Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry the Rally Car is a car that talks and controls all of his own functions. Now a rental car, Harry hasn't been rented out yet, because he has a lot of broken parts and is dirty. Harry gets called to the garage by Daniel the Mechanic. In his haste, Harry doesn't see a large puddle and soaks Daniel and the other cars, which have already been cleaned. Then it's Harry's turn to go into the car wash, which is something he's never experienced before. All his worries dissolve as he finds enjoyment under the tickling brushes. But when he sneezes, Daniel gets another soaking. One day, Harry sees Daniel talking to Terry the Sales Manager. Worried, Harry decides to hide. He drives off and goes a bit too fast down a large hill. When his brakes won't work, he sees a sign warning, Danger: Flood Water. After Harry can't stop, Daniel turns up with a tow truck to take Harry to the garage and, once again, Daniel gets soaked due to Harry. When some rally drivers show up at the rental agency looking for a rally car, Harry is given a new spoiler, lots of headlamps and turned into the rally car he was always meant to be. Author R W Neale plans on several sequels to Harry the Rally Car, because for Harry, this is just The Beginning. Neale works in the automobile industry and lives with his family near Oxford, England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry A. Miller designed racing cars that were among the finest of the golden age of American auto racing for nearly two decades. What are less well known are Miller's passenger cars, and boat and aircraft engine designs, some of them extremely successful, some of them bizarre. This book portrays Miller's racing cars of the glorious roaring twenties along with his speedboat and aircraft engines - even his design for a high-speed combat vehicle engine. Seen are his advanced Miller-Fords of 1935 and the radical Gulf-Miller cars of 1938-1941. An exciting collection of photos of the work of one of America's mechanical geniuses, along with commentary on Miller's work by highly regarded auto racing historian Gordon Eliot White.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed illustrated history describes the emergence in North America of the 500cc displacement road racing cars known as FIIIs. It ranges from the start in 1950 right up to current Vintage racing, with descriptions of the cars, courses, organizations holding race events and the people involved, outlining the vast differences from the east coast vs. the west coast. Period photographs and other graphics are reproduced, many for the first time in print. The transition to FIV cars is discussed. By 1964, the initial movement was over and cars were idled, but within a few years, interest in Vintage road racing began, and gradually, many of the existing cars were reactivated. Both east and west coast Vintage events are covered, again with photographs and other images. This book also contains much road racing history (1950-1964), apart from that of the FIII class. Appendices cover surviving cars (both Coopers and other marques) with recent photographs of most. Other appendices cover racing organizations and a variety of technical topics related to racing the cars. No similar book on this subject exists until now.

Book excerpt: Race and civil rights in 1963 Los Angeles provide a powerful backdrop in Gary Phillips’s riveting mystery about an African American crime scene photographer seeking justice for a friend—perfect for fans of Walter Mosley, James Ellroy, and George Pelecanos. LOS ANGELES, 1963: Korean War veteran Harry Ingram earns a living as a news photographer and occasional process server: chasing police radio calls and dodging baseball bats. With racial tensions running high on the eve of Martin Luther King’s Freedom Rally, Ingram risks becoming a victim at every crime scene he photographs. When Ingram hears about a deadly automobile accident on his police scanner, he recognizes the vehicle described as belonging to his good friend and old army buddy, a white jazz trumpeter. The LAPD declares the car crash an accident, but when Ingram develops his photos, he sees signs of foul play. Ingram feels compelled to play detective, even if it means putting his own life on the line. Armed with his wits, his camera, and occasionally his Colt .45, “One-Shot” Harry plunges headfirst into the seamy underbelly of LA society, tangling with racists, leftists, gangsters, zealots, and lovers as he attempts to solve the mystery. Master storyteller and crime fiction legend Gary Phillips has filled the pages of One-Shot Harry with fascinating historical cameos, wise-cracks, tenderness, and an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride of a plot with consequences far beyond one dead body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 24, 1968, more than 250 people from 19 nations set off on a 10,000–mile endurance rally from London to Sydney. Crossing 10 countries, competitors encountered officious border guards, gangs of rock-throwing children, treacherous driving conditions, collisions, breakdowns, injuries, wayward dogs, livestock, camels and kangaroos, millions of spectators crowding the roads and even bandits. Among the professional drivers were a large number of enthusiastic amateurs, many of whom had never raced in their lives. Drawing from personal recollections of more than 60 participants—many who made it to Sydney and many more who didn’t—and contemporary newspaper and magazine articles, this book tells the full story of what was called the “Marathon,” from an idea dreamed up over an alcohol-fueled lunch to the last car over the finish line.

Competition by European vehicles forced American car manufacturers to incorporate new features, resulting in legendary engineering triumphs (and, essentially, works of art). Some of the greatest drivers in racing history were active during this time--Ralph DePalma, Dario Resta, Eddie Rickenbacker, the Chevrolet brothers, Jimmy Murphy. Presenting dozens of races in detail and a wealth of engineering specs, this history recalls the era's cigar-shaped speedway specials and monumental board tracks, the heavy-footed drivers, fearless mechanics, gifted engineers and enthusiastic backers.
