Book excerpt: One of the world's most remarkable outdoor art treasures lies hidden in plain sight along Chicago's Lake Michigan shoreline. For most of its length it is lined with thousands of works of art -- carvings in stone, many of them spectacular, most by anonymous creators, and almost none of them noticed by the millions of people who enjoy the city's unobstructed shore. This book documents some of the best of the carvings with a rich selection of photos, and it tells the story of the carvings, the carvers and the lakefront where they worked.

Download or read book Ruth Bernhard:The Eternal Body written by and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over half a century, acclaimed photographer Ruth Bernhard has worked to "simplify, isolate, and give emphasis to form with greatest clarity" in her radiant photographs of the female nude. Now, with Chronicle Books' timely reissue of her best-selling volume, The Eternal Body, Bernhard's most evocative images are once again available in a superb collection, complete with an insightfill text, that pays tribute to a living legend. Hauntingly sensual yet classically reserved, the book's ethereal duotone photographs appear to be illuminated from within so that even the simplest lines of the human form -- a draped torso, a curved neck, an angled limb -- take on a complexity not often seen in work of this kind. A master artist whose technical prowess places her among the ranks of the greatest photographers of our time, Ruth Bernhard has created a masterpiece of expression and sensitivity in The Eternal Body.

Book Synopsis The Creative Circuit by : K. G. Subramanyan
Download or read book The Creative Circuit written by K. G. Subramanyan and published by Seagull Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series of five lectures revolves around certain issues relating to modern art, particularly modern Indian art. The attempt is to open up the issues and see them in a broader perspective, hoping that any discussion this may elicit will enlarge our understanding of the modern art situation such as modernity, eclecticism, nostalgia which have entered our vocabulary, and which lends themselves to reinterpretation today. Some of the questions addressed are as follows: What concept does a modern artist or critic have of current art activity? How does a modern artist react to his environment and cultural inheritance? Under what perceptions or illusions or emotional urges does he work? And what general norms of achievement can we think of in the highly heterogeneous art scene of today? K. G. Subramanyan draws upon his considerable experience as a practising artist and theoritician to present a series of probing discussions which engage with contemporary art concerns from a modern Indian perspective. The Living Tradition: K. G. Subramanyan studies the attempts of several thinkers and artists in the last century including Havell, Coomaraswamy, Okakura, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose and Rabindranath Tagore to identify, interpret or steer clear of an Indian artistic tradition, to show how some of them had defined a growth structure of several levels of activity interacting with each other at one time, as well as a variable succession of these over time.

Book Synopsis The Lynching of Cleo Wright by : Dominic J. CapeciJr.
Download or read book The Lynching of Cleo Wright written by Dominic J. CapeciJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 20, 1942, black oil mill worker Cleo Wright assaulted a white woman in her home and nearly killed the first police officer who tried to arrest him. An angry mob then hauled Wright out of jail and dragged him through the streets of Sikeston, Missouri, before burning him alive. Wright's death was, unfortunately, not unique in American history, but what his death meant in the larger context of life in the United States in the twentieth-century is an important and compelling story. After the lynching, the U.S. Justice Department was forced to become involved in civil rights concerns for the first time, provoking a national reaction to violence on the home front at a time when the country was battling for democracy in Europe. Dominic Capeci unravels the tragic story of Wright's life on several stages, showing how these acts of violence were indicative not only of racial tension but the clash of the traditional and the modern brought about by the war. Capeci draws from a wide range of archival sources and personal interviews with the participants and spectators to draw vivid portraits of Wright, his victims, law-enforcement officials, and members of the lynch mob. He places Wright in the larger context of southern racial violence and shows the significance of his death in local, state, and national history during the most important crisis of the twentieth-century.
