic neutrinos provides us with excellent opportunities to study physics beyond the standard model, e.g. dark matter annihilation and decay. Indirect searches of dark matter will be discussed with a focus on a new computation of neutrino signals from dark matter accumulated in multiple celestial environments.

Book excerpt: IceCube's discovery of cosmic neutrinos offers a unique view of our universe and provides powerful insights into some of the most energetic and enigmatic objects in the cosmos. Cosmic neutrinos reveal an unobstructed view at wavelengths where the universe is opaque to photons. The existence of the cosmic-neutrino flux has challenged our understanding of the universe. It is somewhat counterintuitive that the most surprising property of the observed flux is its magnitude. An immediate inference from the large neutrino flux observed by IceCube, which is predominantly extragalactic in origin, is that the total energy density of neutrinos in the high-energy universe is similar to that of photons. The matching energy densities of the extragalactic gamma-ray flux detected by Fermi and the high-energy neutrino flux measured by IceCube suggest the possibility of a common origin. Therefore, rather than detecting some exotic sources, it looks more likely that IceCube observes the same universe as astronomers do. The finding implies that a large fraction of the energy in the non-thermal universe originates in hadronic processes, indicating a larger level than previously thought. The focus of this dissertation is on identifying the sources of high-energy cosmic neutrinos observed in IceCube. Moreover, with the lack of confirmation to date of any source (type of sources) as the dominant contributor to the observed neutrino flux, we have studied prospects for observing different sources in IceCube by considering both transient and steady sources in the sky. Finally, we introduce new techniques to study the strength of neutrino dark matter interactions with the properties of high-energy cosmic neutrinos.

Potential sources of cosmic neutrinos are, for example, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) or Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). In the case of hadronic cosmic rays acceleration, the production of neutrinos is possibly accompanied by high-energy gamma-ray emissions. The search for coincidences between high-energy neutrinos detected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope and gamma-rays detected by the HAWC gamma-ray observatory is presented. Searching in a particular time window significantly reduces the background noise in the neutrino data and thus increases the discovery potential. In this thesis, the results of a search for neutrinos detected in correlation with a gamma-ray signal from two particular AGNs, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501, are presented. As the blazars closest to Earth, they are excellent sources for testing the blazar-neutrino connection scenario, especially during the increase of their activities (flares) in which the search for neutrinos may have a higher detection probability.

Some of the radiation is produced in stars and galaxies, and some is cosmological background radiation, a relic from the history of cosmic evolution. Among all this radiation, the most energetic are cosmic ray particles: nucleons, nuclei, and even extremely energetic gamma rays. There are some observational facts about cosmic rays to give suggestions on their origin. The most important one among them is that the energy spectrum of high energy cosmic rays above 10 GeV (where the magnetic field of the sun is no longer a concern) is well represented by a power law form. This indicates cosmic ray particles are products of non-thermal processes. Their energy extends over more than 13 decades from 107 eV up to 1020 eV. In terms of its structure, the spectrum can be divided into three regions: two 'knees' and one 'ankle'. The first 'knee' appears around 3×1015 eV where the spectral power law index changes from -2.7 to -3.0. The second 'knee' is somewhere between 1017 eV and 1018 eV where the spectral slope changes from -3.0 to around -3.3. The 'ankle' is seen at or after 3×1018 eV. Above that energy the spectral slope is around -2.7, but with a large uncertainty because of poor statistics and resolution. This book deals with the final and most energetic population, the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs).
