Book excerpt: This breakthrough book challenges traditional views about business, leadership, and performance by linking the benefits of nutrition and exercise with the power of neuroscience to optimize executive performance. In today’s dynamic business climate, despite technological advances, executives spend more time at work than ever before. Faster-moving markets, shorter deadlines, constant change, and tighter budgets all mean greater pressure and increased energy demands. Headstrong Performance explores the research behind the deterioration of executive performance as a result of stress mismanagement and reveals the neuroscience behind stress and poor health behaviors commonly witnessed in the workplace. These misguided coping strategies ultimately result in employee disengagement, decreased business performance, and subsequently, a suffering bottom line. Armed with the latest science, this book provides numerous highly effective health strategies that will enable today’s professionals to work toward improved, sustainable business performance—and remain at the top of their game for years to come. Colin Sampson, senior vice president of SAP, says: “Headstrong Performance is a life-changing message about healthy work-life balance, good nutrition, rest, and regular exercise, all leading to an improvement in performance, individually and as a team. A great way to bring about real, positive, and productive change.”

Book excerpt: "Since the publication of the first edition of Head Strong: How Psychology is Revolutionizing War in 2014, developments in military psychology have been rapid and important. So much so, that this revised edition is necessary to accurately capture the vital role that psychology continues to play in 21st century military success. The ideas contained in the first edition influenced emerging doctrine in the Army's Human Dimension, and informed military leaders around the globe of ways that psychological science and practice may be leveraged to improve combat effectiveness. Many of the predictions made in the first edition have come true, and new and exciting products of military psychology now offer novel ways of impacting military outcomes. This revised edition of Head Strong updates the 13 chapters included in the first edition with breaking news in military psychology, and adds new material to augment those chapters. Two entirely new chapters are included in this edition. The first is on character and discusses how to measure it, how to develop it, and how character plays a vital role in the performance of individual soldiers and their units. The second new chapter is based on a year-long special assignment the author spent working as a Fellow for the Army Chief of Staff's Strategic Studies Group, and captures the rapid developments in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and other disciplines that may help the military optimize soldier and unit performance. Like the other topics in Head Strong, these two new chapters have significant applicability to non-military organizations including schools, corporations, and sports teams. Taken together, the updates and new chapters make Head Strong, Revised Edition essential reading for anyone interested in how the military, and by extension other organizations, may leverage psychology to improve performance."--

