Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of personal accounts by highly trained helicopter pilots, including those with distinguished careers in the military and commercial flying, who with divers, ensured that essential staff could operate in North Sea oil exploration and oil supply. They were the vital link in the process and operated in the most challenging circumstances, often in high levels of danger and sometimes with loss of life, for example, the Piper Alpha Disaster which made national news. And the ferrying of essential personnel and supplies could involve rescues as well routine flying missions. The narrative is often technical but written to ensure good understanding for lay readers and it will, of course, appeal to the many with flying experience in the forces, in commercial flying and government service. Above all, it is a series of graphic personal stories as recounted by individuals faced with extremes of climate, weather, technical, engineering and aeronautical problems and often with human life at stake. The people come to life and with domestic and social concerns and interests are 'real' and believable people. It is history of the North Sea oil episode in UK political and economic history and in conjunction with international oil politics is of huge importance to Britain's economy. This is a period of progress to domestic oil independence by about 1984 and so a key period with subsequent importance even to the present. All aspects of the operations are covered within individual stories, and include the broader questions of company policy, regulation, and trade union involvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the leading expert in the history of UK energy, this study provides new, in-depth analysis of the development of UK petroleum policies towards the North Sea oil and gas industry from the early 1960s to the early 1980s. Following on from volume I (The Growing Dominance of the State) to discuss the more recent history of the North Sea oil and gas industry, here Alex Kemp offers new insights into developments in the industry. The controversial decisions to raise gas prices to consumers and to introduce the Gas Levy are discussed, while the thinking behind the gradual reduction in taxation - including the abolition of SPD (Supplementary Petroleum Duty) and the removal of royalties on new developments - is fully explained. The various options considered to reduce the powers of BNOC (British National Oil Corporation), then privatise its upstream assets, and finally to abolish the state company altogether are fully discussed, as is the thinking leading up to the privatisation of the British Gas Corporation in 1986. This volume also sheds light on the development of policies onshore, particularly the role of the OSO (Offshore Supplies Office), and the response of British industry to the North Sea opportunity. Finally, the evolution of policies relating to health, safety, decommissioning, and the environment over the whole period of the study are examined. The Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas will be of interest to students of North Sea oil and gas, energy economics, business history, and British politics, as well as to petroleum professionals and policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You could be forgiven for taking Bristow’s story as the invention of an action thriller writer . . . One of the best flying books you’ll ever read.” —Pilot Magazine Alan Bristow was a truly remarkable man. As a merchant navy officer cadet during the war, he survived two sinkings, played a part in the evacuation of Rangoon and was credited with shooting down two Stukas in North Africa. He joined the Fleet Air Arm and trained as one of the first British helicopter pilots, becoming the first man to land a helicopter on a battleship and Westland’s first helicopter test pilot. He flew in France, Holland, Algeria, Senegal and elsewhere, narrowly escaping many helicopter crashes before winning the Croix de Guerre evacuating wounded French soldiers in Indochina. For four years he flew for Aristotle Onassis’s pirate whaling fleet in Antarctica before joining Douglas Bader and providing support services to oil drillers in the Persian Gulf. Out of that grew Bristow Helicopters Ltd, the largest helicopter company in the world outside America. Bristow’s circle included the great helicopter pioneers such as Igor Sikorsky and Stan Hiller, test pilots like Harold Penrose and Bill Waterton, Sheiks and Shahs and political leaders, business giants like Lord Cayzer and Freddie Laker, and the author James Clavell, a lifelong friend whose book Whirlwind was a fictionalized account of Bristow’s overnight evacuation of his people and helicopters from revolutionary Iran. Bristow and precipitated the Westland Affair when he made a takeover bid which eventually led to the resignation of Michael Heseltine and Leon Brittain, and almost to the downfall of Margaret Thatcher. “Has all the ingredients of a bestselling novel.” —Firetrench

Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the history of a vital stage of UK technical and economic development, perhaps the most important since the Second World War. It shows, from an industrial viewpoint, how the British handled the exploitation of their most significant natural resource gain of the 20th century. Notwithstanding the nearly 30 years of government support through the Offshore Supplies Office, the UK has not reaped the full benefit of the North Sea discoveries; this book attempts to explain why. It will assist governments and industries faced with future instances of unforeseen, specialist and large-scale new demand to manage their reactions more effectively. It also throws light on how governments can pursue strategic industrial objectives while leaving market mechanisms to function with minimal interference, something some administrations – perhaps even the British – may wish to do now or in the future. Covers the entire period from the first well offshore Britain until the dismantling of the specific British industrial policy measures for offshore supplies Based in large measure upon archives not previously accessed and the private testimony/papers of participants 'Drills down' to the level of individual company decisions through case study and other material The only properly researched description of how the world’s first major local content initiative developed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cockpit life flying oil & gas helicopters offshore in atrocious weather is vividly conveyed when Captains discretion explored an environment with winds and waves exceeding 90knots/feet respectively to destinations unsuitable for weathering the storms, when it could be dangerous to make an approach and land on some production platforms or to semi-submersible flotels moored in their lee or to drilling rigs with clad derricks generating extreme turbulence; where anything goes so long as you can account for your actions. Into this environment extracts from accident reports of aircraft ditching, breaking up or simply crashing. Then to the South China Sea with an interpreter on the cockpit jump-seat and a drillship lost with all hands, Heathrow/Gatwick, and Penzance/Scillies Links, operating to the oilfields of the Mumbai High, India, Norway and to Shetland and the last voyage of an oil tanker promising an environmental disaster, offshore as shuttle pilot West of Shetland and the Danish gas fields, finally to the Baltic Sea - Finland and Sweden (Nord Stream 1). All the time, the pilots trying to improve their lot against the odds with industrial actions, looking for lost pensions and savings, being fired twice in one week by Robert Maxwell, or simply being made redundant for being too old and proving otherwise in a tribunal by flying in parts of the world with extreme temperatures where Western tourists don't go: the Kashagan in the Northern Caspian, Kazakhstan and Kish Island, Iran where he flew with 'Angels'. The narrative revolves around companies where the author was employed: Bristows, British Airways Helicopters, British International, CHC, Gulf Helicopters and Bristow International, with some background accounts of these crews. Then a nine-year career writing operations manuals for international Aircraft Operating Certificates (AOCs), culminating with six on the UK Search and Rescue (SAR) Standards Transition Team as sole editor/auditor with the award of their own AOC. And part-time successfully developing stealth coatings for aircraft, including the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter. This is a part historical journal, part travelogue built around the autobiography of a helicopter pilot flying medium and heavy helicopters offshore for 38 years beginning in 1975 when the UK oil boom was just taking off. To be enjoyed by the aviation community, the Oil & Gas industry, and those with a spirit of adventure. How the fortunes of these interdependent organisations developed, particularly on the North Sea, from a censored, unreported world, before immersion suits and the rope around the hull to hang onto after ditching, to the introduction of safety measures, procedures and practices taken for granted today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First envisioned by Leonardo da Vinci and first deployed in World War II, the helicopter is now a universal icon of modern warfare, a key component of combat planning around the world, and one of the military's most versatile and effective tools. Helicopters: An Illustrated History of Their Impact covers the development of helicopters from a concept in Leonardo daVinci's mind to the first successful machines in the early 1900s to the latest tilt-rotor designs. Time and again, in a story of constant innovation, designers answered the concerns of military planners with more maneuverable, more capable rotorcraft. With expert analysis and specific details of every significant model ever used, Helicopters shows how these once denigrated machines became essential to a variety of missions (reconnaissance, transport, attack, support, evacuation, urban combat, quick strikes behind enemy lines, and more). In addition, the book looks at the impact of rotorcraft beyond the military, including their ever-widening role in emergency medical care, police work, traffic control, agriculture, news reporting, and more.
