Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope MacKenzie likes a plan and hates the unpredictable. While it wasn't in her plan to fall in love her junior year at Chapel Hill, Heath Beckett made sense. They were both in the school of business with similar goals. She thought it was cute that he traveled to Asheville to take stained glass classes. Maybe he would use his hobby to make a window for their house one day. But when Heath told her shortly before graduation that he was quitting school to become a stained glass artist, it unnerved her so badly that she broke up with him. By the time she recovered from her shock and went looking for him three months later, he was married! She never recovered. Heath Beckett never expected Hope to understand his passion for creating stained glass. He just expected her to love him as he loved her, with her entire being and forever. He didn't expect her to understand when he had to leave school to accept the commission of a lifetime but he didn't expect her to snatch her love away either. When his mentor's sweet daughter, who had always had a crush on him, was diagnosed with leukemia, a devastated Heath gave her what was left of his broken heart and did his best to make her happy for the few months she had left. Seven years have passed and Heath has a thriving business in the artisan boutique town of Beauford, Tennessee, which happens to be Hope's hometown-and she's back. Can they fit the shards of their past together to make something beautiful or will their hearts end up like shattered glass again?

Book excerpt: 'In Clive, we have an ever-fascinating guide to Britain's heathery districts, not only marvelling at the wildlife of such wild places, but also celebrating their diverse origins, uses and cultural resonances' - ANDREW BYFIELD Heathlands are so much more than simply purple carpets of heather. They are ancient landscapes found throughout Britain that support a complex of inter-related species and an immense diversity of habitats. They also possess a unique human history defined by the struggle between pastoralism and the competing demands of those who seek exclusive use of the land. In this latest addition to the British Wildlife Collection, Clive Chatters introduces us to Britain's heathlands and their anatomy. He then takes the reader on a geographical heathland tour – from the maritime sub-arctic of the Shetlands to the mild wetness of the Atlantic coast – with an in memoriam nod to those heaths that have been erased from common memory and understanding. He concludes with a review of how people have perceived and used heathland wildlife over the ages, and sets out a future vision for this iconic landscape, its unique habitats and the species that live there. Most of our heaths are pale shadows of their former selves. However, Chatters argues, it is not inevitable that the catastrophic losses of the recent past are the destiny of our remaining heaths. Should we wish, their place in the countryside as an integral part of British culture can be secured.

Book Synopsis On the Doorstep of Europe by : Heath Cabot
Download or read book On the Doorstep of Europe written by Heath Cabot and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the global financial crisis of 2008, Greece has shouldered a heavy burden struggling with internal political and financial insecurity as well as hosting enormous numbers of migrants and asylum seekers who arrive by land and sea. In On the Doorstep of Europe, Heath Cabot presents an ethnographic study of the asylum system in Greece, tracing the ways asylum seekers, bureaucrats, and service providers attempt to navigate the dilemmas of governance, ethics, knowledge, and social relations that emerge through this legal process. Centering on the work of an asylum advocacy NGO in Athens, Cabot explores how workers and clients grapple with predicaments endemic to Europeanization and rights-based protection. Drawing inspiration from classical Greek tragedy to highlight both the transformative potential and violence of law, Cabot charts the structural violence effected through European governance, rights frameworks, and humanitarian intervention while also exploring how Greek society is being remade from the inside out. She shows how, in contemporary Greece, relationships between insiders and outsiders are radically reconfigured through legal, political, and economic crises. Now updated with a preface reflecting on the critical stakes of the book's exploration of refuge in light of events that have transpired in and beyond Europe since its initial publication, On the Doorstep of Europe highlights how border crossers and residents in countries of arrival navigate legal and political violence. Cabot's on-the-ground account of asylum and immigration in Europe's borderlands, based on fieldwork conducted between 2004 and 2011, shows how the difficulties encountered by asylum seekers in an earlier time remain relevant and revealing in the face of ongoing crises and challenges today.