Book excerpt: From the creator of Bulletproof Coffee and author of the bestselling The Bulletproof Diet comes a revolutionary plan to upgrade your brainpower—in two weeks or less. For the last decade, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Dave Asprey has worked with world-renowned doctors and scientists to uncover the latest, most innovative methods for making humans perform better—a process known as "biohacking." In his first book, The Bulletproof Diet, he shared his biohacking tips for taking control of your own biology. Now, in Head Strong, Asprey shows readers how to biohack their way to a sharper, smarter, faster, more resilient brain. Imagine feeling like your mind is operating at its clearest and sharpest, and being able—possibly for the first time in your life—to do more in less time? What it suddenly became easier to do the very hardest things you do? Or if you could feel 100% confident about your intellect, and never again fear being the person in the room who just isn’t smart enough, or can’t remember something important? How would you treat people if the mood swings, short temper, and food cravings that disrupt your day could simply disappear? In Head Strong, Asprey shows us that all of this is possible—and more. Using his simple lifestyle modifications (or "hacks") to take advantage of how the structure of your brain works, readers will learn how to take their mental performance to the next level. Combining the latest findings in neuroscience and neurobiology with a hacker-inspired "get it done now" perspective, Asprey offers a program structured around key areas of brain performance that will help you: Power the brain with exactly what it needs to perform at its best all day long Eliminate the sources of "kryptonite," both nutritional and environmental, that make the brain slower. Supercharge the cellular powerhouses of our brains, the mitochondria, to eliminate cravings and turn up mental focus. Reverse inflammation to perform better right now, then stay sharp and energized well into your golden years. Promote neuron growth to enhance processing speed and reinforce new learning—hotwiring your brain for success. Asprey’s easy to follow, two-week program offers a detailed plan to supercharge brain performance, including: which foods to eat and which ones to avoid, how to incorporate the right kinds of physical activity into your day, a detox protocol for your home and body; meditation and breathing for performance, recommended brain-boosting supplements; and how to adjust the lighting in your home and work space to give your brain the quality light it thrives on. A better brain—and a happier, easier, more productive life—is within reach. You just need to get Head Strong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a sport that's so often won by a two-point spread, the mental game of volleyball is the difference between winning and losing. Your mindset is the difference maker. The Dream - operating in a state of relaxed concentration and confidence in your ability to execute with a precognitive notion of where the ball will land next. The Reality - fumbling between positions a step behind on each play, distracted by sideline pressure and self-doubt. I've interviewed dozens of players and coaches at the highest level of volleyball to create the ultimate guide for players and coaches on mental training for volleyball. I've packed it full of practical confidence building strategies and tips to help players maintain their concentration on the court. This book will show you how to: Create and implement focusing rituals on the court. Approach competition with clear tactical plans. Let go of mistakes immediately. Harness the power of visualization. Avoid 5 mistakes that most coaches make. Plus a bonus section on "How to create a culture of teamwork (5 Uncommon Tips)". Let's put an end to mental errors on the volleyball court and take your game to the next level. EDITORIAL REVIEWS What Coaches are Saying About the Book: AL SCATES, Coached the UCLA mens volleyball team to 19 NCAA titles- "Both the experienced and the novice will improve their performance by reading Brooke Rundle's guide to concentration and confidence building. All those who have been closely associated with the sport of volleyball will recognize that her techniques will help you improve on the court and in life." BROOK COULTER, Associate Head Coach Colorado State University 2012-2015 and professional playing experience 2002-2007 (Slovenia, Austria, Spain, Germany, Holland) - "Rundle gave a presentation on the Headstrong principles and strategies at CSU's team camp in 2015. Our coaches found the Headstrong techniques to declutter the mind, build confidence and prioritize improvement over accomplishment extremely helpful and practical for players and coaches alike. Every coach can benefit from reviewing the section on the 5 mistakes coaches make. The guide offers actionable tips for practice and a game plan to help volleyball players improve their mental game. I highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book and booking her for a speaking engagement at your camp or club." RACHELLE SHERDEN, Head Women's Volleyball Coach Gustavus Adolphus College and 2015 AVCA Central Region Coach of the Year. - "Brooke hits the nail on the head with Headstrong- a concise, relatable, and powerful how-to guide about mental training that is entirely specific to volleyball. I can't wait to share Headstrong with my players and incorporate the principles and strategies from the book into our team's mental training regime. When I think back to my first years coaching volleyball I think about how much I could have benefited from reading and applying the ideologies defined in Chapter 5 about common coaching mistakes. Thanks to Chapter 5, I have a new post-season reflection and evaluation tool to add to my coaching toolbox." JEFF MEEKER, Head Women's Volleyball Coach Cornell College and 6x Conference Coach of the Year.- "This book is not just another tool for coaches, rather is it an entire tool box to inspire growth in our athletes, provide a more positive experience and become better coaches. Brooke's unique and diverse experiences provide keen insight into how we can help our athletes become mentally strong in volleyball and beyond."

Book excerpt: A terrorist bomb destroys a corporate jet, and a reluctant Conor Gifford, the Chief of the Office of Special Investigations, is thrust into an investigation that takes him to picturesque but bloody Kashmir where he is greeted with disdain and encouraged to withdraw. With a solitary Indian Special Branch shadow as his only companion, Gif stubbornly ignores the advice and warnings of competing Indian and American investigators and eventually follows a trail that takes him to Karachi, Islamabad and Reston, Virginia. Gif uncovers two vital clues which he turns over to the FBI investigative team. A distracted Gifford eagerly withdraws from the hunt for the bomber and hurries back to Richmond only to have the governor dispatch him to Virginia Beach to join a hunt for a serial killer. Before Gif is able to fully engage with the search for the serial killer, an eccentric billionaire contrives Gif's return to the quest for the bomber. Forced to balance the pressures of two distracting investigations, Gif commutes between Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Virginia Beach until assistance from two unlikely sources lead him two very dissimilar antagonists. Both investigations culminate in one tumultuous weekend.

