Book excerpt: Based on extensive exploration in Chinese classics, this paper finds a fresh new perspective for KM philosophy especially in pyramid issue: The primary role in knowledge ontology should be consciousness rather than IT aspects, in which the former determines the perceived results such as data, information, knowledge or wisdom. With this domination, this paper presents a novel hierarchy that best solves the quarrel in classic pyramid, and illustrates the crucial issue of wisdom — the finding of a continuous birth and death metabolic cyclic nature called anitya in knowledge. Further, a three layer wisdom hierarchy is suggested based on di®erent levels of understandings: traditional layer, dialect layer and ultimate layer. This paper argues that wisdom should depend on internal concentration while IT serves as an exterior role and never replaces the inner one. Meanwhile, the paper also doubts the classic definition of knowledge and suggests a novel one.

Book excerpt: Humans have always been influenced by natural landscapes, and always will be—even as we create ever-larger cities and our developments fundamentally change the nature of the earth around us. In Human Ecology, noted city planner and landscape architect Frederick Steiner encourages us to consider how human cultures have been shaped by natural forces, and how we might use this understanding to contribute to a future where both nature and people thrive. Human ecology is the study of the interrelationships between humans and their environment, drawing on diverse fields from biology and geography to sociology, engineering, and architecture. Steiner admirably synthesizes these perspectives through the lens of landscape architecture, a discipline that requires its practitioners to consciously connect humans and their environments. After laying out eight principles for understanding human ecology, the book’s chapters build from the smallest scale of connection—our homes—and expand to community scales, regions, nations, and, ultimately, examine global relationships between people and nature. In this age of climate change, a new approach to planning and design is required to envision a livable future. Human Ecology provides architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners—and students in those fields— with timeless principles for new, creative thinking about how their work can shape a vibrant, resilient future for ourselves and our planet.

Kerry but the ship, The Aud, was intercepted by the British Navy? Did you know that there was a plan to smuggle Marie Antoinette from France and away from Madame Guillotine to Dingle, that the Fasnet Rock off the south coast is known as the 'tear drop of Ireland' and that Maureen O'Hara's husband was a flying boat pilot who regularly flew into the flying boat station at Foynes? And did you know that Martello towers were built along the western seaboard during the Napoleonic Wars in case Napoleon tried to invade Great Britain via 'the back door'? This fact-packed little book is full of all sorts of information that will surprise even those who think they know the towns and villages along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Book excerpt: Grounded in solid theory with new field-tested classroom activities, the fourth edition of Critical Encounters in Secondary English continues to help teachers integrate the lenses of contemporary literary theory into practices that have always defined good pedagogy. The most significant change for this edition is the addition of Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical lens. CRT offers teachers fresh opportunities for interdisciplinary planning and teaching, as it lends itself to lessons that encompass a variety of disciplines such as history, sociology, psychology, and science. As with the previous edition, each chapter concludes with a list of suggested nonfiction pieces that work well for the particular lens under discussion. This popular text provides a comprehensive approach to incorporating nonfiction and informational texts into the literature classroom with new and revised classroom activities appropriate for today’s students. Book Features: Helps both pre- and inservice ELA teachers introduce contemporary literary theory into their classrooms.Offers lucid and accessible explications of contemporary literary theory.Provides dozens of innovative and field-tested classroom activities.Tackles the thorny issue of Critical Race Theory in helpful and practical ways. Praise for the Third Edition “What a smart and useful book! It provides teachers with a wealth of knowledge and material to help their students develop critical perspective and suppleness of thought.” —Mike Rose, University of California, Los Angeles “This Third Edition proves that Appleman still has her hand on the pulse of the rapidly changing landscape of education.” —Ernest Morrell, Teachers College, Columbia University “This new edition of Deborah Appleman’s now classic book demonstrates even more dramatically than previously how the critical theories she so skillfully teaches serve not only as lenses for the reading of literature, but as tools for discovering, interrogating, and challenging injustice, hypocrisy, and the hidden power relations that students are likely to encounter.” —Sheridan Blau, Teachers College, Columbia University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the first respect, I will only remind you of the absolute philosophical tragedy, of Goethe's Faust, in which, on the one hand, the lack of satisfaction in science, on the other hand, the liveliness of world life and earthly enjoyment, in general, the tragically attempted mediation of subjective knowledge and striving with the absolute, in its essence and appearance, gives a breadth of content that no other dramatic poet has dared to encompass in one and the same work before." - Hegel, Lectures on Aesthetics A new 2023 translation into modern American English of Goethe's 1808 & 1831 Faust, unabridged containing parts I and II. This literal translation favors accuracy to provide the reader with the original meaning as best as possible. This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a Timeline of Goethe’s Life & Works and a Glossary of Philosophic Terminology used by Goethe. Composed over 60 years, Faust is Goethe's magnum opus, one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written. The play tells the story of Faust, a disillusioned scholar who makes a pact with the devil, Mephistopheles, in search of unlimited knowledge and boundless experience. Through Faust's journey, Goethe explores themes of ambition, desire, redemption, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. The play encompasses a vast range of human experiences, from love and desire to ambition and remorse, offering profound insights into the complexities of human nature. "Faust" is revered for its poetic language, philosophical depth, and its exploration of existential questions. Goethe himself regarded it as his greatest achievement, underscoring its significance in his literary legacy and its enduring influence on subsequent generations of writers and thinkers.
