Book excerpt: Henry James and the “Aliens” intervenes substantially in current debates in James studies, most notably in the key areas of cultural studies, ethnic studies and queer studies. Focusing throughout on questions of identity, and most prominently on how the latter is given shape in the very form of the late style, the book finds that James’s response to the ethnic other can be grasped neither as an attempt to police, supervise and master the other, nor as a politics of non-identical surrender to that other. Instead, there is a continuum of identity—akin to the “criminal continuity” that James registers throughout the American scene—in which self and other, native and alien, subject and object adopt alternate roles of control and submission. Both are at times in possession of the American scene and possessed by that scene. Jamesian sexual identity, too, proves to be constantly reconstituted in transitive processes of signification that make it impossible to fix the “I” or the “other” within a fixed framework—be that framework a heterosexual or a homosexual one. The eroticism that strikingly informs the late James can therefore only be captured, if at all, under the rubric of the “queer.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martha Banta’s Henry James: An Alien’s “History” of America is the product of a lifetime of thinking about James and his odd, but oddly productive, relation to the land of his birth. A “biography” of an “autobiography,” it serves as a peripatetic history of the central cross-currents and intersections between Europe and America, memory and history, romance and realism. These diverse elements structure James’s channeling of his own experience as a displaced or “alienated” American into a variety of genres: memoirs and travel writing, novels and tales, letters and literary criticism, social and cultural commentary. Together they constitute the “never completed novel” of his ongoing “autobiographical” project. In its masterful weaving together of materials, text, and time-frames, Henry James: An Alien’s “History” of America moves fluidly back and forth over the intricate tapestry of James’s life and texts. It identifies and analyzes key moments, words, and tropes that echo across the years, tracing the instances of repetition, reversal, self-revelation, and re-vision that underwrite this “life-record.” This study represents a major advance over conventional, sometimes oversimplified readings of James’s “international theme.” His attitudes about both Europe and America emerge here in their full complexity and contradictoriness. The breadth and depth of Banta’s knowledge of James and of the historical America from which he emerged and which he never ceased to engage, however ambivalently, will make this a rich reading experience for general readers as well as scholars. Book excerpt: This study begins with the proposition that to read Henry James - particularly the late texts - is to confront the queer potential of style and the traces it leaves on the literary life. In contrast to other recent analyses, this book asserts that James's queerness is to be found neither in the homoerotic thematics of the texts, however startlingly explicit, nor in the suggestions of same-sex desire in the author's biography, however undeniable, but in his style. There are many elements in the style that make James's writing queer. But if there is a thematic marker, the book shows, it is belatedness.

Book excerpt: In New York Revisited, first published in Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1906, Henry James describes turn-of-the-century New York in vivid detail. Although written in 1904-1905, when James returned to the U.S. after living abroad for more than 20 years, the essay is as pertinent today as it was 100 years ago. The text appears as it was originally published and is enhanced with period illustrations and photographs. Beautifully bound and with a spectacular view of the Flatiron building on the cover, this book is a literary treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposing a new approach to Jamesian aesthetics, Daniel Hannah examines the complicated relationship between Henry James's impressionism and his handling of 'the public.' Hannah challenges solely phenomenological or pictorial accounts of literary impressionism, instead foregrounding James's treatment of the word 'impression' as a mediatory unit that both resists and accommodates invasive publicity. Thus even as he envisages a breakdown between public and private at the end of the nineteenth century, James registers that breakdown not only as a threat but also as an opportunity for aesthetic gain. Beginning with a reading of 'The Art of Fiction' as both a public-forming essay and an aesthetic manifesto, Hannah's study examines James's responses to painterly impressionism and to aestheticism, and offers original readings of What Maisie Knew, The Wings of the Dove, and The American Scene that treat James's articulation of impressionism in relation to the child, the future of the novel, and shifts in the American national imaginary. Hannah's study persuasively argues that throughout his career James returns to impressionability not only as a site of immense vulnerability in an age of rapid change but also as a crucible for reshaping, challenging, and adapting to the public sphere’s shifting forms.

It charts James' progress as he gathers the impressions upon which he will base his 'theory of America.' If James arrives as a 'restored absentee' seeking a renewed relationship with his homeland, the press greets his return with reverence for his status combined with disdain for his prose.

It is the most original and psychologically penetrating of his several novels, and the one in which he attains a truly tragic perception of the wounded human heart. André Mariolle is a rich, handsome, gifted young man who cannot settle on what to do with himself. Madame de Burne, a glacially dazzling beauty, wants Mariolle to attend her exclusive salon for artists, composers, writers, and other intellectuals. At first Mariolle keeps his distance, but then he hits on the solution to all his problems: caring for nothing in particular, he will devote himself to being in love; Madame de Burne will be his everything. Soon lover and beloved are equally lost within a hall of mirrors of their common devising. Richard Howard’s new English translation of this complex and brooding novel—the first in more than a hundred years—reveals the final, unexpected flowering of a great French realist’s art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James Today is a collection of seven essays focused on the relevance of Henry James’s work for an understanding of current problems. This volume includes studies of how James and such contemporaries as Mark Twain and the Brazilian novelist Machado de Assis have influenced each other and modernist and postmodernist writers, such as Cynthia Ozick, Jonathan Franzen, and Philip Roth. These traditional studies of literary influence are complemented by essays on Henry James and visual media (collage, painting, sculpture, architecture) and new media (digital social media and the digital humanities). Recognizing the significant cultural and technological changes since James lived and wrote, the contributors nonetheless focus on the historical and cultural continuities between James’s era and our own. Other contributors focus on innovative practices in James’s cultural era to understand how the modernist avant-garde anticipated social and aesthetic issues that are today central to our lives. The contributors represent a global spectrum of James Studies, and their diverse essays indicate James’s powerful influence on aesthetic and social issues. Brad Evans (Rutgers University), Ashley Barnes (Williams College), Harilaos Stecopoulos (University of Iowa), Harold Hellwig (Idaho State University), Geraldo Cáffaro (Universidade Federale de Minais Gerais, Brazil), John Carlos Rowe (University of Southern California), and Shawna Ross (Arizona State University) represent an exemplary cross-section of those scholars working on Henry James today.