Moreover, this book was developed in response to a pressing need, first directed by the Chief of Staff of the Army, to examine current and future developments in behavioral, cognitive, and social neuroscience that may allow organizations to enhance individual worker and team performance. This volume captures a wide range of approaches, both with an eye to describing state of the art knowledge, and projecting what may become applicable in the near future. The variety of social, technological, and scientific issues make this book indispensable in our time. Organizations of all sorts, but especially those who operate in "in extremis" or high-stakes settings, are seeking to improve the performance of their workers. The chapters' breadth and accessibility will allow strategic leaders of organizations to evaluate breaking news in HPO, and will also serve as an up-to-date review of the field for scientists involved in human performance research.

Book excerpt: If a child can watch Barney, can’t that same child also enjoy watching Charlie Chaplin or the Marx Brothers? And as they get older, wouldn’t they grow to like screwball comedies (His Girl Friday), women’s weepies (Imitation of Life), and westerns (The Searchers)? The answer is that they’ll follow because they’ll have learned that “old” does not necessarily mean “next channel, please.”Here is an impassioned and eminently readable guide that introduces the delights of the golden age of movies. Ty Burr has come up with a winning prescription for children brought up on Hollywood junk food. FOR THE LITTLE ONES (Ages 3—6): Fast-paced movies that are simple without being unsophisticated, plainspoken without being dumbed down. Singin’ in the Rain and Bringing Up Baby are perfect.FOR THE ONES IN BETWEEN (Ages 7—12): “Killer stories,” placing easily grasped characters in situations that start simply and then throw curveballs. The African Queen and Some Like It Hot do the job well.FOR THE OLDER ONES (Ages 13+): Burr recommends relating old movies to teens’ contemporary favorites: without Hitchcock, there could be no The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, without Brando, no Johnny Depp.

Book excerpt: Tim Cleverley inherits a failing pub in Wales, which he plans to rescue by enlisting an American pulp novelist to concoct an entirely fabricated "mystery" about Gerald Manley Hopkins, who composed "The Wreck of the Deutschland" nearby. Blending the real stories of Hopkins and the shipwrecked nuns he wrote about with a contemporary love story, while casting a wry eye on the Dan Brown industry, The Hopkins Conundrum is a highly original mix of commercial fiction, literary biography, and satirical commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death in the Congo is a gripping account of a murder that became one of the defining events in postcolonial African history. It is no less the story of the untimely death of a national dream, a hope-filled vision very different from what the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of the Congo became in the second half of the twentieth century. When Belgium relinquished colonial control in June 1960, a charismatic thirty-five-year-old African nationalist, Patrice Lumumba, became prime minister of the new republic. Yet stability immediately broke down. A mutinous Congolese Army spread havoc, while Katanga Province in southeast Congo seceded altogether. Belgium dispatched its military to protect its citizens, and the United Nations soon intervened with its own peacekeeping troops. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, both the Soviet Union and the United States maneuvered to turn the crisis to their Cold War advantage. A coup in September, secretly aided by the UN, toppled Lumumba’s government. In January 1961, armed men drove Lumumba to a secluded corner of the Katanga bush, stood him up beside a hastily dug grave, and shot him. His rule as Africa’s first democratically elected leader had lasted ten weeks. More than fifty years later, the murky circumstances and tragic symbolism of Lumumba’s assassination still trouble many people around the world. Emmanuel Gerard and Bruce Kuklick pursue events through a web of international politics, revealing a tangled history in which many people—black and white, well-meaning and ruthless, African, European, and American—bear responsibility for this crime.
