The results revealed that highly significant values were found in line x tester interaction for all the traits except the character days taken to 50% maturity. The estimates of SCA variance was noticed higher than GCA variance in all the recorded traits.The significant potence ratio were explained that the transformation of desirable gene in all the recorded traits of genotypes in dominance type of gene action for the development of hybrids or varieties in Brassica napus."

(AACC, 2n = 38) canola is one of the most important crop in Canada, widely grown in the Prairie Provinces Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Presence of genetic diversity in breeding material is pre-requisite for developing new cultivars with desirable traits as well as for progress in breeding. The narrow genetic diversity in spring B. napus canola can be broadened by enriching its C-genome with the C-genome of progenitor species Brassica oleracea L. The present research was undertaken to study the feasibility of introgressing allelic diversity from B. oleracea var. alboglabra and B. oleracea var. botrytis into Canadian spring B. napus canola for the improvement of this crop. For this, Brassica napus × B. oleracea interspecific crosses were made and the F1's were either self-pollinated for F2 or backcrossed to the B. napus parent for BC1 seeds. The F2- and BC1-derived populations were subjected to self-pollination with selection in each generation for different agronomic and seed quality traits including erucic acid and glucosinolate contents from where F8 and BC1F7 families were developed. The interspecific cross derived plants were analysed by a flow cytometer to estimate their approximate chromosome number; while the extent of genetic diversity introgressed from B. oleracea into these plants was assessed by the use of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Plant fertility was low in early generation populations. However, inbreeding with selection for fertile plants resulted in B. napus plants in advanced generation populations. Silique size and number of seeds per silique in many of the advanced generation plants was comparable to the B. napus parent. Segregation for erucic acid and glucosinolate contents in the populations derived from this interspecific cross involved only the C-genome alleles; this enabled efficient selection of canola quality plants from both F2- and BC1-derived populations. Molecular marker analysis showed that the plants derived from both F2 and BC1 are genetically distinct from the B. napus parent; this demonstrated the feasibility of introgressing allelic diversity from B. oleracea var. alboglabra and B. oleracea var. botrytis into spring B. napus canola.

Hybrid B. napus cultivars compose the majority of the market due to their seed yield and agronomic quality. It is important to attempt to predict high-yielding parental combinations in order to conserve resources during experimental hybrid evaluation. Genetic distance between parents has been implicated in producing high-yielding hybrids and is used as one criteria for determining parental combinations.In the current study, the genetic distance between high erucic acid rapeseed (HEAR) genotypes of B. napus was established using both phenotypic and genotypic criteria. Phenotypic criteria took the form of nine agronomic and seed quality traits gathered from 318 distinct B. napus genotypes over the 2013 and 2014 field seasons in Southern Manitoba. Genotypic criteria took the form of either 291,782 SNP markers identified in 231 distinct B. napus genotypes using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) or 230 polymorphic sequence-related amplified polymoprhism (SRAP) markers identified in 160 B. napus genotypes. The genetic distance between available pollinators and a single male-sterile female was established using each set of criteria in an attempt to correlate genetic distance with hybrid yield. Regression analysis was conducted with yield data from hybrid genotypes gathered from 37 field sites from 2011-2014. Using the phenotypic-derived genetic distance, a significant correlation between genetic distance and hybrid yield was uncovered explaining either 22 % or 42 % of the variation in hybrid yield depending upon whether hybrids were grown at three or more, or five or more sites in the analysis, respectively. No significant link was found between GBS or SRAP-derived genetic distance and hybrid yield. These results provide evidence that that phenotypic criteria can be used to establish genetic distance with utility in the selection of high-yielding hybrid genotypes.

The family contains several cultivated species, including radish, rocket, watercress, wasabi and horseradish, in addition to the vegetable and oil crops of the Brassica genus. There are numerous further species with great potential for exploitation in 21st century agriculture, particularly as sources of bioactive chemicals. These opportunities are reviewed, in the context of the Brassicaceae in agriculture. More detailed descriptions are provided of the genetics of the cultivated Brassica crops, including both the species producing most of the brassica vegetable crops (B. rapa and B. oleracea) and the principal species producing oilseed crops (B. napus and B. juncea). The Brassicaceae also include important “model” plant species. Most prominent is Arabidopsis thaliana, the first plant species to have its genome sequenced. Natural genetic variation is reviewed for A. thaliana, as are the genetics of the closely related A. lyrata and of the genus Capsella. Self incompatibility is widespread in the Brassicaceae, and this subject is reviewed. Interest arising from both the commercial value of crop species of the Brassicaceae and the importance of Arabidopsis thaliana as a model species, has led to the development of numerous resources to support research. These are reviewed, including germplasm and genomic library resources, and resources for reverse genetics, metabolomics, bioinformatics and transformation. Molecular studies of the genomes of species of the Brassicaceae revealed extensive genome duplication, indicative of multiple polyploidy events during evolution. In some species, such as Brassica napus, there is evidence of multiple rounds of polyploidy during its relatively recent evolution, thus the Brassicaceae represent an excellent model system for the study of the impacts of polyploidy and the subsequent process of diploidisation, whereby the genome stabilises. Sequence-level characterization of the genomes of Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica rapa are presented, along with summaries of comparative studies conducted at both linkage map and sequence level, and analysis of the structural and functional evolution of resynthesised polyploids, along with a description of the phylogeny and karyotype evolution of the Brassicaceae. Finally, some perspectives of the editors are presented. These focus upon the Brassicaceae species as models for studying genome evolution following polyploidy, the impact of advances in genome sequencing technology, prospects for future transcriptome analysis and upcoming model systems.
