Book excerpt: The peace we long for begins with coming to the end of ourselves. There are inescapable aspects of life we are all marked by. We have less control than we want, more anxiety than we're comfortable with and just enough insecurity to continually remind us of our shortcomings. To experience these things is to be human. We aren't superheroes and invincibility isn't an option. But humility is. Whether we've incorrectly defined it or underestimated its relevance to our daily life, humility is the missing piece for the security, strength and confidence we all want. It's time to stop trying so hard to avoid our limitations or overcompensate for them. God has better for us and it begins with bowing low in humility. With relatable stories, practical wisdom and biblical theology broken down into digestible takeaways, The Hidden Peace by Dr. Joel Muddamalle will help you: Overcome the fear of being "found out" or looking like a fraud by realizing God's intent for shortcomings and weaknesses. Walk through hurtful situations in the most God-honoring way by gaining a true understanding of biblical humility. Answer the question "why do bad things happen to good people?" by learning a perspective shift that will change how you process suffering. Know confidently that you're living with purpose and being used by God through seven ways to practically live like Him today. Be led by the biblical definition of self-awareness so you can experience the unexpected ways it brings safety and security to your life. Stop believing the lie that theology is out of touch or too difficult to comprehend as Joel shows you how to dig into scripture and study it yourself. Weakness is not your enemy. Planted in the soil of humility, weakness becomes a means to gaining more strength and more peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you desire to know the truth? There are a lot of misconceptions about the Bible. Lies are often passed down from generation to generation, manipulating the word of God. The only way to really and truly gain a full understanding of the Bible is by intensely studying it with great aspiration. Some may be fine with not knowing the complete truth, or pretending to be a sold out Christian, and not honestly knowing what Gods word says about many issues faced on a daily basis. Individuals may be fine displaying that tag that reads, Jesus is my co-pilot on the front of their car. In all reality, Jesus is the pilot; he operates the vehicle that drives us though life. Most of us are driving underage and need some parental guidance. God is our father and wants to keep us on the right path by nurturing us with his unique and supernatural word, The Bible. Jesus gives us the freedom to run to him or away from him. Hidden Truths challenges you to consider the truth and what it entails. Leighton directly approaches the truth in a daring way that reveals Jesus love for you and causes you to re-evaluate your relationship with Jesus. Leighton urges you to redevelop principles that you have been practicing the wrong way. The only right way to do things is by following Gods holy word.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html The goal of the Christian life is to acquire the Holy Spirit, in communion with God. Communion with God is the essence of our salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord. /// The path to salvation is the fulfillment of the commandments of God, life in Christ, or, what is the same, the Christian pious, virtuous life. /// The Christian virtuous life of every Christian has two essential aspects: the struggle against tempting evil (the struggle against sinful passions and vices) and the acquisition of Christian virtues. /// This book is devoted to these vital issues - the fight against the main sinful passions (vices) and the acquisition of basic Christian virtues. /// This far from finished work arose on the basis of conversations that the author, acting as a mentor, conducted with students of the seminary. These conversations have been completed and expanded, brought into the system. /// Many books have been written on the fight against passions and on Christian virtues by people experienced in the spiritual life under the guidance of Sts. fathers. There are also extensive scientific works from the field of asceticism. /// This same book is not a scientific treatise or study; rather, it is a systematized collection of patristic thoughts on individual, most important, issues of active Christian life, which has, mainly, a moral and edifying purpose. The author in his work sought to present the patristic teaching and experience in a form that is understandable and intelligible to the modern reader and to show their necessary applicability in the life of every Christian, for the commandments of God and the laws of spiritual life are common to all Christians, no matter what way of life and ascetic labor they pursue. /// In particular, the author had in mind that the book would serve as a manual for students of the seminary, candidates for the priesthood, so that they could get acquainted with the patristic teaching on this issue in an assembled form. Acquaintance of the candidate of the priesthood with the questions of Christian asceticism according to the teaching and experience of Sts. fathers and ascetics is of great importance for their future pastoral activity. /// The second and immediate goal of writing this work was also one’s own benefit: “in order to move oneself to correction, to the denunciation of one’s poor soul, so that, although being ashamed of words,” as St. John of the Ladder, - began to work having not yet acquired any good deed, but only words . And Rev. Nilus of Sinai points out that “he who does not do good should speak of good things, so that, being ashamed of words, he begins deeds” 2 . /// The book is divided into two parts. The first part gives general concepts about sin, sinful passions and self-love as the source of all sin and vice. Then a strategic teaching is presented about each of the main passions separately: about pride and vanity, about gluttony and fornication and the fight against them, about greed and anger, about envy, slander and condemnation, and, finally, about sinful sadness and despondency. /// The second part is devoted to the study of the main Christian virtues: love, humility, meekness, temperance and chastity - those virtues that a Christian needs to acquire in the active eradication of the above main passions. /// Therefore, when studying chapters, for example, on carnal passions (gluttony and fornication), it is useful to follow this (from the 2nd part) to assimilate the patristic teaching about the main eradicators of these passions - the virtues of temperance and chastity. When studying the issue of struggle with self-love, pride, greed and envy, one should follow this by studying the patristic teaching on love and humility. Anger has its opposite in meekness, etc.

