Book excerpt: This is both a first and a second level course in Pascal. It starts at an elementary level and works up to a point where problems of realistic complexity can be tackled. It is aimed at two audiences: on the one hand the computer professional who has a good knowledge of Cobol or Fortran but needs convincing that Pascal is worth learning, and on the other hand the amateur computer enthusiast who may have a smattering of Basic or may be an absolute beginner. Its approach is based on two principles that are not always widely recognized. The first is that computing is no longer a specialist subject. In the early days of computing a priesthood arose whose function was to minister to those awesome, and awesomely expensive, machines. Just as in the ancient world, when illiteracy was rife, the scribes formed a priestly caste with special status, so the programmers of yesteryear were regarded with reverence. But times are changing: mass computer literacy is on its way. We find already that when a computer enters a classroom it is not long before the pupils are explaining the finer points of its use to their teacher - for children seem to have greater programming aptitude than adults. This book, it is hoped, is part of that process of education by which the computer is brought down to earth; and therefore it attempts to divest computing of the mystique (and deliberate mystification) that still tends to surround the subject.

Book excerpt: "In transcribing the speech of the characters in this book, I have made no effort to provide phonetic representation. Words are presented in an approximation to standard orthography, with as much "eye-dialect" as seems necessary to indicate the varieties of English used, primarily African American English Vernacular and Piedmont Carolina dialect. The children of the two communities grew up learning local dialect forms. Trackton children who did not leave the community until they were in their adolescence retained more features of African American English Vernacular than those who left before they entered school"--

Book excerpt: Vygotsky at Work and Play relates the discoveries and insights of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky to ordinary people and their communities. The author—working with her intellectual partner Fred Newman—has advanced a unique performance-based methodology of development and learning that draws upon a fresh and in some ways unconventional reading of Vygotsky. In this book, Holzman shows this methodology at work in key learning environments: psychotherapy, classrooms, out-of-school youth programs, and the workplace. The book vividly describes Vygotskian-inspired programs involving thousands of people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ages and occupations. Interwoven in each chapter are discussions of Vygotsky’s understandings of play, speaking, thinking, the zone of proximal development, the individual and the group. Holzman brings practice and theory together to provide a way forward for those who wish to liberate human development and learning from the confines of the social scientific paradigm, the institutional location of educational and psychological research, and the practices that derive from them. Vygotsky at Work and Play presents a challenge to the underlying distinctions and boundaries of psychology, most significantly to the presumption of a cognitive-emotive divide, the notion of fixed identity, the privileging of the individual over the group, and the instrumental nature of play and performance. The book is essential reading for researchers and professionals in educational and developmental psychology, psychotherapy, cultural historical activity, social science, performance studies and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can find your balance and the keys to success and enlightenment by implementing a plan of mind, body and spirit. Through the mastery of virtues we are ultimately able to master ourselves. This book provides a powerful framework that will liberate you to all the possibilities and magic in the world. Dead Presidents, is ghetto-parlance for money. Benjamin Franklin is the only non-president to grace American paper currency. His face, on the highly prized $100, spawned the phrase, All about the Benjamins. As one of the first millionaires in American history, he felt establishing a virtuous life was the key to great success. He also knew that money was a tool; a sharp one. This is a guide to take hold of those virtues and shape the course of your life. Franklin, in his great genius, focused on 13 virtues. He would work each of those virtues for seven days. He would go through the cycle four times a year, starting anew every 13 weeks. The coded-cycles help make our dreams come true. Benjamin Franklins contributions continue to have a huge impact on our world. It is time to return back to wholeness, prosperity and goodness. It is our duty. When we start to focus on living more virtuous lifestyles, the hope for our lives and humanity grows greatly. When we chart our course, we move with power and love. Capt. Brad Borden, USA (Ret.)