Book excerpt: A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK Named a Best Book Pick of 2021 by Harper’s Bazaar and Real Simple Named a Most Anticipated Book of Fall by People, Essence, New York Post, PopSugar, New York Newsday, Entertainment Weekly, Town & Country, Bustle, Fortune, and Book Riot Told from alternating perspectives, this “propulsive, deeply felt tale of race and friendship” (People) follows two women, one Black and one white, whose friendship is indelibly altered by a tragic event. Jen and Riley have been best friends since kindergarten. As adults, they remain as close as sisters, though their lives have taken different directions. Jen married young, and after years of trying, is finally pregnant. Riley pursued her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist and is poised to become one of the first Black female anchors of the top news channel in their hometown of Philadelphia. But the deep bond they share is severely tested when Jen’s husband, a city police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed Black teenager. Six months pregnant, Jen is in freefall as her future, her husband’s freedom, and her friendship with Riley are thrown into uncertainty. Covering this career-making story, Riley wrestles with the implications of this tragic incident for her Black community, her ambitions, and her relationship with her lifelong friend. Like Tayari Jones’s An American Marriage and Jodi Picoult’s Small Great Things, We Are Not Like Them takes “us to uncomfortable places—in the best possible way—while capturing so much of what we are all thinking and feeling about race. A sharp, timely, and soul-satisfying novel” (Emily Giffin, New York Times bestselling author) that is both a powerful conversation starter and a celebration of the enduring power of friendship.

Book excerpt: Volume 42 Sermons 2446-2497 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.

Book excerpt: Nalton takes his text from Jer. 13:27, “I have seen your adulteries and your neighings, the lewdness of your whoredom, and your abominations on the hills in the fields: Woe unto you, O Jerusalem, will you not be made clean? When shall it once be?” This exhortation was written and preached to urge and promote the work of reformation for those who profess to be covenanters and need God’s help in making the work of Christ in biblical reform a reality. He covers three important doctrines: Doctrine 1: God pays precise and special attention to all the sins and abominations of a people in covenant with Him. Doctrine 2: These sins and abominations provoke Him to express His anger in terrifying threats. Doctrine 3: Those terrifying threats pronounced against a people call for immediate repentance and reformation. After covering these main parts to the treatise, he asks, but how, or by what means may the work of reformation be carried on, both in public and private, in Church and State, in our hearts and houses? He answers this with various motives and helps in the means which God has blessed his people. To be humbled for previous failures, to reflect on our vows to God, to be more involved in reformation in our church and family, to focus on unity for the cause of God and the Gospel, and to cultivate a heart ignited with a burning love for Christ and a passionate zeal for His honor and the advancement of the work of Reformation. Annexed to this work is a sermon by Richard Greenham (1531-1594) called Sweet Comfort for an Afflicted Conscience on Proverbs 18:14.

But despite the immense importance of Ali, there is a dearth of literature in Western languages about his life and thought. This book - the first serious engagement in English with the intellectual principles underpinning his teachings - is therefore a welcome and valuable addition to the sources available. It consists of three parts. Part one introduces the person of Ali in a general manner, and focuses particularly on the spiritual and ethical content of his teachings. Part two evaluates Ali's 'sacred conception of justice'. Part three addresses the theme of spiritual realization through the remembrance of God, the central mystical practice of the Sufis. Justice and Remembrance will be of great value to students and scholars of Islamic thought, as well as to those interested in the relationship between spirituality and ethics.

Vianney (born Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney), was a French Catholic priest who is venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint John Vianney and as the patron saint of parish priests. He is often referred to as the "Curé d'Ars" (i.e. the parish priest of Ars), and is internationally known for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish in Ars, France, because of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings.
